My first grade teacher in 1979 had us write a couple of sentences about anything at the beginning of the school year. She said she'd give them back our senior year. No lie, she showed up to each student's high school graduation party (1991) and presented THAT PAPER to us with a copy of The Giving Tree. I still have it!

That’s so sweet. When I started Spanish, my teacher has us do that with as much as we could. At the end of Spanish, she presented us with those papers for comparisons. It was hilarious.

My 7th grade history teacher saved me from suicide. Just a person that saw a kid and actually talked to her, like a person with a brain and feelings. I wrote him a letter senior year about what he did for me and his kindness. Needless to say a few tears were shed. Keep believing in kids, they need you! 💜

The last story that Rebecca told reminds me of a teacher experience I had when I was in 4th grade, but sadly, in the opposite way. My 4th grade teacher asked me a question… I can no longer remember the question, or even what subject we were studying, but I answered it incorrectly. His response was to tell me in front of the whole class, “It is better to remain silent & believed to be a fool, then to open your mouth & remove all doubt.” I was so mortified by this, I still hesitate to answer questions in group settings, even if I’m fairly sure I know the answer. It took me years to realize that teacher was extremely inappropriate in his “teaching method”.

Im so sorry, that would have been crushing. Personally, I'm the exact opposite. Especially in university, most profs never say anything rude about people asking questions, and more often than not they just want someone to participate. I'd often answer incorrectly, but profs are still happy that you're trying. I hope you're able to resolve that a bit and get more of your voice back.

That’s such a counterproductive and cruel thing to tell a kid. My literal college professors hear some ridiculous answers, but they just correct or say something like “not quite” and ask if anyone else wants to answer. If adults in college are allowed to give a goofy answer because they’re still processing information, or are completely out of their depth of knowledge so they just aren’t on the right train of thought yet, then little kids should be given grace and space to mess up without being degraded.
I’m so sorry that happened and hope you’ll be able to find comfort in expressing thoughts publicly one day. It’s helpful to the group to have peers give answers in their own words, and it also helps when a peer makes a mistake (usually one other people would have made as well) and learn from it with them.

My sons third grade teacher had the kids write a letter to their graduating self. She had them include things that were currently going on in their life, etc. A couple weeks after he graduated high school last year, he received that letter in the mail. His teacher told me that she has done this project for over 30 years now in her English class when they learn the parts of a letter, etc. I think it is so cool.

I was going through a terrible time in high school and I remember having a teacher who did little awards for the students and I knew I wasn’t getting anything, so I was just doodling in my notebook and then she said my name. I was so surprised I had to ask her again what it was for and she said “Most Improved” and I had to ask what grade I had because I had a D and she just cheered that I currently had an 89% and blew a popper. She was so happy with me because she knew how much I had been struggling and working to do better despite believing that I likely wasn’t going to pass that that memory will never leave me 💙 Miss A was an incredible teacher!

what teachers say to you can have such a long impact!! this is a personal story but i have a little note card on my fridge from 5th grade (12ish years ago), my teacher sat me down after class (i believe she knew i did not have a good life at home and i was also being bullied in school) and asked me five things i could remind myself everyday, some of the things were simple like “i have pretty eyes” but i think the biggest ones that stick out to me now are “i’m better than what others think of me” and “i’m worthwhile”, i’m 22 now and it might be silly but i get a little teary eyed sometimes when i see that card on my fridge, she was one of the first people i thought truly ever believed in me, and i think i needed to share that, she had no obligation to do that and she’s probably forgotten about me, but that one moment made such a big impact on me, one she probably didn’t even realize, even today there are days where i need to remind myself of those things, she was so caring and nice to every student, i don’t think she ever didn’t have a smile on her face and i know that had to be so hard to do when you have a personal life outside of school, she always made me feel included when other kids would leave me out, for all of that i will always be grateful for her!!

This year, one of my past teachers quit teaching. She was my favorite teacher of all time, and I'll miss her to death. That homeroom was off the chain, we got along like siblings, and had so many inside jokes. She doesn't know it, but there was one kid who was the most wild that year. If she saw how much he improved by a couple words she told him a couple years back, I think she'd be the most proud you can be of a kid. Can't wait to eventually see you again, another time, Ms. Morris. Her class changed me the most.

My favorite teacher left my school this year, and I was especially upset because it was just out of the blue. Like I literally went to his classroom to tell him about something that happened over the summer and then he just wasn't there. I was so upset. He taught English (to high schoolers) Spanish, and coding, as well as leading the robotics club. He would start whole-class discussions about stuff we were interested about, and would manage to still teach the lesson while having a seemingly unrelated conversation with us. He talked to me about niche books/authors that I read, and gifted me a book from one of those authors, and it was specifically one I hadn't read yet. Mr. Cosby, if you happen to read this you were one of the best teachers I've ever had and I miss you a lot.

I couldn't stop the crying. I dealt with so much crap that semester, barely scraped by, but I'm pretty sure that teacher passed me the way she did because she saw the stress I was under. She was so kind to me, she barely spoke to me 😬 but her kindness had no words, she alone taught me so much silent grace. Sometimes angels move in 🤐 silence.

I was in 5th grade when 9/11 happened. To this day I have never forgotten how she handled that situation and how she treated us. She felt we deserved to know what happened and then proceeded to build her curriculum of the day around it and what we were feeling. She was also the first teacher to notice some of my defaults and where I was lacking. She went out of her way with every student to help us improve on our downfalls so they were no longer downfalls. But I also had many other teachers throughout my academic years that made an impact from elementary to college. They have each stuck with me.

I’m over hear crying over some kid I don’t even knows name gaining so much in one year 😭❤️🙌🏻 And teachers do make such a difference. My daughter is ending her 5th grade year, and it’s been a really really complicated year. Her teacher creating a comfortable environment she doesn’t want to miss out on, and it has been a 180 from when she was in 1st grade and would get physically ill with anxiety over school. Our schools 5th grade also lost a student to taking his own life, so it can’t be stressed enough how important it is for them to have good environments at school, and everywhere else.

The baby of our family graduated high school this week with honors. The day of his honor cord ceremony each student was allowed to pick the peer that really touched their heart and put the cord on them. My brother chose a teacher that has dealt with horrible bullying from students ever since my oldest brother attended the high school (2008 grad). This teacher had finally left the school 2 years ago and the school had to reach out and tell him my brother chose him to place the chord on him that day because he was his role model. I just know that the teacher had to think that all the hell he went through was absolutely worth it in the end. I definitely cried, so yes sometimes kids are horrible but years later they will truly appreciate the lessons you gave them. And we thank you 🙏🏼

My teacher read alwtw to us, and for some chapters she'd hook her phone up to a speaker and walk around the school/outside with it playing while we read along. She even took us outside and when the characters got to have honey, she pulled a thing of honey out of her bag and poured a little honey on the hands of people who wanted it and let us have honey (it was the first time I'd ever had honey before). Those small details made the book so much more enjoyable and fun, thanks for bringing back that memory!

That statement about kids growing up and looking back at their teachers and classes differently is so true! I remember I had a teacher i hated in 6th grade, I remember being so angry that she made me go to her room for lunch to work on make-up assignments, that I would steal random little things from her class when she wasn't in the room. Looking back I realize I was being a little turd and that she just wanted me to get my grades up.
But one thing that will always stick with me is how when I was failing most of my classes at the end of middle school because I didn't care, my band instructors tried so hard to motivate me to do better, and it was the only time any of my teachers had a sort of heart to heart talk with me and kept on pushing me to do better. I somehow managed to turn my grades around and really grind, and later I found out that those same teachers would tell other struggling students my story as a way to motivate them, and they weren't afraid to tell me they were proud of me. I'll always carry those memories with me ❤

Something I love that my teachers did with the students at the end of the school year was that they gave us fun project activities to do or movies and they would do mini parties with us as well as let outside for the whole day but my favorite thing they done was make tiktoks with us and if we saw someone cute they would become like a best friend to us like they would hype us up about them. At the same time they would also help the students that weren’t doing well so that they could graduate. I have so much respect for teachers and y’all podcast gives me another pov of my teachers and I love listening to y’all podcast. Love y’all 💖💖💖

My history teacher from last year made such an impact on my life. I’m extremely traumatized from events involving men in my life, and he was genuinely the first positive male role-model in my entire life. I miss him so much this year.

I'm dyslexic and was told by multiple teachers - who were horrible and made me hate school "You'll never amount to anything" but now here I am at the age of 30 starting university in October to do an education course to become a primary school teacher (elementary school). I wouldn't be doing it without the encouragement from some other teachers in my current job as a Learning Assistant (the Scottish equivalent to a Teacher's Aid) who sat me down, like Lauran & Becca and said "you can do it".
I have only just found the pod cast and have binge it over the past couple of days 😂 can't wait for more!

In terms of read-alouds, during English last year we got both of our novels read too us (year 7) so I don’t think there is an age limit for teachers reading to their students. I love this podcast so much, it gives me so much more respect for my teachers (I am a respectful student though).

My 6th grade English teacher had us write letters to our future selves, and when we graduated from high school he mailed them to us. It was so cute to read about my dog who was a puppy at that point and when I got the letter she was a senior dog.

During the last couple of weeks of school, my science teacher had to have her room all pack and moved out by the last day of school. So in the morning we have a half an hour called paws where we either get called in by a teacher to get caught up in school work or have fun before school starts. My science teacher took this time to have my class (first period) help pack, move things to other classes or the dumpster if needed, etc.
And we loved doing that. Especially since that classroom hadn't been cleaned out since the science teacher before her I believe, so about 25 year. She even let us take a few nick-nacks that she didn't want.

At the end of fourth grade (first year of quarantine so it was online) we read Number The Stars. And then at the end of sixth grade my social studies teacher read us “A long walk to water” and our class would literally BEG our teacher to read another chapter.

With what y’all were talking about towards the end, I think about it as a seed being planted. You planted a seed and you don’t get to see it grow to maturity, but you planted it and gave it that opportunity to start the growing process. Sometimes the seed is slow to start growing or very stubborn, but it gets there eventually.

Talking about book studies, the best book that I ever read for school had to be the outsiders. I think that might be one of the only books that I fully read and didn’t just look up cliff notes because I couldn’t put it down.

I love it when my English teacher does the movie adaptation of the book we're reading!! We actually did it twice this year. Our first one was an Anne Frank play that we read, and the movie was an older black and white movie. The the second time was for a book called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor.
