I think firing position made some difference against Legionary Cohort? Against Triarii, Princepes, Hastati, and Early Legionary Cohort the javelins hit from the right side. The sword arm side. For the Auxilia and Legionary Cohort the javelins hit the left side, the shield arm side. Against Auxilia it didn't matter as much because they're not high quality infantry but for something as nice as Legionary Cohort, some extra casualties could have helped. They were taken down to Wavering in the last javelin throw the Peltasts had. Even Urban Cohort who were hit from the sword arm side was taken to Shaken status during the last parts of the Peltast javelin throws.
I think it also hurt that the javelins started throwing when the romans started throwing their pilla. So instead of javelins going directly at their back, its only hitting their side or even their shieldside.
Thanks for the comment. I realized the same when we made the video. Then again, we have tested (with archers) if the side affects. Based on that test, it did not. Furthermore, imo the Legionary First Cohort did not take that much more damage in the battle. But yea, there is still a lingering doubt :)
@@kingster14444 A good point. But would the Militia Hoplites have held for extra 15+ sec without support? That was the reasoning behind the decision here :) Thanks for the comment.
@@qualityoldgames7721 Could be worth a rematch, although I was surprised at how little damage the javelins did to the legionary first cohort as well on rewatch.
@@qualityoldgames7721 Great video either way though, glad to know I'm not the only one that was curious to test units in custom battle, much easier having two users instead of having to work around AI though lol
Why did you shoot the Auxilia and legionnairies from the shielded side but the rest from the non-shielded side? I think they could've had a chance from the other side...
Based on some tests (some time ago) it should not make a significant difference: ua-cam.com/video/lj_iOE5ImmQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/XEXEHE15VIg/v-deo.html Furthermore, imo the Legionary First did not take that much casualties either. And we compare Auxilia and Triarii, was it because of misses or because of the shield? Then again, I admit feeling a bit uneasy about that decision :) Thanks for the comment.
This does seem to show that it's worth bringing a couple of javelin chuckers along in small battles where getting around the flanks is possible. Although, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just bring some archers instead. This combo seems more effective than, say, two units of militia hoplites coordinating. *Sigh...* you know what this means, don't you? Now you're going to have to test to see if two units of militia hoplites can beat x, aren't you? Admittedly, a phalanx to the back does seem pretty deadly, even if it's a militia phalanx. Although what we really want to see is just what's more effective; javelins into the back, or just using another melee unit to hit them in the back.

Same test, but with hoplites and heavy peltasts
Thanks for the comment. I will add that to To-Do list :)
Would like to see the legionary cohort try that in a city… you thinking what I’m thinking qualityoldgames?
The unit control in cities is a nightmare, so probably I am fearing what you are thinking ;D Thanks for the comment.
Legionary Cohort -1000:)
Indeed :) Thanks for the comment.

Agreed on the archers. I will add that to To-Do list :) Thanks for the comment.
The answer: easily if you can click a mouse.
Let's see :) Thanks for the comment.
