      I feel bad saying this, but regardless of whether or not it seems fair, I feel like a side-by-side comparison of the “top contenders” might be a good thing.
      Honestly, I’m kind of getting frustrated in trying to decide on my next quadcopter, and as a channel that has continually displayed honesty and integrity throughout 6 years of videos, I truly would appreciate your input...it’s not like I’m going to pull the trigger on a new drone then “blame” you if I make a bad decision; I’m just banging my head on the proverbial wall here, and need some perspective from someone I trust.
      I’m shooting for the $400-700 price range, with stabilized camera gimble...and has good Nav lights, of course! lol
      The Mavic - performs pretty flawlessly, and has nice strobes. But with it’s NFZ’s and how “elitist” DJI seems to me, I wouldn’t give them a dollar of my business.
      Zino - I’ve always liked Hubsan quads, and was about to pre-purchase last fall...thankfully Chris (QC Guy) raised some concerns, and I *thankfully* held-off! I think the jury is STILL out on this one!
      Fimi X8 - I don’t know this manufacturer well enough to feel comfortable giving them that much money...at least not yet. If you guys continue to like yours, maybe I’d consider. 🤔 BUT DOES IT HAVE NICE STROBES? lol
      Yuneec Mantis - I know almost nothing about this drone, other than a guy up in Canadia mentioned that it was decent. Any thoughts, family?
      Anafi - although I really don’t care much for the LOOK of this quad, performance is what matters (that, and neat STROBES - which Anafi, sadly, is lacking). I would add that it seriously needs Obstacle Detection; but other than that, this is the quad I’m leaning towards.
      *sigh*
      This should be more fun, and less frustration! 😤

      @@calvarycustoms6681 I totally agree. Btw. nice reviews from TheRcSaylors - respect. I would like to buy a drone (my first drone). I am choosing between Hubsan Zino and Fimi X8. Price different is 175 USD between these two (425 USD vs 250 USD). Is these 175 USD worth it? Which would be better to buy? HT power lines could’ve interfered with fpv transmission out at 560m... looked like the drone was within about 100m of them. I’ve had clear X8 fpv out to 2000m when testing it over a forest. Great video & review, thanks!

      They could also be a reason why you had problems with the calibration. I've had mine for a few months now, and I've never had any calibration issues. There is a magnetic interference indicator in the app. How many bars do you have there?

    Welcome to the club, I've had mines for 6 months now and the first batch were good and I hope you got a good one now. After your update those issues will mostly be solved I brought mines for $370 (Pre-ordered) and although I own both new Mavic's I love flying this drone. I know you can't do this but I put those over the antenna range extender things on my remote and get over 4 miles out (over 8 miles RT). Your Cal issues will go away too and updates are very easy. Enjoy!

Full legal explanation would be great.. then a realistic legal explanation for someone who hates rules and is willing to bend completely stupid ones if it is low risk. Also there seems to be many clones of good drones like this on like aliexpress etc. Any red flags on that stuff? Anyone who has answers it would be great for us nooblets looking into this stuff. That FIMI did really well - probably the best approximation of a DJI drone that I have seen (at least, in a very long time). 😎
    I have a differing opinion about intentionally ignoring firmware updates. If the app/manual/etc. make you aware of available updates, you should apply them before flying, period. Even if you are not prompted, basic due diligence (“acting responsibly”) says you should make a reasonable effort to check for and apply updates. So, demonstrating the out-of-the-box-without-updates experience is:
    (1) setting a bad example for others;
    (2) denying the drone a good faith opportunity to fix known issues that have already been resolved via post-production updates, basically maximizing the chances it will disappoint and/or fail; and
    (3) in keeping with the above, not necessarily representative of the experience a responsible pilot - who will apply updates - can expect.
    I know you have great hearts and wouldn’t do this intentionally, but I have to be honest and say that it seems like you let your past negative experiences with Xiaomi and semi/sponsored reviewers cloud your better judgment and you kind of overcorrected by setting the FIMI up to fail (an outcome that would further validate those experiences) under the rather blah pretense of demonstrating the experience an uninformed and indifferent user (who probably won’t watch this video anyway) would have.
    If you put your best foot forward and the drone fails, great - that tells us we can expect the same and should shy away from it. If you don’t put your best foot forward, you haven’t really helped those of us who aim to be properly informed - maybe the drone is a dud, or maybe it just needs some routine TLC that it didn’t get.
    Hope that makes sense, and apologies if it comes across as being too critical. 🥴

    • @TheRcSaylors
      @TheRcSaylors 5 років тому

      Hey, you watch regularly and I really do greatly appreciate the feedback. My response wont be as long as your initial comment, so I do apologize for that. I completely see where you are coming from. Honestly I do see your viewpoint, but I have to Mostly disagree. I was trying to do due diligence by showing how this drone would fly without updates because there will be thousands of people that fly it this way, trust me. Granted, probably not a single person in our comments section because let's face it, you've taken the time to make a UA-cam account and let your voice be heard. Which means you've probably also taken the ti.e to research this drone, or other drones and know that most of them require firmware updates before your first flight. But if this were your first drone ever, why would you think that? Shouldnt this very expensive drone work right out of the box? I also have to point out that our app did not prompt us to do any firmware updates, like DJI drones do. I think that I could have definitely pressed more to the viewer, to update their firmware and not do what I did, but I did not go into this wanting this drone to fail. I just based this flight off of my track history of previous Xiaomi drones. I actually mention the fact that I want this drone to be awesome as it is their flag ship drone (I believe). Anyways, I hope you do not hear the wrong tone in my voice in this comment as I dont mean to be negative in any way. I just want to make sure you at least know my intentions with this video. I'm impressed with this drone so far and look forward to testing it more!

    Just cannot agree with some of your comments regarding the Fimi A3. Yes, its flighttime using the included charger leaves a lot to be desired (there is now another seperate charger available btw) but other than that, I have no issues with the way it works. I appreciate your channel and your morals but I just can't wrap my arms around doing a drone review without doing all required firmware updates needed. In fact as a 107 pilot I log my firmware updates as maintenance. I haven't seen a drone yet that didn't need initial firmware updates and that could be a safety issue. Not running your channel down, I watch all your videos. This one IMO, I just think maybe a bad practice is presented to new pilots by taking a drone out of the box and just flying it. Patients and planning are required when putting an aircraft up in our airspace and should never be rushed.

    • @floydmoats
      @floydmoats 5 років тому +1

      I'm really not trying to be argumentative but there is no aircraft that should be flown right out of the box. Everyone should have a preflight check list and be in no hurry or let themselves be rushed to get the bird in the air. You are the Pilot in Command and nothing happens until you approve it. As Pilot in Command YOU are responsible for any and all aspects concerning your flight, equipment, crew, airspace etc...

    Good video guys. I really do not know why you would not do updates before flying the first time. This drone has been out a while and the updates have corrected several issues related to the drone, APP. I have had and flown mine since early April. It is now, with the updates, a true competitor to the DJI Spark and Air.. For those who need obstacle avoidance, if that is added to a pro version this is a knockout punch to the Spark and Air. As for flight time, I have had 25+ min with a 10 cycle battery. If you wanted to push it to -10% close to 30+ min. Look forward to more videos. Be safe..

    Love your vids -- and I especially appreciate this one, but a couple of thoughts...
    First, saying the entire product name really isn't the mouthful you think it is. Xiaomi only sells SOME Fimi products, not all of them. The X8 SE is solely a Fimi product, from R&D to production to sale. Xiaomi is not involved in this Fimi model whatsoever. It's a common oversight.
    Second, as a Part 107 pilot, I tell you that the FAA STRONGLY suggests ALL aircrafts be updated as soon as updates are available from the manufacturer as a part of regular maintenance, and that ALL maintenance procedures and/or modifications be documented -- even a procedure as seemingly minor as changing the props on a drone (along with documenting all missions, location(s), any and all aircraft performance anomalies, and weather conditions during flight). The only real exceptions to maintenance documentation are things like cosmetic-only changes such as applying an aircraft's registration number to the body, performing calibrations, and changing batteries. That's about it!
    Third -- and last -- is only a rumor, so don't hold me to this: It's widely thought in the X8 SE fan circle that the "SE" in the X8 SE name identifies the drone model as "Standard Edition" and that Fimi is developing a "Pro" model in what will become an X8 line of Fimi drones. I hope it isn't only speculation.
    I know past Fimi drones have not worked well for you, so I'm happy to see your first Fimi X8 SE flight experience was good enough to earn an overall thumbs-up from you!
    Your videos are quite inviting and you make me feel like I'm part of your family! I hope you keep up your channel for many years to come!

    My fimi a3 does the same flippy thing when I turn moderately, I think it's left. I should have waited for the x8. Seems so much better. My gimble no longer flips side to side, so far. I had bought a second battery for it. One of them died on me. The battery date was 2016. It was an old battery! The other one is Jan. 2019. Not sure which one came with the drone but they must have been working on them for some time. I have moded the battery case by removing the dead battery and soldering wires. I am running a 2200 mha 3s battery strapped to the bottom and I get 18 min running down to about 10.5v. Not something I wanted to do as it should have worked to begin with. I have to say though It flies great, very stable gimble, and the up dates on the camera has improved.

      Xiaomi issued new guidance that the proper way to calibrate is to do while naked in the middle of a field, "to avoid any intereference with supreme high tech sensitive hardware". I can confirm that worked, and will explain more when I'm released from jail.
      Great video, I'm just waiting to hear about how the firmware updates fix ongoing issues before buying.

    Hi Saylors! Yeah, I just read (somewhere or other) that this quad really need a UHS-3 card to get the 4k, but your footage looks amazing! How do you feel about it vs the Zino? Cool beans! Been waiting to see yours in the air. Thanks for all you do! Happy flying 😊 By the way, people online keep telling me to get one of these. I've heard zero complaints about it - how rare is that?!

    • @TheRcSaylors
      @TheRcSaylors 5 років тому +1

      That's a great tip about the card, thank you! So far, my only real issue is the compass calibration. Very annoying on this drone. Other than that, it is pretty amazing! Obviously it is performing better than the Zino, but it also costs more. I still Love my Zino, though 😉 More to come on this drone within a week or so I hope!

    8:50 The difficult calibration of the FIMI X8 SE is a major downer for me, probably enough to prevent me from ordering. The footage quality and stability was great! I like the normal-sounding "non-chirping" props!

      As I wrote in a comment earlier, I never had any issues with calibration complaints, unless when I turn it on indoors for FW upgrades. I suspect there are some electromagnetic fields near the airstrip that interferes. Would be fun if the Saylors brought out a traditional compass there. After all, they're saylors, so bringing a compass should be compulsory. ;-)

  • @FerralVideo

    Your recording problems are because your SD card is not fast enough.
    This drone runs at a VERY high video bitrate out-of-the-box. If you still want to run 4K, you can turn down the quality drop-down to reduce the bitrate.
    To run at best quality you're going to need an ultra-high-seed memory card - a garden variety Class 10 won't cut it.
    Your signal range might have been hampered by those high-tension power lines. The ones in my side yard wreak havoc on my drones.
    Oh cool! That little bar underneath the "In Flight GPS" indicator is your motor power!
    Like on a DJI, the bar graph is your battery remaining, with auto-RTH flag and charge level warning tic-marks.
    When doing your flight time video, consider that this drone supports an emergency battery override function.
    It's not a good idea to use it, but you can continue flying past 10%, even past 0%, if it's not safe for you to land.
    Here is a battery chart.
    13.05v: 100%, full charge, 3S Li-HV.
    30%: User configurable low battery caution. This sets the first set of aural and visual Low Battery alerts.
    10.88v: 15%, Fixed low battery warning. A second alarm will sound. Once you land, the motors will lock out and forbid takeoff.
    10.85v: 10%, Fixed critical battery level. Auto-RTH when active wants to be on the ground by this charge level. Auto-land when active will trip at this level.
    10.6v: 0%, recommended minimum charge. Voltage begins falling a little faster if overridden. One "cycle" in the BMS counts from 100% to 0%.
    10.0v: Battery undervolt caution (voltage yellow)
    9.6v: An over-discharge warning appears on screen.
    9.0v: Over-discharge is logged in the BMS (voltage red). May trigger an unabortable emergency auto-land. Voltage now dropping rapidly. If you aren't already on the ground now, you're going to be *very* soon.
    >>Please, for the safety of your drone and your battery, *DO NOT TEST* how the drone responds to voltages THIS LOW. Nothing good can come of it.

    Your microSD card is too slow for the 4k bitrate (I think it's 100Mbitps). You don't only need a class 10 card, it has to be a U3 card (30Mbyteps write speed). Then recordings will probably not be interrupted anymore.

    If you're calibrating the drone by standing in one spot and turning in a circle, which means the drone is going in an about 3 foot circle, you might try holding the drone in one place and you do the 3 foot circle around the drone. --- I'm not sure that now is the right time to buy a new drone since the FAA has been changing the rules which went into effect last month (May 2019), and so far making it impossible to comply with them. It's like they're trying to kill the hobby of aviation and make hobby pilots into criminals. And the odd thing is in the past 5 years ever time FAA made a rule change they emailed me about it, this time the rules are already in place and I've not gotten any emails from FAA. Last year the courts deemed these new rules unconstitutional. But this time they managed to "sneak" the rules in by making them a "rider" attached to a totally unrelated bill. Which I don't know how that is even legal to do, but it is... that's how government works.
