  • Orchids are really a lot ... How they look? Are they difficult to grow? This is the theme of today's episode of the "Full House of Flowers" program. In orchard shops among orchids, we often find specimens described as Cambria, or simply as an orchid. It does not say much to us ... How do we know how to ensure proper growing conditions for our new plant? Today a hint about these orchids that stand in front of me. I invite you.
In garden stores and florists we usually find phalanges. They are invariably the most popular because they have numerous, large, colorful flowers that bloom even for several months. But these are not the only orchids we can buy. You can choose from a number of other species that can also decorate our homes. The only problem can be their identification. We suggest that this orchid is Colmanara.
Colmanara "Red Cat" is a crossbreed who perfectly adapted to our home conditions. It blooms for a long time and is easy to grow.
Feels good at the relatively high temperature that prevails in the apartment. It can be grown on window sills of all windows except the northern one. Requires scattered light, possibly translucent through other plants. We transplant it after flowering, if we consider it necessary, we cut off the dried flower shoot. Sprinkling with these plants is not particularly advisable, and water them only when the substrate dries well.
Kolmans are generally blooming in spring. But if good cultivation conditions are ensured, they can repeat the blooming also in autumn. In sunny weather, the flowers gently smell.
In stores, we can often find orchids marked as Cambria. It is worth knowing that Cambria is a commercial name for different orchid cultivars, gathering numerous interspecies hybrids. Like most orchids, they like scattered light and the feature of many plants in this group are dotted or marbled flowers. But these spotted flowers belong to another orchid.
Odontoglossum and hybrids of this species is another example of orchids that bloom for a long time in our apartments. This specimen has already been with me for 5 weeks, decorated with flowers. His second name is a tongue.
The most common colors of flowers of this plant are red, yellow, pink and white, and they are accompanied by a beautiful specimen of contrasting color. Flower shapes are also very different. After flowering, cut out the dried flower shoot and if necessary, replant the plant. Generally, Odontoglossum are orchids that should be given a rest period at cooler temperatures, but hybrids are also available that better tolerate a constant, warmer, domestic temperature.
An interesting fact is that from mid-May to mid-September we can put it outside on the balcony or terrace. This will strengthen their resistance.
And in addition, the reduced temperature will stimulate the flowering plant. Another species of orchid, which can also be exhibited outside, is katleja. Remember, however, that home pot plants can not be immediately exposed to sunny places. Direct exposure of rays would certainly burn them. First, put them in the shade. Only when the plant gets used to the outside conditions can we gradually put them in the sun.
Katleja well tolerates temperatures from 16 to 30 degrees Celsius. To initiate flowering it is necessary to have a temperature difference lasting several weeks between day and night, at least 5 degrees Celsius.
Gorgeous orchids are also dendrobia, including phalenopsis dendrobia, which do not need a rest period, and therefore feel perfectly at housing temperatures of 18-23 degrees Celsius. Other dendrobia to initiate flowering should go through a resting period. However, this does not apply to the lovely dendrobium phalenopsis, which we will be talking about.
We will certainly come back to the topic of orchids. In the meantime, I invite you to the next episode of the "Full House of Flowers" program next week.
