When I was in high school, now over 50 years ago, the track team's shot putter was this big, annoy guy who could be a bit of a bully. I'll call him Mack. One day Mack was out practicing his shot put and I decided I would go out and bother him. I could be a bit annoying myself. I can't remember at all how far Mack could get the shot to go but after he threw one, I asked him if I could try it. He gave me the shot and sort of mockingly wished me luck. It was actually a little lighter than I thought it would be and I told Mack I could "get it out there" farther than his last effort. He laughed. I then proceeded to throw it like a baseball. My throw traveled beyond Mack's toss by about 5 feet. Today I decided to finally look it up to see if my throw was legal. I found that it was not. I also discovered with a little extra research that the shot was likely an 8 pound ball used by area high schools at the time. Not a surprise. I never was Hercules.
Thanks dude! I found out the spin technique shot put pros do needs a lot of practice and experience to not mess up so I thought "hmmm maybe there are easier versions" and I was right!!
What is a good method/drill to teach a youngster to keep their elbow up and release the shot at the proper angle? My niece is dropping her elbow and dropping the shot put down before the release. Thank you!
What weight do you recommend for these drills? Perhaps relative to strength and body mass? I am 55 yo female, 165, bench 170. Never threw b4 but you make it approachable
my daughter is learning this in middle school now. She is doing discus and shot. So is it ok to land outside the toe bar after you release it? I see everyone falling outside of it.
Throwing farther comes from the speed of your technique and how strong you are. If you have a competition in a couple of months I would focus on regular workouts in the gym and lots and lots of throws. Good luck!
I would Practice form more than anything else. It is possible that you are trying too hard to throw far when you would benefit more from practicing form and applying it to your throws. Also, leg and core work helps a ton.

Great question! Use the normal competition weight for your age group. It might be 3 or 3.5 kilograms.
4 kg

No it don’t count if she fall out
You can kick the back of the toe board as much as you want, but as soon as you touch or go over the top, it’s a scratch
Hi sir I want to ask that is 30 ft a good distance for shot put throw for a high school child?
For freshman year yeah but if you wanna be competitive you need to get over 40 and if you want to have a chance at winning states you need to get 50+
