  • This is the hauntingly beautiful theme to the Song of Norway sung by international opera singer Frank Porretta, who portrayed Edvard Grieg's closest friend Richard Nordraak in the film, with the breathtaking beauty of Norway as the backdrop.
This wonderful 1970 musical told the story of the musical career of Norway's most famous composer, Edvard Grieg (portrayed by Toralv Maurstad).

Two of the tenors (Frank Porretta) who sang this role from "Song of Norway" on Broadway and elsewhere also performed in opera. I saw Porretta in 1966 singing in French composer Ambroise Thomas' rarely performed "Mignon" at San Francisco Opera's budget-priced "Spring Opera Theater [SPOT]" at the War Memorial Opera House. The following year, Olvis sang the lead role in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci". These were my first "Pagliacci" (and only "Mignon"). I also saw Porretta's son (also named Frank) perform the role of Samson to Stephanie Blythe's Dalila in Pittsburgh Opera's perofrmance of Saint-Saens' "Samson et Dalila".

Wow, what a voice! I remember seeing this originally in the theater. That song gave me goosebumps, still does. On a big screen the film itself was breathtaking too. It's a hard song to sing, and Frank did a brilliant job. These 2 men were best friends, both straight, and Grieg was getting ready to give up his musical career. It's about 1 friend encouraging another to keep at it. Sad that people would read something else into it...

We went to see this as a class trip in 6th grade. Not sure why we did but we just liked being out of class. Never have seen it again. I should watch it again to see what I remember.

Fortunately, I saw this movie on the big screen when it first released. Florence Henderson never looked so beautiful, even rivaled the mountain peaks. I got the original vinyl album still, wonderful cover art to a yet wonderful track full of memorable songs. I currently have the movie recorded on VHS, one of my last surviving collectibles I recorded some time ago.

This is the scene where people talked about having "gay overtones". What a shame this film was dismissed as being a bad musical. It's not. The cinematography and music are magnificent. To see the film within context, the effect is quite moving.

I saw David Bowie wearing this T Shirt too, which is what prompted me to view this video. Lovely.

@Classicsatdusk I totally agree. It is a beautiful movie and not at all a "bad" musical. What is gay about it? The friendship between two men? Men need friends just as women do.

I suppose if there are gay overtones in this scene its in the way Porretta is singing to Grieg, almost in a loving romantic way. Who cares. The film is so unfairly maligned. Sure it has some silly choreography. Alot of film musicals do. The solo numbers, like this one working better than the ones that involve dancers. Dramatically the film is very moving. It's one of only 16 films shot in SUPER PANAVISION 70mm. Christina Schollin is beautiful and touching. Deserves to be restored

I don't get any gay overtones. As has been mentioned, both men were in love with and wanted to marry the same woman. And there is something else both men were in love with: Norway. More specifically the music and literature of Norway. If there were any attempted seduction here, it was Porreta's character trying to get Grieg to continue to write Norwegian music.

@CARSONART I do not see "gay" overtones at all. This man is singing about something he loves. They both were in love with the same woman in the movie, not with each other.

Thank you for your comment. I love this movie. Why do people have to try and pervert things? I guess it is their own sick minds.

A Lyric Tenor who would be cautioned to avoid Dramatic Roles since a wobble is
already evident. Just listen to Joseph Schmidt

There are no gay overtones to this movie. Porretta is very talented and is a passionate singer. It is one of my favorite movies and I am very old-fashioned about things.
