- Michael Gove has suggested Liz Truss and the Government are "betting too much on tax cuts" funded through borrowing as he called for the decision to scrap the 45p top rate of income tax to be reversed.
The former Cabinet minister said that "my concern is the scale of that borrowing" which is being used to pay for the tax cuts.
Speaking at a Chopper's Politics podcast event hosted by The Telegraph at Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, Mr Gove said that he was worried the Government was "betting too much on tax cuts when we are borrowing to pay for them" and "that is not Conservative in my view".

But she’s not inept, that’s the point. She has done exactly what she wanted to do here and her friends and backers are profiting greatly from it. To call her stupid is to underestimate her and take away from how sinister it is.
@@jaybee4288 Agree. However, the good fortune Truss had is the fact she got the PM's job without campaining for an election based on such a weird manifesto. I think broadcaster Nick Abbot is right. He calls it a "right wing coup". The consensus is she would never get in power if she went to the country on a manifesto like that. Many of the things she wants to do was not in the 2019 manifesto.

Undoubtedly. Unfortunately the telegraph cease to be a critical newspaper a long time ago. Its lost its way and lost some of its best writers. Not a Tory but I use to read this paper to get a healthy opinion from the other side. Not these days, the swirly eye loons like reporters are just a mouthpiece for the Tory party instead of putting forward an argument conservationism as an alternative. This feels like 1997 and the last days of Major's government.

If any Tory MP loses the whip for voting against the mini-Budget , it will be an absolute disgrace and show what a mess this country's method of government is wrong. An MP should be free to vote according to what they believe is right. I pray that the mini- budget is voted down, followed by a no-confidence motion in Truss.
Enough Tories would have to vote against Liz Truss in a confidence vote. That would involve them putting the country, ahead of their party and themselves. Which seems unlikely. The conservative party has slowly (and ocassionally quickly) been gutted of any principled politicians they once had. It's only careerist, arrogant incompetents left.
At this point, nothing would surprise me. Truss even tried BLATANTLY LYING to us all by pretending she didn’t know what her chancellor was about to put into his budget! She’s claiming appalling incompetence as an excuse, fooling precisely no one, committing the country to a heist of profits, certain in the knowledge that she and her party are going to have the whip taken from them forever, by the electorate, in less than two years from now! This is a Britain’s Closing Down Sale, from which, “Everything Must Go!” because the party big whigs are looking to their pensions, gongs and retirement plans and don’t care if we finish up looking like Ukraine by the end of it! All dressed up to look like Thatcherism and, “trickle down,” economics. We’re doomed unless we see more U turns, which we’ve been lead to expect anyway, so . . . watch this space. If she isn’t booed from the podium, she can count that as a success.

Truss has been in the PM role less than a month, and she has completely f*****d up and cost the BOE £65bn! She and KK are totally incompetent. I cannot vote for her, my confidence in her leadership is completely destroyed.
The BOE will sell those bonds back to the government for a large profit and give out massive bonuses to their top guys and it will cost the tax payers. That is why they removed the ban on bonuses.
Gilts are returning 4.17% on a 2 year bond so the BOE can hold their £65 billion for 2 years and make a £2.6 billion return guaranteed by the tax payers and no doubt Lizz Truss and Quasi has an offshore corporation who will receive their cut of the proceeds.

Starmer was accused of too many soundbites and not enough substance? I watched his speech the other week and I never heard that. There was quite a lot of substance there, like:
- The assurance that their manifesto would be fully budgeted
- That Labour was completely ruling out a coalition with the SNP
- The target to raise home ownership levels to 70% by targeting the actual supply issue - 'shovels in the ground'
- Their aim at increasing the number of NHS nurses - this was admittedly a bit vague, but it sounds like they're planning to introduce alternative routes in that don't require a university degree
-Reinstating the top tax bracket, but keep the 1% cut on the bottom rate (admittedly at this point, no longer relevant).
Can we call lobbying what it is, bribery.
