  • Welcome to the first episode of KEEPING UP WITH THE PUGLITOS.
We have a whole litter of brand new pug puppies! YAY! They are adorable in their most miniscule form, but this time is also critical. For pug puppies from 1 - 2 weeks, we have to make sure nothing goes wrong with these tiny, vulnerable (feeding-pooping-sleeping) fluffballs. We've been doing this for ages, but it still feels new every time.
Here are 4 things we watch for when caring for newborn pug puppies:
    1. Appropriate temperature - since newborns could not regulate body temperature on their own, they rely on their mother's body heat for warmth, and scoot away when they feel too warm. If/when mama pug is not available, we provide heat lamps for when the room is cold, or a fan/AC when the room becomes too warm.
    2. Nutrition - while mama pug is responsible for this, one must still be watchful especially in a big litter like this. One pup might get left behind, or mama pug might not have enough milk. Weighing the pups daily is also helpful in assessing their overall growth and nutrition.
    3. Elimination - mama pug also does this herself. She stimulates the pup's genital area so the little ones can pee and poop for the first 2-3 weeks. However, some mothers may lack this instinct. If that's the case, what we do is take a moist cloth or cotton ball and stimulate the pup's genital area. That action mimics mama pug's actions and does the same job.
    4. Mother dog's health - since our pug mama usually does all the puppy chores herself, we make sure she is well nourished and comfortable in her den with the pups. After all, she has a whole litter of pups to feed. AND her body needs to recover. We provide support where needed because just as it is with us humans, motherhood, while rewarding, is not easy for our furry friends. It can take a toll on their health too if not well cared for. So yes, give your mama dogs more love!
Follow our tiny puglitos' progress as they grow from 1 - 2 weeks old! Have some hearty giggles while watching them embark the milestones of puppyhood.
