  • Haleakalā is a shield volcano located on Maui. The word Haleakalā means “the house of the sun” and comes from an ancient Polynesian legend. According to the legend, the sun god, Lā, controlled the days and nights. Demigod, Maui, was not a fan of the shorter days as he needed more light to get his chores done. One night, Maui climbed to the top of Haleakalā, lassoed Lā, and tied him to a tree. Lā, wanting to be released, and Maui, wanting more sunlight, came to an aggreement. Maui let Lā go and the Hawaiian Islands received more sunlight.
