My Guitar Practice Routine - How I Quickly Improved My Guitar Playing!

- The long awaited video of the little exercises and bits I do to get better at playing guitar!! These exercises have really helped me improve my technique and harmony knowledge and maybe it can help you too (that's why I shared them lol) anyway thank you for watching:)))
Check out my jewellery: mriyatheory.com
Links to my social media and stuff: linktr.ee/mang...
and as always, thank you so much for watching,
Mango
Here's an outline and some further details for newcomers:
Note: If you don't know how to read music, if you don't know basic scales, arpeggios, modes then this won't make sense to you at all
1. 0:35 Note Finding. Find all the notes across the board
2. 1:05 A minor scale (aeolian) in 6 permutations and play styles.
If youre familiar with the a minor scale that's basically it. Instead of playing the notes in the same order rearrange the order but don't change the note you start and end on.
Play in a different style each time. Legato is a guitar playing technique where we try to keep our fingers on the strings as much as possible.
Alternate picking: this is huge and many guirarists (especially me) are used to mainly downpicks. With alternate you want to pick up, pick down as much as possible
3. 3:00 you want to take the technique used for A minor and switch it to C Major
4: G Major scale, you'll want to play this descending order going down the fretboard
5. 4:30 A Minor sweep picking. Sweep picking, sweep picking when you're aiming to pick more than one note quickly as you're playing. In this case its downpick, basically, instead of picking one note at a time you're going for as many as you can
6. 5:20 palm muting picking excersize for 3 minutes anywhere on the guitar, basically just try to perfect your picking in this excersize
7. After this you'll practice playing whatever you want, Mango then goes over stuff she's experimenting with however you'll probably at this point want to come up with your own licks
I hope I helped make this clearer for some people
I love you. Thank you so much.
I'm not sure your explanation of sweep picking is correct. I believe sweep picking is when you pick smoothly from one string to the next, almost like a strum, and hammer on or pull off any additional notes being played along the way. So you might start on the G-string somewhere, play a note (call it the root), then hammer on a minor third then playing the fifth on the B-string below, then a minor seventh hammering on to the root again on the E-string below, all with one smooth downward motion of the pick.
Some people say learning scales, chords, and theory hurt their music. IMO, the most important thing about learning it is that it helps you communicate with other musicians. If you say "This is in the key of A" or "This is an Asus4 chord", it really helps get your ideas across. That's not the only thing useful about learning music, but it's one of the major reasons IMO.
THANK YOU
@@brushstroke3733 probably im not that well versed in music theory or technique so youre probably right
I’ve been a musician for 15 years. My practice has almost never been structured to this extent. Your advice is helpful to all types of levels! Great work!
Im a beginner so I got no clue what you just said 😭 none the less good video 👍🏽
oh what’s not clear? and thank you!!
You have to learn music fundamentals, scales, major/minor chords, where the notes on the fretboard are, styles of playing.
This video is more geared towards people with a background in music theory, if you plan on playing by ear I'd suggest looking up the spider technique. However. You're not going to go as far without theory
@@MangoGuitar as a beginner I didn't know all the terms ( still learning) and when I was taking a online course... I found out that I knew more than I thought. And Metrodome is key .. I will have to work on that.
@@MangoGuitar your technique us all over the place. poor economy of motion. need to slow down and do it for more than 2 minutes.
If you haven’t yet I suggest Yousician it’s great for getting you from beginner to intermediate
• 5 minutes: note finding 0:44
• A minor variations 6 permutations of this A minor scale (legato and other day alternate picking) 1:39
• C major legato 3:11
• G major legato going through the hole fretboard 4:02
• A minor picking exercise (?) - A minor scale through the hole fretboard 4:28
• Palm mute 5:09
• Break time playing whatever u want for 30 min🤝5:40
Nice video. It's interesting to see how other people practice. I don't think I've seen one before.
One tip. I notice you run through a whole succession of techniques (maybe it was just to show us). If you want to perfect a technique, stick to one thing and repeat the same pattern for 10 minutes. You should notice a distinct improvement over the 10 minutes. Keep doing this for some days, the improvement will also feed into other patterns that you haven't even been practicing.
The sweep picking scales and arpeggios are a great tip. I've just been using the modes recently to practice playing in a key around the guitar while using the trick to find the root notes. I only would just play songs b4 so this is all very helpful.
You make it very clear, that practicing is actually fun... and meditation. It is good for you. Keep doing what you are doing, and concentrate on making perfect movements at slower tempos.😊 Your ear will catch up in time.
yes! thinking of it as a meditation has made it more fun and easier to be consistent with it
I like your channel especially witnessing your journey as your gain fluency and expertise on your exploration of the guitar. It is a tremendous showcase for all young students wishing to learn the guitar and would wholeheartedly recommend your channel too anyone at the fundamental stage. Your honesty detailing your progress is perhaps the most wholesomely gratifying thing about your channel and I wish you every success. I look forward to watching more .....
Love that clean Fender sound
1. 5 min: note finding
2. a minor variations (legato, alt picking)
3. g major legato
4. arpeggios
Thanks for the routines! They are refreshing.
One thing that struck me while watching you play is that the fretting pinky and middle finger are doing a lot of work. There's sympathetic tension going on when fretting the index and ring finger. This makes the middle and ring finger bridge a longer distance than necessary when it's their turn to fret. It doesn't happen as much on the low strings as it does on the high ones.
Hope you don't mind me pointing this out.
Thanks again and good luck!
"what I do to get this good..." nice and humble...lols
aeolian is not a scale, it's a mode. a mode can be only applied to a melody or a harmony-less music piece
That's a really nice strat. Love the finish.
Thank you ! Wonderful wisdom !
Excellent lesson. ❤ Thanks
This is a very good routine, must be practiced in accordance with the Law.
Can you share the tabs for those excellent exercices?
Awesome. Thanks
Keep at it you already sound great!
It's all about the fundamentals, after all!
The only things you really need are speed, dexterity, and just a little bit of theory!
A very robust routine! Great job!
Long live Ukraine!
your bends are fantastic
Thanks for this video and share your routine ❤
It's funny - I am hearing parts of different pieces while you were doing these exercises: Koyaanisqatsi, a tune by Brand X, etc. It's not just random notes.
Soy un eterno principiante así que no entiendo mucho . Me encanta cómo tienes todo tan ordenadamente xdd
PD: amo tus videos
muchas gracias!!!
Ey! Alguien que también habla español :3
Any suggestions on where to learn chords?
The only think make sure u use the Metrome like u do .
Hi, I'm curious about your recording setup. I see a Scarlett Solo I think but it looks like you're using the mic input not the jack? Is it a mic in front of a real amp or are you going straight to Logic?
Really good. Cheers!
Hi great video. I like the Jazz improv at the end sounds great. I am intrigued to know what setup you have, what software do you use on your computer to get your sounds? And what speakers do you have for play back? Thanks a lot 😊
Thats the fender player strat?
Very effective!
Plz play the scale note with diagram so that can play
Beautiful ❤
Finally spilling the beans
Did you use a pedal ?
4:15 i tend to do that too when I reach 1st string 😂
I always play at night I’m lucky to have a close school near me
good one thanks
What? We have to know ALL the notes on the fretboard???
ideally yes haha to be able to easily navigate your way through it :)
I know this is late but theres only like 12 notes lol
ua-cam.com/video/Vkzy2ENUljk/v-deo.htmlsi=UD2qZtf0967Pou8G
This video helped me with a trick to find the same note on the high/low E string on the rest of the strings
@@OlivesRCew1on the musical alphabet. Now do that for every string. Now you have 72 notes (1st octave), there's even more but they just repeat.
72 notes first octave? wtf xDD an octave contains 12 notes, the guitar has a bit less than 4 octaves, that leaves you with around 48 notes.
what is the sequence of chords at the end?
Nice ❤
How long have you been playing guitar?
Hey..if I purchase your course would you teach me these things which you are playing in this video like amj7 in chords and on tabs both
I am not able to find them on my own
Kindly let me know your course rates
I am not able to find it on
picking is really a nightmare 😂
im also working on it now.
Have you tried finger picking yet, keeping a rhythm with the thumb while playing melody with your other fingers? Get picking down first, but then see if you can learn to fingerpick like old school blues (Robert Johnson might be a good place to start.)
If I had a chance to play I would take it but travel like my teacher maybe not buy my self
gentille fille, merci bien!
Hi girl!
tell me why I watched this entire video pretending to understand any of it (im clearly at more of a beginner level than I thought)
Just out of interest do you attend music school or do you have a tutor?
Along with wishing you a speedy and meaningful climb up the guitar's ladder of experience I'd like to make a suggestion for your video. I would suggest that you actually do the practice session. What I saw was actually a rather sloppy approach to teaching and playing. Loosen up first, them warm-up, then as methodically as possible do the complete practice. Thank you and good luck in your studies.
I’m from Houston
the into made me laugh my ass off, Guitar has fucked up my english now instead if I stutter I'm like fuck it foce it out like the guitar how your day that good
Promo>SM 🤤
No need to be excusing yourself for the exercises you're showing. They're definately not boring if you like music.
Erm, basically, thing... yeah, I'm turning off
This very clearly shows me that my practice routine was garbage, because I made no progress after 6 years. It’s because of this that I’ve given up trying. I don’t see the point in continuing to fail
Don't give up. You're probably better than you think. What are you trying to learn? Do you learn riffs and chords of songs you like, either by tab, or by video explanation, or by ear? Are you interested in understanding music theory at all? Theory unlocks the guitar and all instruments and makes playing much more fun for some people, myself included. I like playing blues/rock leads, but I like playing old cowboy chord country songs just as much. Don't miss out on rhythm guitar playing (hint: its not just power chords and barre chords) - that's where some of the most fun is.
@@brushstroke3733 I was trying to play the songs I wanted to play by using tab. I tried learning to read musical notation, but wasn’t getting anywhere with that either. Limited understanding of theory, only did it to help with the basic playing that I wanted to do. At the end of the day, the guitar was making me angry and frustrated, because I still can’t do the basic things one needs to do to be able to play the simple songs I want to play, and I wasn’t seeing any improvement despite daily practice and weekly lessons. I don’t need that kind of anger and frustration in my life. The funny thing is that every so often I consider giving it another try, but I ultimately don’t, because I have no faith in my ability to actually get better. It doesn’t help that the people I’ve identified as good teachers aren’t interested in working with me. They usually just get mad and tell me I’m not teachable after I say that the same crap they’re telling me to do still isn’t working. So why should I try again?
@@markantonelli53 No, I think you might be better off letting it go. If you don't have faith you can do it, you'll prove yourself right. Most of life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Either your subconsious or the universe is responding to your beliefs and mirroring what you believe.
I'm not sure which for sure, but that's how it seems to me. Somewhere along the way, you got the idea that learning or playing guitar was difficult for you, and it will be as long as you think and believe that.
Good luck in whatever you choose to pursue and believe in yourself. Or believe in something greater than yourself.
The great songwriters will mostly tell you they don't write the songs - the songs just come to them, often quickly and easily. Usually ths songs they struggle with and work hard on don't amount to much, but the songs that just come through in fifteen minutes without a second thought are their most popular.
@@brushstroke3733 also, I find it interesting that you responded to me like you did. Why so many questions when you likely won’t help me?
@@brushstroke3733 I only got the idea that learning to play the guitar was difficult for me after never seeing any progress after 6 years of trying. If I knew what the right approach to learning the guitar was, I would have done that, and I would have gotten better. But I don’t know what that approach is, which is why I had the experience that I had. Since nobody will help me figure that out, what else am I supposed to do?
Where do you stay I want to go out with you
i dont believe in practice routines, if u go see my guitar playing videos u can tell i suck bad especially at giant steps! haha i m very baaaaaad! hahahhahahahahahahahah....
Haha. No.. haha . No.. haha.. no..
Stop playing methodically and play from your heart n spirit! 😭
You're super sweet and beautiful too. Thanks for the tips ❤.
🥱🥱🥱
If there's no context or GOAL!
Is just boring
It's cool to see people doing similar exercises. The note finding has been so useful, I can't believe it took me so long to incorporate it.
legit I always tell myself I need to REMEMBER all my notes but have never done this.
I recently changed my note finding to not looking at the fretboard. I thought this would be really hard. It accelerates the memorizing process. Five minutes a day. Try it!
Excellent. I'm 10X your age, but am inspired to use you routine. Starting to play again after a short break of 40 years. Thanks!
her probably > 20yo so you are > 200yo?
hence the short 40 year break lol
@Delgalar the dude is a vampire
@@mikementzer1622 either that or the guy thinks she's 8.
Okay this actually rules. I'm mad yoinkin some of these to add to my own.
Also as an additional tip that doesn't involve the guitar but will massively improve your playing/longevity; do an extensive tendon stretch routine on both hands before sitting down for a session. Your fingers will not only feel 10x faster and smoother your tendons will strengthen and loosen making playing easier for longer.
I suggest looking up guitarists to learn proper stretches and just doing them before every practice/jam session
do you speak like this in person?
let me know how you get on with these :)
Being self-taught, studying is sometimes what I do the least, I think I need a little more discipline 😅
@Hitomi I definitely agree with you on EVERYTHING.
The issue in my case, being self-taught is not something I chose, what happens is that I have no other option. I can't afford to pay for music classes or things like that for reasons of resources.
So yes, I agree that what I can do on my own is very limited, but it's all I have. Trust me, I don't expect to get far with this, especially with all those limitations, I can never have the level of someone who studies music seriously, but I enjoy it, and I do what I can. If I had the opportunity to enter music more formally, I would.
@@arianatorbutera9152 you can get far self-taught. Eric clapton and Jimi Hendrix are also self-taught
Great video! You need to practice the basics on everything if you want to get better. Today’s microwave generation want everything immediately. Keep it up kid!
How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb? 8... 1 to change the light bulb and 7 to watch and say... " that was pretty good, but I could've done it better". 😂😂🤣🤣
I just stumbled upon this video and it reminds me of when I saw someone else starting out years ago. I'm hoping you'll progress as well and I get to see it as you do. Thank you for sharing your learning journey with us. Liked and subscribed.
just when i was listening to my parents saying to drop the guitar during my exams for a while, i get this notification 💀
but its a good motivational boost! I'll be sure to check this whole out when i get done with other stuff >:)
Hi, I remember you saying you’re from Ukraine once
Are you ok?
Thank you so much for sharing some of your routine! I stumbled upon your channel, watched a bunch of videos, and subscribed! 😀 Your progress / improvement is really impressive. I'm new to guitar and I plan to start with finger exercises to improve strength and dexterity (variations of spider walks). The note finding is something I had not seen before, but makes complete sense so I'm excited to start that too. Do you have any recommendations on videos, books / resources etc that you used or found helpful over the years?
So I am an acoustic beginner and still understood most of your video coz I watch a lot of guitar reactions in which they analyse on how they played so yeah once u know the terms like legato, arpeggios, etc then this video is self explanatory so yeah great video👍
Lol I read “So I am an autistic beginner…” and I was like, same 😮
Thanks for this video, practicing is such a great habit! You’re awesome for sharing this!
Even to a seasoned guitar player, these routines are still useful 👌🏼 subscribed 👌🏼
I wish I have more time for practice
I feel like I’m stuck
This is " your practice routine" which obviously works good for you!
As a guitar player, you must find what works for you, and it evolves and changes.
Guitar is a personal journey for a life time of enjoyment.
So I find many comments very silly, because they seem upset, your not doing it ,their, way.
Just how stupid is that?
Good video,Im happy you took the time to give your fans a back stage view of your playing guitar.
Nobody ,just plays guitar, Hendrix,Stevie ray vaughan, practiced, practiced and practiced.
Maybe I can play and get better together
Your awkwardness is funny😂
Step 1...be young and have lots of free time to play
Or be old and persistent. If you work on things you're not already good at every day, even just 5 - 15 minutes every day, you will improve and get good. If you're "old", you already know 5 - 10 years goes by in the blink of an eye. If you work consistently, you'll be much better in ten years than if you don't even try because you think you don't have time.
@@brushstroke3733 I take 5 min to eat at work, and the rest to practice in my car... I have a strandberg, and they are really light and small, so it's easy to do that in the car.
Hard cope. You have free time at some point in your life. What you use it on is up to you. I didn't start learning guitar until my adult life and no, you don't have much time, especially with a family. But there is some and you find excuses to get an hour of practice in a day. I hope you have been playing this whole time. Shouldn't dig at other people because you are unhappy with progress. Yes it's easier for people still living with mom and dad, but you were that age once too.
It is later now. Thank you for the note-finding exercise.
hey manga ive been watching you play guitar for awhile now, your onr of my insprations when it comes yo guitar i got my guitar abt a year ago now and never quit bc i saw how you had gotten
Self taught for like 7plus years so naturally im ready for a routine
Very good
If you don't mind Mam it'will better to give the notes so that we can play ..
I've actually just diacovered note finding on my own. Amazing to know that you are doing this too. Thank you for sharing.
ı really wanna know the chords you were playing at the last
Could you write it down all your practice routine for us to follow please?
Top tip to learn the note positions on the fretboard. I wish I had been told this 40 years ago. It makes life easy almost immediately.
I’ll try this tonight and get back to you all
How do you prefer to practice with or without sound?
with!!
You're doing it right. I am quite sure that you'll be a great guitar player. Keep it up. Cheers !
do you play on acoustic? or is ur weapon of choice electric?
Who else is glad they are bald
That's that's that's...
What guitar do you have?
thanks Mango
I do have a cheep electric guitar but it’s fun for me to play it’s a bit smoother than the acoustic
If you can, make sure your guitars are set up well. Setting the neck almost straight (if you don't have any high frets) and lowering the string height can help immensely. Also, the string height at the nut is very important, as is intonation. All of these are fairly easy to do yourself on an electric guitar. Intonation on an acoustic is not so easy to fix if it's off, but it might just require swapping out the bridge (and sanding it down to the right height.)
Next?
ok
Great video for experienced guitarists, I try very hard to practice a routine like this and it is very productive. 👍🏼
