  • What does it mean to be deaf in a hearing society?
We enter the often misunderstood world of the deaf community through the eyes of 4 individuals - a 4-year-old boy embarking on ear surgery, a teenage athlete, a young dancer and an accomplished pianist take us through the paces of their lives.
This Is What I Hear is a quiet study of their everyday lives and struggles, as well as their triumphs and observations. The episodes are accompanied by a special soundscape to draw us closer into their world, and to appreciate what it is that they really hear.

If a child is eligible for Cochlear implants, then it's not okay to let him/her be completely deaf. Quote from Helen Keller, "Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people.”

Cochlear implants have given the hearing impaired the chance to lead almost normal lives. They are no longer destined to a life of silence and sign language. I don’t know what Shaun meant when he said that it is a perfectly respectable choice to be deaf. He chose a cochlear implant for his son so that he would not have to lead a silent life.

With cochlear implants, some of them still have to live with far from perfect speech and hearing. They may still not be able to "fit in" with the hearing world well.

@Nicola Chan Pang meant that they don't restore perfect hearing, only to some extent comprehensible.
