When I first discovered Dermot Kennedy, I was partially deaf caused by a medical issue. It was a scary time and it was made even scarier when I realised artists who I had been listening to for years weren't sounding the way they should. They weren't as rich nor as beautiful as they were when I first discovered them. When I left the hospital on the day my hearing returned to near perfection, I turned to Spotify and played something that Dermot Kennedy performed and my god, I nearly fell to the ground and wept. I had been listening to him for months and appreciating the few sounds I could still hear and yet I still fell in love with what I heard. But when I was able to hear every crack in his voice, every tremble, every last bit of texture that I had missed while I was hard of hearing I fell even deeper in love with a voice I hadn't even heard fully before. When I discover more and more of his music, I feel parts of the same feelings as I had on that day after leaving the hospital: sheer awe and appreciation for a voice whose capacity I still haven't heard. I'm reminded of the relief and joy I felt on that day and the gratitude that I could begin to love the musicians I had always loved, while making more room in my heart for new musicians like Dermot Kennedy. I'm glad he was the first musician I decided to listen to when I left the hospital. Because I don't think I could recreate the same feelings as I did with any other artist. Rarely does a musician craft lyrics so evocative and poignant as Dermot, and we are privileged to be living in the same era as him.
Michelle Murphy Hello Michelle. I just found your comment on his instagram and had to reach out to you. I am sure you know Bon Iver, but if you haven't listened to Heavenly Father before, the one he performed in the Sydney Opera House, then you should give it a try. It's really magical. The same goes for River by Leon Bridges, or Another Time by City of the Sun. And of course, I love your comment and Dermot Kennedy and so many other other artists. My biggest fear is to not being able to hear their beautiful music again. I am really happy for you that you got your hearing back. Discovering new music really is the best thing! Sending you lots of love from Switzerland, where Dermot's music also helps me getting through chemotherapy.
I've been listening to him for about 4/5 years now and I still, STILL, cant get over how good his songs are. His newer stuff is a bit less raw, and more charty, which is understandable, but this older stuff is just pure gold
I agree, the sound is a bit more pop now. But what I love is that the lyrical content hasn't changed. He's still making songs that mean something. Love it!
I'm clinging to the real deal...trust that this is just a phase, comes with the fame, but the Dermot we fell in love with will be back...and boy am I excited to hear what he has been bottling up
I’m just blown away every time I watch him sing. Artists like this don’t come around very often, if ever there has been someone like him, I’m so thankful to be around at the same time.
lyrics: You call arrows to fall short Because the snow is at our feet And when embraces subside, and the lilies have died It comes down to her tears on a sheet But it's alright because You cause lanterns to light And force demons disperse And if Lucifer may fear the swift drying of tears Then, for evil, you could not be worse But I see you now, yeah, I see you And release me now, kinda like dreams do And I see you now, was hard to see you Just don't forget to sing Remember everything And you're the only little girl I know who'd bring a kite in the snow Said, "You just gonna hold it up?" Said, "Nah, I'm gonna let it go" And when your heart hurts, days like today are the antidote If you think just maybe it's her Then promise me, young man, you're gonna let her know You won't go lonely, yeah You won't go lonely, yeah You won't go lonely, yeah You won't go lonely, yeah It'll all be better in the morning 'Cause while you sleep, I'll build a wall Pick a weapon up or something We're 'bout to have ourselves a brawl In dead of night, one window open He heard her singing down the hall Singing 'bout him, least he was hoping She left her listener enthralled, woo, ooh
Thank you! Also, this longer live version doesn't have the "you won't go lonely" part in it (I wish it did!), and I think it says "I call arrows to fall short....". It also has an extra verse at the beginning: "And I can only hope there'll be nothing wrong here in a little while and we'll tell jokes and run around for a little while 'till we go home where I'm so relaxed, my heart's a beat a mile and I can only hope it's not for nothing"
At the grand age of 50 something hearing Dermot singing brings a lot of clarity. He is a massive talent right up there with all the Greats. Pure class.
This is incredible... Watched this masterpiece twenty times in a row and still can't get enough. So much energy and creativity in there. Pure perfection. Thank you.
you've easily become one of my favourite artist. this song hits hard no matter how many times i've listened to it. keep going on doing you, it's amazing
i have no words left to say how i feel now after the first time i listened to this... i got shivers all over my body, tears running down from my eyes and... i stop here since words can not describe what i feel inside now after i heard something dat beautiful and magical... thank you
All these years later and still so much emotion is stirred in my soul every time I listen to your voice 🥰 can not wait for the 15th of may.. to see you live. I may just cry
Your best performance man, hands down...and I've seen and searched the ends of the internet for your stuff. When the instruments begin to overpower, you raise it another bar and overpower them with solid vocals and melody.
From time to time I come back to this song and remember the time when I used to listen to this regularly... now it's a distant memory like an old painting that lost some of it's colour but still conveys the same emotion... It's still the most beautiful description of love that I ever heard and after all this time I still shed a tear every time "But it's alright because, You cause lanterns to light. And force demons disperse. And if Lucifer may fear the swift drying of tears, Then, for evil, you could not be worse." I hope something along these lines will be last thing I think about when my time has come.
Dermot Kennedy's music makes me want to start writing songs again. His voice and music is so beautiful it speaks to my soul. He is on a whole other level.
There is a reason for this! At 05:03 there is a vocalisation that Dermot samples from Ben's "Black Flies", timestamp is at 05:36 for that vocalisation!
Been listening to Dermot for a couple years now and this is one of my favorites! Just brilliant... Don't forget to sing. Remember everything! You're the only little girl I know bring a kite in the snow. Said, "you just gonna hold it up?" Said, "nah, I'm gonna let it go"
First time I heard this song was two years ago, I had taken a trip to Ireland on a whim, rented a car & just started driving across the countryside. I turned up my Spotify just as I was coming into Dingle & this song came on. I had no idea you were Irish & yet there was something in the song that just suited the road I was on. I know this is cheesy to say, but I felt inspired by your music on my last minute adventure. Definitely was a trip for the books, a solo road trip to end off my 20’s. Thanks for the memories. xx
Its very difficult to choose one favorite of Dermot Kennedy's songs. But this here unfolds every section of my heart. Things I pine over, things I am terrified of, what I value most, etc. This song is unreal to me. Gorgeous
Absolutely beautiful song. The ambience of the room, the pianist playing the piano so elegantly and Dermots voice and guitar all just blend effortlessly. Incredible. Thank you so much.

This song has got me out of depression that i have suffered for years lost my father 2 years ago he fell down stairs at my family home he died 3 day after i suffered bad because it happened in front of me now i cycle my mountain bike every day putting up 20 to 30 miles. But i cant do it without dermot kennedys music fantastic 💪🙌
I remember being in London at my first music festival. I was trying to get over a girl and my friend kept pulling me around. He was more obsessed with trying to find some people he sort of knew in a crowd of thousands. We were stood on a patch of grass, I was over drinking so I could try and relax and remember to have fun and over in a nearby tent I heard this, a guy just sat playing and I paused. My friend was on his phon, texting his mates. I slowly wondered over and stood on the edge of the audience, a small crowd. After 2 minutes my friend came and said we should go towards the bar again. I looked in his eyes and said "I need to stay here man. This guy, I have to listen to him" he could see i was dead set on it. Afterwards, Dermot played 'Moments passed' and i dont know why, but I was just tearing up, visibly. My friend didn't notice, thankfully. I wanted this guy to become well known and hope ot bought him happiness, like the happiness and retreat he gave to me that day

Just listened to him perform this live. Honestly absolutely unbelievable. Had to come home and listen to all his songs again, so much raw talent it’s abit of a joke.

Dermot doesn't make music. He makes melancholy melodies for our hurting hearts
can't wait for this guy to get the credit he truly deserves
The time is here
he does now.
Saw him in Dallas. Sold out fast as hell.
He made it to Coachella last year. The time is now.
