I am a recent fan and the depth of Ms. Swift’s poetic artistry is just stunning. The majority of people who only know her by Shake It Off are missing out on such an amazing artist. She so much deserves all her success. She bridges so many genres so effortlessly.
According to me, this song is about a woman who is looking back on a relationship that ended. The woman seems to moved on from the pain of the loss, but still wonders how they could have come close to a lifetime together and parted ways. As she's speaking to her ex-lover, she wants to know if there's anything she could have done differently to keep them together. The first verse she tells her ex-lover that she's doing well and learning to live her life to the fullest (Been saying "yes" instead of "no") She thinks of him at times, and thought she saw him at the bus stop. "I hit the ground running each night" might mean that while she's enjoying her life, she does notice that she's not doing those things with him. She reflects on their relationship, and decides that just because it didn't work out, doesn't mean their love wasn't worth it. The pre-chorus she was surprised that they ended but now she has come to terms with it and used the painful experience to grow even more as a person (And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow) The chorus she remembers their time together and muses that they "were something" special (But we were something, don't you think so?). If the wishes she had made when they were together had come true, he would have been the one she spent her life with (And if my wishes came true It would have been you). It's unclear if she still wants that. She admits that it's her fault too(In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone). Whether she still wants to be with him or not, she thinks it would have been fun if he had been the one she settled down with, so their story together could go on for the rest of their lives. In the 2nd chorus she admits that she has "no defense" for "digging up the grave" of their love to talk with him, but she keeps thinking about how close they seemingly came to staying together permanently. I recently broke up with my 4-yr-long relationship and this song tears me up everytime. I´m just amazed by how identified I feel with the lyrics. Well, you know, I'm 52 and a Beatlemaniac. I never cared much for modern pop music, with very few exceptions. I read some excellent reviews of this album and thought I'd give it a go (always nice to expand one's horizons). I have to say that I love it. This is serious stuff, and not a flashy pop song in sight. I notice that Swift made Rolling Stone's top 100 songwriters of all time, at the age of (get this) 25 -- an enormous accolade. Well done, Miss Swift. I can't stop listening.
I knew it. I'm a 19-year-old with a growingly huge obsession for The Beatles and all my friends who love The Beatles also really like TS, they resemble somehow.
As great as this album is, the same level of songwriting craft is all over her other albums/songs, even the "flashy pop" songs. Of course, it's weird to think of "flashy pop" as a negative coming from a Beatles fan, considering they kinda invented the genre!

Well don’t forget to credit her producers, who were the main reasons why her music could adapt to genres. There was her first couple albums with a country producer whose name escapes me, then her first works with Max Martin, Shellback and Jeff Bhasker in Red and 1989, and then Jack Antonoff taking centre stage in 1989, reputation and Lover, and now Aaron Dessner on folklore.

I think this line means that they never cared about the rules, but they made the most of their time. Also using the word "count" that relates to the theme of the numbers, but also refers to "making the most of"

I know everyone hates TTPD but I've been a fan of TS since around 2018 & I didn't get the hype surrounding Evermore & Midnights. At first I didn't even like Folkore but ended up considering it among her 4 best albums. But TTPD I loved instantly. Well, you know, I'm 52 and a Beatlemaniac. I never cared much for modern pop music, with very few exceptions. I read some excellent reviews of this album and thought I'd give it a go (always nice to expand one's horizons). I have to say that I love it. This is serious stuff, and not a flashy pop song in sight. I notice that Swift made Rolling Stone's top 100 songwriters of all time, at the age of (get this) 25 -- an enormous accolade. Well done, Miss Swift. I can't stop listening.
I knew it. I'm a 19-year-old with a growingly huge obsession for The Beatles and all my friends who love The Beatles also really like TS, they resemble somehow.

Well don’t forget to credit her producers, who were the main reasons why her music could adapt to genres. There was her first couple albums with a country producer whose name escapes me, then her first works with Max Martin, Shellback and Jeff Bhasker in Red and 1989, and then Jack Antonoff taking centre stage in 1989, reputation and Lover, and now Aaron Dessner on folklore.
