Entertaining as it can be to watch someone dump all over a game they hate, I have to say a genuine showcase of fan praise - heartfelt, while still acknowledging weaknesses - just sets my pleasure synapses firing so much more, because it's something longtime gamers can more easily relate to; especially when you've been into the hobby for years and know what you like, you want to spend more time taking in and talking about stuff you enjoy, especially as your free time dwindles with age. I've only ever really put any time into the original MMX, though if I ever get around to the rest of the series I'll have to get back to you on where 4 falls into the hierarchy for me, which should be interesting since I'm obviously much less of an overall Mega Man aficionado than yourself. Thanks as always for running this great channel!

Slash Beast and Street Fighter Dragoon are such huge pains, especially when you are playing as Zero. That counter move has almost literally no wind up whatsoever, so it's nearly impossible to dodge. I do remember coming up with some sort of strategy for the peacock guy. I think there's some specific pattern that makes the homing feathers dodgeable, but it took numerous tries for me to figure out and now I have forgotten it...
The voice actor for X was given zero (no pun intended) context, so she just read the lines she was told to read and the voice directors didn't even bother doing anything to fix it. Granted, I'm not the most well educated person on this topic, but there is an interview with the actor online, which explains a lot more about why everything happened the way it did
You have good taste! X4 is one of my favorite games of all time, too, but I honestly have to say I've never played through it as X. Being able to play through as Zero with the ever-expanding list of attack combinations was a revelation. It was mind-blowing to child me, and it still to this day hasn't gotten old. Fantastic love letter to a classic game, Mr Skeltal.
Really loved this vid i've been on a huge hyperfixation of the X and Zero games the past few weeks and its awesome to know that people still think about these games all these years later i could really see how much love and dedication you have for X4!

Oooh yeah baby! I absolutely adored Megaman X 4! My favorite of all the X games! I played it for the first time 2022 to completion (I couldn't finish them as a kid lol) thanks to the Legacy collection as well as the japanese restoration mods to be able to experience the game in the original dub w/ subtitles, as soon as I played X's story, I directly started Zero. My god, what a rush was to play as Zero, the final boss which gave me quite a bit of trouble, I absolutely destroyed as Zero first time. Truly an amazing game. An amazing game followed up by a great video by one of my favorite skeletons on the internet! I liked the game so much so that I absolutely had to buy the Kotobukiya X and Zero plastic models cause I just loved them so much.
@@ASkeleton Yeah, it took a while for me to find one that was at good price, but got them both in a pack for 70€ (by adding the import fees) ~ as they were on offer, kotobukiya stuff is usually overly expensive... So when I saw an offer for both I kinda had to grab it.
I've never been big into the X games, but it was a real joy watching this video and listening to you gush for 20 minutes. You've convinced me to give the series another go sometime, haha. One game that I AM a big fan of though is Ghost Trick! Its squarely focused on its story and characters, and so its quite different from what you usually put on the channel, but if that stuff interests you, I can't recommend it enough! Its one of my personal favorite games of all time - Engaging mystery, lovable characters, fun writing, and the best dog in gaming. What more can you ask for? lol

On that note, for your next shmup round up, have you heard of "A grande bagunça espacial - The big space mess" it's a shmup that is one of those games that is so terrible it's great. Like a great B movie the dev clearly had a ton of heart to make up for their lack of skill. It has branching paths, characters with different abilities, and is actually kind of good, sort of. It's kind of like all the bad stuff somehow combines to be kinda ok. Like the Dev was the best I can do is program it this way, so how can I work around my lack of skill to try to make it work and the game ends up being worth a look. Edit: Lol just looked at the steam reviews for A grande bagunça espacial and the top positive review compared this game to AIDS and then recommended it. Yep.

I would like to see a sequel to the last ZX advent game, I really like the Megaman X games, but I preferred the ones released before Axle was introduced into the series. I was interested I seeing a release of the fan game "mega man x corrupted," I doubt that will ever be made playable to the public.

5:00 It's worth noting that the "W" on Zero's gem lights up to STOP his berserk rampage, not to push it forward, and there's a very simple explanation to it: Despite his affinity for skulls, Dr. Wily does not want to see himself as the villain of the story. He's just bitter, resentful, and angry that his genius was overshadowed and ignored in favor of Dr. Light's sweet speech about making robots people, which is funny because the fact there's a whole alternate timeline (Battle Network) about following Wily's vision where the world is much better off than the main one following Dr. Light, makes it seem like Wily was right about ruling the world... And yet, Wily can't overcome his own feelings to prove he's the better genius, thus earning the title of "bad guy". Anyways, if you want proof that Dr. Wily is not TRULY evil, just look at Bass, who is basically a prototype for Zero. Remember when Bass betrayed MegaMan and raided Dr. Light's lab? He did NOT kill Dr. Light even though he could. Do you know why? Because he was on a mission to get the Super Adapter, but Bass was made only to defeat MegaMan and prove he's the strongest robot which by proxy would make Wily the greatest creator, it's just an extension of his rivalry with Light. Another bit of trivia is that Bass really cares for his robo-dog Treble, Dr. Wily's programming allowed that, for whatever reason. Also, Wily doesn't even have a proper kill count, or even implied kills... He's nothing in comparison to Sigma, and Vile or Weil. All that being said, Zero was sealed because his programming was unfinished, and we know the Berserk Zero is a product of it. It's always been weird to me that people believe Wily made Zero to be a killing machine, when it's completely unprecedented. Of course, defeating Light's creations is an exception, Wily DID want that 100%, but everyone else? It doesn't really make sense...
Ah, a man of true taste. X4 is absolutely my favorite X game and almost certainly my favorite Mega Man game overall. It's sort of a tossup between this, and og 2 and 3. Thank you for acknowledging the laser scarf. I will remember Command Mission exists, even if no one else will. Fuggin' love that game. Big agreement on the intro music in US/EU being better. Ditto for X5. The opening riff on Zero's theme from X1 is just 🤌, and the melancholy of X5's credits is so damn good, especially given how it attempted to end the series. On that note, I'll only disagree with the "best ost" take insofar that I think X5 at least has higher highs. X vs. Zero is, like, one of the greatest video game songs ever made. And man, I will never, ever forgot playing X5 the first time and hearing the reprisal of the MM1 Wily Boss theme kick in for the Shadow Devil. Time fuggin' FROZE in those couple seconds between the song starting and the goo coming from off screen. But uh, yea, anyway. X4. Awesome game. Late 90s Capcom was on fire in the 2D department. MM8 and X4. Breath of Fire 3 and 4. Street Fighter 3 and Alpha 3. Absolute peak.
There's a fan patch that fixes some of X5's glaring issues. I'm considering trying it out maybe I'll finally be able to see in it what other people do. Part of me still can't help but adore the soundtracks to X5 and X6, but those games also give me the urge to strangle something. The first MMX will always be my top favorite, but MMX4? It's damn close
X4 is so good, this is a good look at this classic, I am a big fan of the somber theme from the Japanese theme , it sets the mood for the events to follow in the game, but that US theme is such a banger.
I love the first Mega Man X, and I think it's time I get through the rest! The og Mega Man games always will hold a special place in my heart, and I really do hope Capcom will give the X series another go, like they did for og with 11. It's such a good franchise, with run and gun platformers being some of the most fun you can get out of video games. Also, another great video! It's just nice to hear someone be passionate about cool games!
Having marathoned the entire X series last year (except the RPG spinoff), honestly... the PS1 entries have EASILY my favorite realization of the artstyle with _godly_ spritework but a mix of old game jank and weird mechanics just completely held X4 back from being my favorite over the SNES entries. (4 specifically because 5 and 6 use the same engine but they're kind of... not great) Like the weird and unnecessary animation delays on dashing and walljumping where it stops you _completely_ for several frames before the move actually comes out, or the weirdly inconsistent level design and cryptic upgrade locations (spiderweb walljump), or the plasma shot and Zero taking AGES to kill anything because they're low-damage multihits and only the first hit does anything while the rest just tink off of s, or X4's story being _hilariously_ terrible even by X standards. It's genuinely a shame because again it's easily the BEST iteration of the setting in _sick_ 2D art and it's undeniably objectively a cool as HELL setting that I would've _loved_ this version of if it wasn't for those gameplay hiccups that X1 and X2 didn't have.

i had rockman x4 on pc, and weirdly it was named rockman instead of megaman, apparently it was known as rockman only in japan, that made us confused too we thought this cooler version is probably different than the one we had on nes which was called megaman. and it was big deal too, since games like that were super rare on pc, usually on pc in old times you would only see games like age of empire and warcraft master of orion etc
I only played the first one on the switch because Egoraptor told me to. It’s great even tho I got my ass kicked. Then i realized the game had more then just the first one lol
Nice video as usual. Regarding your lamenting the lack of a new Megaman X game, IIRC it's because Capcom got it bitter when Inafune left. I guess that if you want more of a similar thing Gunvolt would be your best bet as a modern title.

This is hands down my one of my favorite ps1 games. This along with Super Puzzle Fighters, Mushashi, and Alundra. Ps1 had some fantastic hidden gems.

Kujacker is a pun making combining the Japanese word for Peacock (Kujaku) and Highjacker. Hence, Kujacker.

i had rockman x4 on pc, and weirdly it was named rockman instead of megaman, apparently it was known as rockman only in japan, that made us confused too we thought this cooler version is probably different than the one we had on nes which was called megaman. and it was big deal too, since games like that were super rare on pc, usually on pc in old times you would only see games like age of empire and warcraft master of orion etc
I only played the first one on the switch because Egoraptor told me to. It’s great even tho I got my ass kicked. Then i realized the game had more then just the first one lol

Regarding your lamenting the lack of a new Megaman X game, IIRC it's because Capcom got it bitter when Inafune left.
I guess that if you want more of a similar thing Gunvolt would be your best bet as a modern title.
