Today's Thought Experiment: We didn't find out what started the Photonic War, but I've got to put something in my report to Starfleet or they'll just assume it was us. As this is one of the few we're not responsible for, I need an explanation. Give me your best. Or worst. Whatever. I don't care. It'll only get filed.
The "workers" in the local version of Quark's holosuite bordello tried to unionize and things went photonic pear-shaped from there. Either that, or it's the influence of that crazy photonic cult leader we're going to meet a few episodes from now, in "Flesh and Blood."
They found out that the photonic servants were making fun of their names behind their back.
After experiencing the world of Captain Proton in "Bride of Chaotica!" The Photonic Life Forms decided to plant themselves in other photonics across our universe to take back control. So, let's blame Paris.
A photonic was told they were "bright for their kind"
It was us, but it wasn't.
____ and the ___________ _________ ________ from “_____ ___ _____“ attacked Jerry Chicka Jibbert Meow's home planet because they employed holograms as laborers.
Jerry Ryan eats the scenery and its amazing. It makes the whole episode for me, totally believable that she is the doctor
Picardo's expression when Seven snapped at the doc for getting...errm, turned on, while in her body is some seriously funny faceacting. Brilliant.
It’s iconic
"Difficult to maintain an erection due to food poisoning." I fell off my chair laughing with that line!!!
episodes like this remind me why buying that Robert Picardo artwork with his signature was worth it
Please do DS9 next. Please.🙏
DS9 or Enterprise, either one and I'll be happy!
It's not as easy to make fun of though.... :) Enterprise would be easier if he wants to take a piss out of episodes. DS9 is a little too good.
The Space Dog Saga is really going places...
Ensign Malcom to the holodeck...better bring two buckets and a wet n dry vac.....
My favourite Body Swap episode has to be Farscape's. As well as immediately printing out nametags to indicate who was driving each body, they also (in true Farscape fashion) take the time to "investigate" their new bodies.
When Chricton/Areyn is discovered. "Oh come on man! They're here. They're right... here.." then the rest of conversation. :D
@@ptonpc Aeryn Sun: "You were in my shoes, I was in your pants..."
Aaahahaha, I'd forgotten about that. You totally would though.
Who wouldve though, all this time ago, that little Space Dog would be going off on his own adventures. They grow up so fast 🥲

Quite possibly the most famous single shot/frame in the whole voyager run
The shot if seven on the view screen here just broke character as her persona could never have shown such facial expression while conversing thus breaking that illusion of her stoicism. Ive seen this shot in promos, reviews, conventions, etc.
The episode had some great scenes but the parts exceeded the whole. Your snark of Tuvoks shagger season cracked me up.
Love your analysis of all episodes which often more entertaining than weak episodes 🖖
The different ways you found to describe Pon Farr were hilarious 😂
I'd swear Red Dwarf did this plot first. Oh 12:15
yay another one of your videos, thank you
May I just say that I love your username?
@@spikeoramathon it's straight to the point isn't it? i appreciate it, thank you!
@@RandomGuyWithAccount it gave me a much-needed chuckle, so, thank YOU.
i have mixed opinions on seven sharing a meal with the doc at the end. while its very magnamus of her to so quickly get over any hurt feelings he coursed by over indulging and lets face using her body in ways as likly her best friend and mentor he should know she would not approve off and out right abusing her generosity. it almost like the show is blaming or rather shaming her for not living to the nine, ha accidental pun.
i think if i were to wright the episode or at least that part, have her say something to the effect "that perhaps I has being overly reluctant to to explore the opptunitys and experiencers I have being given since being freed from the borg and recent events have made me, consider broadening my experiencers. but I shall do so at my own pace, not his or anyone elses and they will need to discuss his actions while in her body.'
perhaps saying "my will and my body were not my own for 18 years, doctor and having them subverted even by you is not an experience i wish it ever repeat"
I thought I saw every episode of voyager, but I don’t remember this one. I’m going to have to go back and watch it now. Hopefully I did miss it and it’ll be a new episode to me.
I knew I couldn't be the only one thinking of Lister and Rimmer during this episode!
I didn't see the dogs joining Section 31, but as the kids say, "That sounds pretty rad, I'll tune in next time it's on."
Travel the galaxy, murdering people. It's a good gig Skull and Space dogs!
A couple of (random not overly coherent) thoughts. The "I have to watch my figure" line could be related to how Seven sees herself. The mental image she has of how she looks, her fitness levels and how she interacts with people, are specific to her, they are important to how defines herself. As a drone, she had no say in anything about her body and mind, now she is on Voyager, to a large extent it is up to her how she wants to look and behave. So being and feeling different to how she pictures herself would be, unpleasant.
That self image would also tie into her uneasiness about her actions with the Doc in the driving seat. He is fascinated by things she either didn't notice or had to come to terms with herself. How *would* your pulse, your breathing, your heart feel when you have lived your life as a cog in a machine. Your personality becomes active and has to deal with all the things you never experienced as a borg. Perfection has been replaced by squishiness, gurgling, pumping noises, soft skin, smells, various biological processes, mortality.
Where once she was in control, now she is a passenger in her mind, again. If you've been borgified, that must be bringing back some PTSD moments.
(A complicated way of justifying what was considered a funny line at the time).
Regards Vulcans, holodecks and smexy time, I can more easily imagine it *not* working. Holograms do not have the psychic shenigans that fleshy vulcans do, so how does a smexed up vulcan convince themself they are borking a fleshy?
Why would you give a gun that you don't know has been set to BBQ to a character who cannot k*ll? It makes sense the Doc was overpowered.
All in all, this was more a case of "Let's see Jeri go nuts and have some fun"
This is very true, I didn't catch this... As soon as they got the holographic emitter back they could just have turned him off and hid him in a body cavity or something. Thing #2: Yeah, the vista is cozy but caves are usually cold and damp, and really rocky. Unless there was a hidden king-sized bed in that cave they be covered in green bruises later.
It's on my top ten. It's a silly trope, but it's a silly trope done well! I love the character of the Doctor (everybody does), and Jeri's performance of him is utterly convincing. I love it. Deffo the best presentation of a body swap ever.
Edit: oh, except for the X-Files one.
The "Meow" comes from "Meow Meow Beenz," something from an episode of "Community."
i love it!
Still loving your reviews. I cant wait to see which Trek you pick nezt 😊
Ha! Did you let Kurtzman write the dog outright? LOL
Janeway was actually quite funny in this episode. If you what her face when Neelix brings the soup. She is making all kinds of faces and actually starts to break characters.
It's so ironic that Seven's real name is Jeri Ryan.
I kept thinking you were talking about her.
Doc in the body of Seven: "Oh wow, cheesecase is delicious. Wait... I wasn't programmed to have taste, so how do I know what delicious even tastes like? I mean, would I say the same thing about a literal pile of feces, or even Neelexe's cooking? "
Like Data when he gets his emotion chip.
"I hate this!"
"Another?"
"Please."
I find it funny how in Star Trek every thing is 1-step authentication. Just need the access codes, and no email or text message code.
They did say in TNG episode where the 21st century people were brought out of stasis that there weren't really passwords on most things as people were expected to respect the rules. You'd think it would take more than 400 years to get to that point, though.
The “watching my figure” line was perfect. The Doctor had no clue as to how to act like a woman just like most men wouldn’t. They would spout lines they heard in books or movies.
I follow the logic, and there's a fair argument to be made that he would have missed the social cues showing this thinking was outdated, but the conclusion relies on him:
A) Only consuming media from before a time when such things were considered backwards.
B) Ignoring all of the research showing that unrealistic body ideals have a negative effect on mental health.
We could possibly argue for A if Paris is his influence (though his love of opera shows he also looks elsewhere), but B would require a hologram with the combined medical knowledge of Starfleet to ignore it for a throwaway line. It's a minor thing, but it fell flat for me and highlighted the difference in how Picard was treated.
Oh Goody! another new video from one of my favorite UA-cam channels! At this rate, I'll never get today's work done...
REVIEW RED DWARF!!!!
Holorific 😁👍
Some of the comments on this were brilliant - thank you! :)
My day has improved
Seven was unhappy 😊
as a straight woman, ms ryans proformance in this was tollerably wachable.
good the dog and the computer have a job opertunity, wonder if section 31 will ever work out the computer is not a dog.
I'm pretty sure they're actually working on the new season of red dwarf
Hold on
7s emotion block thing?!
Why didn't it trigger ..
Well at least The Doc didn't make them see The King Of The Potato People.
People complain that by Season 7 most of the stories revolved around Seven or The Doctor, but I have to say, Jeri Ryan and Robert Picardo just knock it out of the park, so I can't really quarrel. Jeri did a fantastic job here, perfectly channeling Picardo's character. The Flash TV Show did a whole body swapping arc in Season 4 where The Thinker jumps into at least 5 different people's bodies throughout the season, and compared to this, some of the performances were utter trash, like some of the actors didn't even try to channel the original character, but Jeri Ryan made this look easy.
I think my hatred of the damned holographic doctor as a character was second only to my hatred of Neelix.
Lacks woof.
The whole 'photonic'/holograms thing is weird to me. Its AI, in the form of a hologram. It's not like it matters whether the body is holographic or android, its fundamental an issue of organics vs AI. And again, the hologram is merely a shape they adopt, not a fundamental necessity of the AI.
There is a strong implication that the brain-like processing and the hologram are part of the same thing. I don't know why anyone would design a system like that. In early TNG, the holodeck was attributed with the ability to create holographic matter, not just "photons and force fields" as the Doctor once said. Could the nature of the holomatter mimic neurological processing? I dunno, it makes no sense. It makes no sense that the Doctor can't be backed up (except for the one time this program can be), or why there can't be multiple of him running, one on the ship and one on the mobile emitter.
It's quite difficult to come up with a plausible explanation for this. Maybe it's the same explanation that allowed the silver blood from the hell planet to use DNA to clone memories and clothing.
Semen demon, LOL. Also agree regarding Jeri Ryan, she's awesome in this. Another good body swap episode that is more over the top but I enjoy is 'Duet' from Stargate Atlantis.
So do these guys qualify as yet another Delta Quadrant species that mad at the Federation due to Janeway gunslinging BS?

having RANEK kiss 7 of 9
just another way the writers

I just cant get over Semen Demon, hiow could you? Why would you? Love it.
"Exorcised his semen demon" :')
I wanted him to say. Maybe we just murdered them. Not the first time its happened
I would have liked captain cobalt better
His uniform would agree :D
I was going to edit my comment but it's long and boring and I just thought of this. Regards the hologram haters coming on the DF junior and the two on the left not pointing their guns at Ensign Kim, if I remember correctly, for a long time, there was a ban on pointing the muzzle of a gun directly at a camera (I don't know if this is still in effect). You can get away with angling it slightly. That would explain the two on the left, if they pointed directly at Kim, their guns would be pointed at the viewer.
Quite good! The only issue to take is the 'indicative of aesthetic ideals that should be long-since outdated by the 24th century'.
Oh, they'll be there we'll past the 24th century and they're certainly not 'new' even in our century. Human nature doesn't change the same way the nature of a rock doesn't change, or a tree doesn't change. It's in our nature.
Gonna admit, I found bits of this episode a bit offensive. You have the Doctor, telling a woman that has had her autonomy ripped from her for most of her life, as he pilots her body like a person-ship, that she needs to relax and let things happen to her. That she, in a sense, needs to learn to just let someone else have fun with her body and just accept the ride cause she might just enjoy it too. It smacks of some really gross implications for me and just squicks me out when I watch this episode.
Haha, you said poo-pee

👍👍
Considering what happens to Seven regards her sexuality later, I wonder if her body getting aroused when receiving that massage was actually the Doctor's influence at all
Acting? Great. Plot? Cringe so hard I cramped my neck.
I always found this episode so cringey I'm actually having a hard time listening to a review about it, I've had to pause and come back to it like three times...

The idea that humans dont care about aesthetic ideals of themselves and others in the future is patently false. Otherwise the humans in starfleet would all look like Romulans with their one approved haircut and uniform. But we dont see that and in Voyager's case the captain sports new hair styles like every season or so. You dont see it in voyager but in TNG and DS9 you see uniforms change their styling.
"But the show creators said-"
Shush. When what a fiction creator says is in conflict with what is shown and demonstrated with the work then you should default to what is in the work.
If we still want to resolve this we can say that it only really counts for baldness or perhaps "ive got to watch my figure" is just a polite way to decline an over indulgence in food. It already kind of is that and given that there is a multitude of diseases brought on by overconsumption of any given food or drink and the best medicine is preventative medicine AND that it comes from the doctor it might just be that. Its less rude and off-putting than to say "no thank you, your food is going to kill me slowly."
"I want to express my indiviuality" is hardly the same as "I am pressured by societal expectation to conform to a harmful body ideal largely promoted by an anachronistic expectation of pleasing the male gaze".
I'm also unconvinced that what's shown in a show should always be treated as gospel, especially given the regular condradictions Trek throws. Ones, for example, like regularly suggesting replicated food is nutritionally balanced, then giving us the line I called out.
I'm not excusing such things because the answer to all of this is that it was a tv show in the 90s trying to appeal to the LCD of that time but I find it unhelpful to delve beyond the 4th wall for explanations for things shown on screen. As you know, what any one producer or writer or actor says can be in direct conflict.
As for the replicator thing an idea has floated about that "nutritionally balanced" doesn't mean you can skip your multivitamins it just means that the item is idealized in its makeup and will be every time. Where as real food will be imperfect. A replicated cheese cake will taste the same each time. A hand made cheese cake can vary. That sort of thing.
