    as a former boatbuilder, I have a tip for nailing your curvature-to-template (4:37) with a good deal less trial-&-error. We always used a common pencil compass or a scratch-divider. The original rough-cut is accomplished in the same way as you're doing here, but then, once you're within an inch or two, you set your compass wide enough to exceed your widest gap, hold your compass perpendicular to the template with pencil-to-template and compass-centre dragging gently along the curvature you wish to copy precisely, then simply score (or pencil) along the entire length of the curvature. Cheers.

    If you weld or attach a flat square such as a piece of steel to the bottom of the combination square you can just make a single line without having to worry about stopping to make another dot, and you won't have to worry about the combination square tipping out of place with its new base

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  5 років тому +1

      Hey - that's a GREAT idea! Thanks for sharing it with me. Jody, at 'Welding tips & Tricks' showed a 'store-bought' combination square with an extra-thick base on one his episodes that I've thought about purchasing. It never dawned on me that I could make something similar myself.

    Another way to mimic the curvature at 4:37 would be to squeeze cast in bondo ( polyester filler) onto the plywood. Alternatively you can backfill in Chavant modelling clay. Either way you get a fast and perfect reproduction. Excellent concise video.

    • @RonCovell

      This buck is made from MDF, so I would expect it to last for several fenders. Many people use plywood, which is more durable, and could hold up for making dozens of fenders. Some people have their bucks laser of water jet cut from steel!

      Brian Bry Brian, there are dozens of very good DVDs, and a few that are not so good. I don't want to bad-mouth anybody's DVDs in a public forum, but if you contact me via email with a listing of the DVDs you are interested in, I will give you my opinion about which are the best. You can get my email address on my website, www.covell.biz

    by measuring this way are you not getting the measurement for the outside rather than the inside of the fender would you not end up with an over size? very clever though

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  8 років тому +2

      +terry4144 You are correct - the buck would have to be downsized one material thickness (.040") to be truly accurate. Nevertheless, if I'm making something 4 feet long, and I get it within .040", I feel like I've done a pretty good job.

      Good-quality reproduction steel rear fenders are now available from BobDrake.com Reproduction steel front fenders are not available (yet) but there are some fiberglass reproductions available. It's getting harder and harder to find good original front fenders, but they do show up at swap meets occasionally, and on eBay.

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  3 роки тому +2

      I took patterns from a fender, then reversed them, and re-assembled them 'backwards'.

    • @Akya2120
      @Akya2120 Рік тому

      @@RonCovell I initially had the same question but when you built the buck, you just lined your curvature stations up on the other side to cut it. You make this stuff look so easy 😅. I know it's harder than it looks, but easier than I think it is. My generation is more used to using computers than being a computer.
      This is what I was looking for, but for making a fiberglass part I'll probably have to make many more stations, or get good at metal working... 😅
      Thank you for this Ron. I wish I could afford to just pay you to do it 😉. I'll definitely weigh this against what I had already considered doing.

    Ron, I don't plan on making metal flares but I see how this is useful. I plan on making fiberglass fender flares to widen the stance of my firebird which also means i'm not working off a previous fender but coming up with my own shape. would you suggest this method to start? or would you think it could work for what i'm doing? I don't want to get halfway in and say "o shit, this won't work for this".

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  7 років тому

      Well, fiberglass is not my area of expertise, but I know a little about it. One good way to make your flares is to model them in place on the car with oil-based clay, take a fiberglass mold from the clay, and lay up a fiberglass flare in the mold.

    I am looking to do new running board aprons on my 34 Dodge best to build a jig? Also they have a complex end, if you have ever seen one, if you have any videos showing these type aprons , where can I watch them, Thanks

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  7 років тому

      You wouldn't necessarily need to build a jig to make the running board aprons. You could use the inner edge of the running board, and the bottom of the sill plate as another reference, and shape a piece of metal to fit between them. Some of the detail work could probably be done with a beading machine, and I presume there are flanges on both the top and bottom surfaces, which could also be done with 'tipping' dies on a beading machine.

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  2 роки тому +1

      Chip board is the material I often use for patterns. If you live in an area with 'Big Box' stores (like Costco or Sam's Club) you can get it free - they use it to separate layers on pallets of toilet paper. Art stores also sell 'poster board', which is thicker and stiffer.

      +Ron Covell Oh yes, but how many times are you going to use them? There's a spectrum of materials from cardboard or foamboard through particle board, plywood to metal that you might choose. Easy to cut and cheap might be better for a one-off, while expensive but durable might be justified for volume production.
      For a total klutz like me, watching your work is like watching an artistic performance.

      avro549B You are correct - the harder-to-cut materials should be used when durability is needed. I've used plastic auto-body filler (Bondo) for some forms, with good results!
