I was asleep in my bed last year when the dayton tornados came through. After a 12 hour shift in the er I was pooped. Asleep by 8pm, tornados came through around 1130ish. TN has the highest number of recorded night time tornados than any other state in the US and yet so many homes and neighborhoods are built without basements or tornado shelters... how many people can fit into one bathtub or closet... and how many homes have a full bath on the first floor? So many lives were lost in this storm it’s absolutely worth considering storm safety shelters for communities that are most vulnerable. I realize this was out of the ordinary for middle TN and it may not be considered a “high risk” weather area... but it only takes one tornado...
I agree, they need more attention to this. I'm here in Oklahoma so we are known for killer tornados and most homes have them... It's unusual for a home here to not have a shelter or safe room or even public shelter. A few years back a large 🌪️ tornado hit Moore , Oklahoma during the middle of the day out of no where and hit a elementary school killing children there... Now most schools here in Oklahoma have shelters in the schools. Something for TN to think about for sure!!
