You see a rifle in the sporting goods section and say to yourself " oh that's a nice peice". But then looking at this rifle today and you say to yourself " man those Germanic folk really know how to make a firearm alright". That is an exquisite peice of shooting excellence.
Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus! It's a great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!
The barrel was factory threaded in 1/2"UNF thread. It was not shortened, Sound moderators are popular here in the UK and many rifles including Steyr are ready screw cut out from the box.
Hi Greg. I used to have a pro hunter. And I loved a lot of the features you are pointing out there like the safe bolt system and the mag set up. It was very accurate. But one problem was the front end of the stock. It was to flexible and caused the barrel to touch from time to time. I changed it for the steyr tactical elite. .308
Dream rifle! Love the German #1 reticle...also the stainless! I had a scout a while back, and have toured around a number of rifles, and now need to get myself a pro-hunter. I miss the action.
Same here with anything else than standard cartridges. That is why I own most popular .223Rem, .243Win, .308Win and so on. I can get factory ammo from any local shot if have to, but anything less popular and no local supplies and prices are silly. Reloading is the only way forward in the UK if you own something like 8x56R. ATB, Greg
yes mine was the mk1, i heard that they resolved the problem with the mk2. i still say they are a great rifle. that is why i stuck with steyr when changing.
These are a great rifle. I have one chambered in .223. very well balanced and very accurate. getting 1/4 MOA at 100 yards with Hornady rounds. would love to see an in depth review showing the nitty gritty of this rifle. how heavy/light the set trigger actually is. The purpose of the grooves in the bolt, the 2 magazine settings etc. I have not been able to find a proper review of this rifle yet lol.
The mag settings are magazine feed , that is normal all the way in. Second setting where the mag is dropped down a little is for feeding single shot. The mag is disabled. The groves no ideal.
Hi Paul, I guess this is one of the reasons Pro Hunters are not so popular in the UK as people repeat that story. I've heard about this issue before I bought mine and tested it to death with bipod and heavy T8 mod and never managed to get a flyer and my rifle shoots consistently no matter what I did. Maybe it was real with previous mk1 stock as I have mk2 which suppose to be stiffer. Was your Pro Hunter early model or later black stock? Greg
How do you like the vintage Zeiss? I am considering purchasing that exact model used and really enjoy the German #1 reticle. Overall quality and performance stack up well for you?
Is it scout or tactical elite? I think I only shot scout before and never handled Sako TRG. I have been happy with my Pro Hunter and it is accurate according to my standards, but I use it for hunting and shooting only up to 200m. It shoots 0.4" with my 150gr and 180gr reloads at 100m. There shoot be another video about load development for it. Good luck whatever you buy! I am sure they are both good rifles, but easier to resell Sako if you change your mind.
I'm looking at one of these in 300mag. I've been looking at Sako too. But I just love the looks of that rifle. Some say it's ugly, but I think it's unique. Also what are your views on Hanael rifles. Hope I spelled that right. There is a great sale on them right now, but hard to find any real good info on them. I'm a Canadian but I love European rifles. You guys just build such quality rifles.
Haenel Jaeger 10 become very popular here mainly because it is decent quality for not that much money. I looked at one at some point it was quite nice. I dont own one myself and haven't even shot one, so cant really comment more than they look good value for money.
I've been looking at that rifle, same set up but with the heavy barrel. What is it like to live with because my second choice would be the Sako trg 22. Its a little more expensive for the sako but accuracy is all I'm bothered about so if they produce the same kind of groups the mannlicher seems a good deal
+elstyr When put safety on you automatically disengage a set trigger feature, so the next time you want to make a shot your hair trigger is unset. Just a safety feature I think it is quite good idea.
I learned something new about my rifle today. I didnt know you could leave the mag in the first klick, i always pushed the bolt half way up befor inserting the mag, so i could load nr 5 :) i have the exact same setup exept, my scope is a leopold vx3. Do you or any one with this rifle have any idea if or were i can get hold of a tactical or costom stock? Its not that i dont like the standart its just that i
+RoeStalker Thanks for showing the operation of the stock spacers. I've been looking all over the internet to see how that's done. I've all but decided on a Steyr Pro Hunter now.
I use a pro hunter amoung other rifles. But for this purpose let's look at 2 others and compare. A Tika standard rifle in 30-06 a Remington 700 bdl chambered for 8mm mag the Pro Hunter is a 300 win mag. All 3 are incredibly accurate rifles. Sub MOA. However the Remington was all over the paper untill I glass bedded it then it came into its own. The Pro Hunter was just right on straight out of the box. The trigger is nice and crisp I would like a little less pull weight but do not know how to adjust it and the book says take it to a gunsmith. The Tika has the best trigger and is easily adjustable. The Remington is 40 years old in perfect condition and the trigger is almost as good as the pro Hunter nothing wrong there. The Remington is the heavier of the 3 wood stock but the pro Hunter as also heavy the Tika is light. The bolt Handel is the only real flaw of the pro Hunter. I am probly the only one in the world who hates it. I am using high mounts when on my Tika with the very same Meopta scope I use low mounts. The bolt handle on the pro Hunter contacts the eyepiece of the scope so the scope sits higher. I don't like that. I say a pro Hunter is a nice rifle I will never sell mine and shot lots of game with it but I like the Tika better.
Okay. Thanks for your reply. I really like old scopes. I'm at the moment looking for an old Swarovski. I have seen a few but not the biggest magnification etc that i am looking for. Hope you have a great day!

i just bought a steyr pro hunter in 30.06. very high quality rifle at a affordable price.
I have the same rifle in 6.5x55swedish mauser and it is the best rifle i have ever tried :)

Have gotten 1/2 MOA at 200 yards with reloads and I don't consider my self export shooter...Very good rifle....
Nice one!
my favorite weapon in the 260 rem steyr mannlicher pro hunter
The barrel was factory threaded in 1/2"UNF thread. It was not shortened, Sound moderators are popular here in the UK and many rifles including Steyr are ready screw cut out from the box.
Have a Steyr Mannlicher classic in 300 winmag . Just love the steyr

Great rifle and scope combination.

Thanks, I usually prefer wooden stocks, but plastic is better option in always wet Scotland
Steyr! Gute Wahl!
No problems with mine. Very accurate, smooth bolt, nice trigger.
Glad you enjoyed it
Glad you like it
Nice bit of kit mate. The Germans and Austrians make quality stuff.
Beautiful rifle Greg I can see why your pleased with it.
I'll give Barnes a try, but not sure if they are available in any of my local gunshops. SSTs were most accurate so far in this rifle.
That is one nice set-up! The barrel is a nice too!
Very beautiful rifle, exquisite glass, and awesome suppressor. Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
I really like it, it shoots straight and I dont feel bad taking nice wooden stock when it's raining
Did you ever have any issues with accuracy and the forend flexing when it had a bipod mounted?
@@jamieshepherdson212 No
Very nice setup!

I have the same model rifle, but a .243 with a 8x56 Schmidt and bender and a PES mod it's a awesome rifle and extremely accurate
Hi, what rounds does your .243 like? Im just about to start reloading for mine.
Regards,
@@claytonmcleod2497 I guess you found what works best. But I have the exact same rifle in .243. I run vhit n160 75gr 47gr powder
I'm ordering the 270win! Love Steyr!
+Vibrantjames writing new album due 2016 Good for you it is a good rifle
How do you like the vintage Zeiss? I am considering purchasing that exact model used and really enjoy the German #1 reticle. Overall quality and performance stack up well for you?
These are good quality scopes and quite cheap these days. Do not have it any more, but worked fine.

Nice looking setup Greg!
Thanks Jonathan
German #1 is good solid low light hunting reticule. To my eyes it is better at night than illuminated reticules.

Very nice rifle and scope. If i'm right its an older Zeiss model right?
How much do you like that zeiss diavari scope?
Dont have the rifle or scope any more. Was ok.
1:36: I didn't know you can do that. What would be the use case for this feature?
+elstyr When put safety on you automatically disengage a set trigger feature, so the next time you want to make a shot your hair trigger is unset. Just a safety feature I think it is quite good idea.
How do you find tactical elite? I tried early steyr scout in .308 with short 19" barrel years ago
Excellent video.Thank you for the upload.
Great review
That scope appears to be mounted very high. Is that necessary?
No, can be mounted lower, I think these were the rings I had available t the time.
Glad to hear that as I just got one and would hate to mount the scope so high.
How far was the target, 20 feet maybe? What?
Good looking package you got there! How does the rifle shoot at 100 meters?
+pacifer1234 Easily 0.5" with reloads
Thanks, yes Zeiss must be 20-30 years old.
hey i'm considering to buy one of these, have you had any problems with the pro hunter?
Why no one ever bedding styer stock ?
I learned something new about my rifle today. Nice rifle!
Is that stainless?
Yes
What groups can i expect from this rifle?
Depends on your shooting abilities, I managed below half moa with my reloads.
How much did that cost via I want one now
Thanks

is the Steyr offered in 223?
+Conrad Rawhouser Sure
RoeStalker what scope is this
+Palmer's Guns & Gear Old Zeiss 2.5-10x52 if I remember correctly
One of the best scopes ever made. Early 80's.
yeah there exists a 223 hunting rifle from steyr. but for about 400 euros more you can also get an steyr aug in 223

308 twist ?
I think it was 1:12, dont have the rifle any more.
what thread cut is it?
1/2"UNF if I remember correctly
What's the average price of this rifle right now, if anyone knows?
In the UK new ProHunter is about £1000 +£200 for stainless version. Used sell for about half that.
+Dale Pope In the States they run about $650-675 if you know where to look.
