Here's what I would do to improve each narrow gauge engine. Skarloey: Give him the Oliver side rod treatement and a better face. Rheneas: Actual side rods, shorter body and a better face. Sir handel: Black wheels (Tomy & Hit versions). Peter Sam: Actual side rods. Rusty: Smaller face. Duncan: Same motor build as the other narrow gauge engines and shorten him a bit. Duke & Bertram: Actual side rods. Proteous: No Changes, it's perfect. Freddie: Actual side rods. Victor: No changes it's fine. Mighty Mac: No changes. Luke: Black wheels (Plarail only). I also wish Mattel or Hit Toys made Smudger since they had Rheneas, but it's way to late for that now.
They should've made narrow gauge track for them and the engines are powered by AAA batteries instead of AA, so they could be smaller and accurate! Or just always powered by rolling stock like Mighty Mac
I've always said, Tomy / Trackmaster for standard gauge. Take Along / Take n Play for narrow gauge...problem solved. I was spelling that out over 10 years ago, dare not go there now with UA-cam KIDS destroying channels one by one.
I’ve always loved Sir Handel’s white wheels when I was little lol. That’s the whole reason why I wanted him when I was little Still have that Sir Handel to this day..
I think I had New Friends Rheneas as a kid, but I remember a BROWN brake van instead. Along with him was a Buzz Buzz James that I broke, (I tore the wires between the engine and tender), with an actual red brake van, a Thomas from a station set (I think it was Maithwate), and a Salty with aquarium cars, one of which had a clear tanker with "glow-in-dark" eels, but I think they started screwing the chassis to the body shell, so I never put batteries in him. Eventually all four disappeared after few years, I eventually found a giant lot of blue Tomy track, four pieces of the raised brown track I grew up with, and a 2009 Percy.
I have a TOMY Rusty and Skarloey, as well as a HIT era Sir Handel and Duke. Rusty and Skarloey came with some amount of track, I remember, the Sir Handel was the pack inspired by the episode "Sir Handel in Charge", and I believe Duke simply came with two pieces of track. I think Duke is the best looking of my lot in the motorized field, with Sir Handel coming in at a close second. I personally have come to appreciate Take-Along/N Play NG far more than TOMY/TrackMaster NG, that's for sure. More accurate in terms of small details (honestly, my only exception in that regard is my two models of Skarloey and Duncan wheel-wise). What does everyone else think?
I'd say Victor is the best looking Trackmaster narrow gauge engine. Hell, I'd even go as far to say he's the best looking character in the entire Plarail/Trackmaster lineup. The elongated proportions of Plarail/Trackmaster work pretty well in Victor's favor because he himself is already an engine that is rather long and flat just like Trackmaster models.
Maybe they could have used the Plarail Luke type drive unit for Rheneas, Rusty and Duncan with the motor in the wheels to get the right shape. Skarloey, Peter Sam and Freddie are fine but need moving side rods along with Rheneas. Sir Handel needs black wheels and gold valve gear on his pre-2011 release but otherwise his design his fine. Mighty Mac, Duke and Bertram can remain the same. Victor and Luke should have used their Plarail designs outside of Asia.
This is a good video and all but I still think that the ng engine don’t deserve so much hate of course the faces aren’t gonna be perfect and they obviously can just shrink them they have to take their a AA or C battery and need space for them
I had a few Trackmasters from I think the 2000s and early 2010s. The only Narrow Guage engine I remember having was Sir Handle. I still think he was one of if not THE best engine of the Trackmaster narrow gauge engines.
Honestly, Trackmaster should’ve made Mighty-Mac have a motor, But they should’ve made him able to Go Forwards & Backwards (Three way switch), then put rear couplings on both sides of him, & that would’ve worked better than what was actually done for him.
Reason why Trackmaster Luke is a bit lo hated is bc you gotta fit a Double A battery and that’s what’s gonna affect the size and the shape of these trackmaster trains
Awesome video! I really don't think Dax was the best person to feature in this though 😂 My ratings (out of 10): Skarloey - 7 Rusty - 4 Mighty Mac - 9 Duncan - 6 Freddie - 8 Sir Handel - 6 Rheneas - 4 Proteus - 8 Peter Sam - 6 Bertram - 8 Duke - 8 Victor - 7 Luke - 5
The ones I have: Skarloey and Rusty: Plarail Rheneas, Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Duke, Victor and Luke: Fisher Price Duncan, Freddie, Mighty Mac, Proteus and Bertram: Hit Toys
They seem to always do their best to capture Skarloey in his most embarrassing moments. It’s so sad how the show in the writing treated him from seasons 9 to 12. Also, why didn’t he get anything for BlueMountain? There were so many missed opportunities with marketing there. In reality, they should’ve marketed all of them for BlueMountain. After all, as one UA-camr put it, it was a re-introduction for them into the series.
Best: mighty mac(just a good model) duke/bertram (just like mighty mac. a good model) rheneas (i dont mind his wrong color atleast its similar) Worst: rusty (no words hes face is just ugly and his face is big) sir handel/proteus (because his so thick and have no window) luke (not an accurate shell + hes thick like sir handel)
Alt. History, plarail made the S4 ones in 1998-2000 Rusty releases in december 1998, followed by Skarloey in mafch 1999, and Sir Handel in october that year. In january 2000, Duncan came out, and Peter Sam jn march. In august of 2000, Rheneas was released, and lastly, Duke in november.
This is why, if I plan to do my own Thomas series using Trackmaster models, I will the narrow-gauge engines’ Wooden Railway models. If you ask me, the miniature engines would use their Take 'n' Play models. Despite this, Rheneas will be the only Trackmaster narrow-gauge engine I will buy, so I can turn Rheneas into Sonny.

Make Ivo Hugh as well. We need RWS characters goddammit!
@@c.pariah1142 I never thought about Ivo Hugh. Since Freddie was released in both Tomy/Trackmaster, It wasn't impossible for him to have a model.

Proteus: although being a sir Handel repaint his detailling and face are good not to mention that gold coupling rods are nice a 10/10
Freddie: he’s face detailing looks good though he’s a big boxy but he’s nice an 8/10 while his revolutions version gets an 6.5/10
Victor his face and detailing are good an 8/10 his revolutions one gets a 4/10 and his plarail one gets an 9.5/10
Luke: his face is nice but he’s to squashed and long so a 3.5/10 his remote control one gets an 4/10 and his plarail one gets a 8/10 and yea that’s it for me
