Thanks for the wideo guide. I had never fixed any VCR in my life, but thanks to you I just fixed my Sony VO-5360 U-Matic and cant eaven tell you the feeling I got to success such a task :)
Thanks for the video! It gave me the confidence to open up one of ours at our studio that wasn't feeding the tape after inserted. I think something was stuck. After manually moving components through their paces, it works great.
Hey there, very nice video! I got a Sony VP-5000 deck from work, wich was working fine, then all of a sudden, when I boot it on, the FastForward button lights up and the deck rolls on FF without a tape in it. Any idea what could be the issue?
Thank You for the video. We use a Sony V0-5600. Our department utilizes U-matic for "media preservation" for archival purposes from media received through donations. The deck is beginning to act poorly. I replaced the main drive belt, however it's still exhibiting symptoms, notably threading the tape and then sitting there doing nothing with the FWD light on.
Chris i service many 3/4 tape decks Here in the Arizona area as well as Betacam sp and many others! these decks need replacement parts and i have thousands of parts for these decks. it not a simple belt fix there is many alignment and setup to get these running like new. i would be happy to service these decks fro you if your in need of a videotech like me. contact me with your number videoscan1970@gmail.com
Rick Thomas Hi Rick, Thanks for the information and I'm going to keep this close by. By trade I'm an electronics technician, my title is A/V tech with the U.S. Army War College. Using your video, I'm going to investigate the issue a little further. Beyond that if it my minimal involvement doesn't rectify the issue, then I will be in contact with you to obtain service. Thanks again for the information and support!
HI - I was trained on Umatics by Sony back in 1985, but am a bit rusty. I have a VO 9850 SP, which struggles with threading / unthreading. I replaced that particular belt, the motor is turning, but I have to stick my finger on the threading ring and give it a push or two. Once it's all the way threaded, it will play a tape. I'm hoping to avoid a complete threading ring take down :( Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
question, i have a unit that is only playing the video in b&w, i have cords set properly but no color and the tapes are in color? any ideas on what it could be or what i can do thanks
hey, Rick, this is a fairly old video now so i hope you might still be able to help. I have a VO-5600 that is having trouble with audio. i can pipe sound through it and hear it fine through the machines headphone output, but upon playback it is distorted. I'm sure there could be a number of causes. The tape i'm using is Fuji NOS and hasn't been used until now.
ua-cam.com/video/pvF3NaDQ4zk/v-deo.html Check this video I think at 8:30 they show the audio heads. Your 5600 may be slightly different , not sure what model is in the video.
i have a few umatics in the shop waiting on belts too and a 5600 i own that i need to service soon, pretty sure my 5600 also will need belts and possibly few other things once i look at and also waitng on a video drum for a 9800 to arrive
How do you clean the video heads. Can you do a video on that subject for 5850 or any other model. Explain how to remove and change loading motor belt for 5850.
If you mean the tape does not thread but cassette goes down and tape pulls out partially?. Look at 6:34 on this video . What he calls "Loading motor" is not the actual motor it is out of sight. However the entire black plastic base with 2 white gears comes out by removing a couple of screws. Very easy to replace the belt one removed and reinstall the assembly. Clean and lubricate while there and check the gears for wear. They do wear out causing the tape to not thread
Hail, I have a Sony VO-2630. It's working just fine, and I was wondering if I could just oil all the belts and spindles and be able to get away with just that? Thanks!
Hi,Thank you for your comprehensive video guide.I have a u-matic tape that when I play on VO-5850 or VP-9000 it displays the time code on top and bottom of the TV screen, I've tried all the video outputs. Is there a way to play it without the timecode? Many Thanks
We have one of these decks. For some unknown reason, one day it just wouldn't power on? Checked the fuses that I could see/find but can't seem to figure out why it just won't power up? Any help would be much appreciated.
G'day mate, your video was very helpful, however I have a problem with my U-Matic V0-5600 and I was hoping you may have an answer. It has worked fine up until now, when I turn it on after a few seconds it starts fast forwarding and stopping again erratically (no tape inserted) and makes a lot of clicking noises as the parts near the fast forward spindle move. After watching your video I thought it may have been the sensors, but after cleaning them it made no difference. Do you know what could cause this?
Hello Thank You for Your Question! Yes i do know the problem The Machine needs to be serviced its not something you could do i do a complete service job on these machines i have all the tool used for setting up alignment belt Replacements Guide adjustment Electronic Repair. were you located i would happy to service for you contact me Rick videoscan1970@gmail.com
Hello, I have a player which I haven't used for about 8 months. I purchased a video which needed to be transferred and I am having problems. When I power up the unit, the FF button lights up and the rewind spindle runs for a couple seconds before stopping. When I try to load a tape the deck won't accept the tape at all. The player is the exact same model as you have in this video....any idea what is the problem and if it is an easy fix?
Hi there. I came across one of these machines in my attic. I no longer have a need for it . Would you be able to recommend someone / somewhere that would be interested in it? Thanks!
Open top cover look for a worm gear about 3/4 of the way back towards bottom. Rotate the worm gear and the turntable (AKA Loading ring) will begin to turn, unthreading tape. At 6:26 in this video he shows the worm gear referring to "Loading ring motor" but its not the motor its a gear.. The motor is out of sight at other end of belt. That belt may be broken or you have slop in the turntable (AKA Loading Ring) . If you have too much play in the turntable assemby if you can move it much front to back or side to side you need to adjust the guides on which it sits.
Thanks for the wideo guide. I had never fixed any VCR in my life, but thanks to you I just fixed my Sony VO-5360 U-Matic and cant eaven tell you the feeling I got to success such a task :)
Have the same model, and got it working after replacing the belts and tire, Thanks!

Very helpful, thank you. If you could show us how to swap out pinch rollers between machines, that'd be even better!
really love your videos we speak the same language and you are very easy to understand keep up the great work !

it depends if the tape has time code Recorded on it and no you cant. but you could block out with black using software.
