coming from Illustrator, Sketchup is driving me nuts. You shouldn't have to go through all this just to scale something by dimensions, if I click on an object, I should be able to type a value into the 'measurements' box sitting right there, but you can't. Seems so unintuitive
This is immensely helpful- thank you! Sometimes you don't know exactly how to phrase the issue you are facing into a google search to find the answers you need. This will save me a lot of tedious math work.
Is the method somehow different for Mac vs PC? After I dial in the dimensions I want to use and press enter, (as mentioned in the video at around 1:45) it does not prompt me to choose a scaleup option, rather it simply inputs the detentions as scale reference points and the task is still my own to resize utilizing the reference points. Still very tedious, but a lot better than going freehand I suppose.
Onah Valentine if you click the slide (in the scale tool) to deal with just the width (or hight) and type in a dimension with ‘ or “ and hit enter it will just make that dimension the with. Or hight. that one Dimension.
I guess I don't know what buttons your clicking. I left click and it starts to measure then go to the next point and click again and it just disappears. Hitting enter does nothing at all.
@@88wasylek open tape click from the starting point then click on the ending point then type the value (without moving the mouse or anything) and press Enter
Is there an answer to this question? We may not be working in a cube where every edge is the same size. It may be a long thin stick and we just want to lower its height.
There is one caveat though. When you resize an object inside the group or component, you're also resizing the scale of the measurements anything you created outside that group or component is out of scale and can no longer be used for the newly resized object. I just ran into this it kind of throws a wrench into entire model.
This looked like my solution. But when I get to the last part, the resize model question it still resized the object to scale, not just the one dimension. So I had a 12"x6"x6" cube. I followed the instructions and put the mark on the 12" axis out to 15". After answering yes to the question I had a 15"x7.25"x7.25" cube. It does not seem possible to just stretch or shrink an object to a specific number without affecting the entire scale. I am using the free version (17.2.2555 64-bit) so maybe that's my problem.
Oh.MY.Gosh - you deserve all the likes, all the time. I consider myself very competent with Sketchup and I'm kicking myself for not knowing this...I have always used a line for measurements and missed this such useful feature, especially for scale ratio's that are non-recurring decimals. This has helped me so much man, Kudo's
The key is at 1:45. With the entity selected, left-click, draw the tape measure and click to finish drawing the tape measure (it will seems like you didn't do anything). Let go of your mouse and simply use the keyboard to type in the dimension. Hope that helps.
Haha, your article is exactly like a UA-cam video i made a couple years ago on the proportionality theorem in geometry and trig. I have a degree in medical and areospace engineering and ratios/proportions i use constantly in sketchup. Especially with the scale tool. Knowin that 1.0 is 100%, and if i know i have 5'9", and i need to scale that down to 3 feet, use some algebra to find the percentage of reduction and then type that in as a decimal... or just use the tape measure method hahaha. Iij use both but for different applications. Usually i use scale tool to scale it by 1000%, use solid tools, then scale down by 0.001 to get back to original size. Sxaling up prevents tiny faces from being cut into the mesh.
How do I rescale lettering so it fits perfectly within a square or rectangle? Can't be sure it has any lines parallel to an axis to stretch to the edge of something.
thank you for this great tip! I have a question, If I have a drawing at a 1:1 scale and want to change it to quarter scale (1/4") is it possible to do in on SketchUp?
I appreciate the hard work that goes into making these...but is there a way to download the sketchup program? Otherwise, this video feels out of date as the app is now a web app.
Doesn't seem to work with imported 3d models. Coming from Solid Edge, Inventor and AutoCad, I have to say this program is extremely unintuitive. Having to google to figure out how to stretch a simple object is insane.
Is there a way to scale a stretched model by snapping specific verticies of it with the vertices of the original model ? [EXample] Box (A) : is scaled proberly but its empty inside Box (B) : is filled with some objects but its stretched I wanna scale (B) : because i want it to be scaled exactly 100% like (A)
This could have been helpful if it actually worked. When I measure the distance and type in a specific number, SketchUp doesn't ask me whether I want to resize the object, but rather simply adjusts the tape to the given number.

You can actually, just type in 700mm for instance. (700 mm, with a space, does not work though)
Same for me. Using that after Solidworks is a torture.

I think the missing element is that you have to measure from POINT to POINT for scaling, not edge to edge.
I have the same problem, did you ever find a way to do this on the mac? I am stumped.
Point to point rather than edges
How do you unlock the ratios just so you can only resize in one axle?
this is good but what i want is how to resize X and Y axis individually without the entire model resizing automatically

Such a good tip! I've been remking my models from scratch each time but now I can do entire groups of models in seconds :O

I have been pulling my hair out when it comes to resizing. This video has enlightened me!
~thank you for sharing
Great! However, this seems to also resize the perpendicular lines, which is not what I want. How do you fix this?
do you use a special plugin to make this possible? Im doing the same exact thing in my sketchup and its not working
i've tried it and it requires no plugin

I'll use this in my new creation, because i'm pretty sure, that the scale-tool has no snap for 1/3 of previous size.
I've been looking for this for so long! Thanks a lot!!

does this only work on pro? I'm only getting a resized guide.

Thanks, i watched another video on UA-cam that did not help me, but your video was exactly what i needed and this method is perfectly working.

For everyone having a problem, just remember to firstly choose the whole object, EXPLODE and then resize
I am not able to see the measurement tool at my sketchup pro 2018 ! What should i do please?
WHat if I want to scale only one side of the shape? let say the width and leave the length and the depth in original?
when scaling use the center grip on the side you'd like to scale.
Use the "SCALE Tool" not the resize with tape.
very helpful and straightforward man, good job and thanks
I have been trying to find a way of resizing like this for soooo long! Thank you!
subbed for the Khalid line. nice. to find some humour in a sketchup tutorial

I had this problem too. Realised you have to measure from one corner to another corner along the edge of the object, not from 1 side to another.
