This is exactly what I needed to hear honestly. I always stop writing a story because I felt it was absolute garbage in every aspect. I know in the back of my mind I need to push through and actually have something to work with, but overcoming that mindset is a challenge unto itself.
But it is encouraging to hear these words, the story will suck but I'll have the chance to make it great once the first draft is done.
Thanks for sharing this advice 🙂👍

First I want to thank you, Christopher, Eragon was one of the reasons I started writing. When I bought your book I was 15. You encouraged me to write my own stories. Cause if a 15-year-old boy could write a book I also could, right? Not many people believed in me but I did because somewhere in the world was a boy as old as me who already had published a book successfully. That gave me hope to not give up. Eragon shaped me as a young author and gave me the strength to write on. Today I am 33 and managed to work on my novel 4-6 hours a day, after work. So I am very happy you had a great part in helping me to achieve this.
Second, this is a great tip. I work on my own novel series for 10 years now. I spend years and years on worldbuilding and character creating. When I started I wrote 120 pages in one month and then I stopped because the story wasn't really working. And I felt that. So I spent a lot of time trying to fix it. And today the story changed significantly. We must allow the story to change and grow like we change and grow as writers. Honestly, I thought my story was perfect at first but it wasn't. I stopped writing for a long time cause I was frustrated to not get it right the first time, to fail as an author. But not a long time ago I understood that this is not the way it works because you will never finish the first draft if you never write it.
This experience taught me that it doesn't matter how bad a chapter is the first time. You will go back and then you can fix it. This story is in my head for over ten years now and even in times when I thought I could never write it, there was a gentle voice in my head that said: Give yourself time to learn, don't give it up! Even my characters told me to not give up. So here I am, inhaling everything that I can possibly learn to become better at writing and make that book the amazing story my characters deserve.

Still one of my favorite authors. I wrote him a long time a go when I was a kid, and got a really cool response. I think I still have the letter. That said, I asked a lot of spoilery questions. That was before I really understood that authors can't just hand out that information. I appreciate your books, man. They helped me get through a tough time of foster care and served as an excellent gateway to the genre.

I am an engineer, almost towards the end of my PhD. We do face this problem in academic publishing where your guide/PI/college expects you to publish a certain number of papers every year. I will tell you this, most of the new research is either rejected or, if lucky, told to make revisions. Its very important to have an outline prepared before one writes the manuscript. One last thing, the writer also needs to be aware of where to stop. I might have written and reworded my masters thesis about 5 times before my PI literally yelled at me to stop wrting and turn the darn thing in. It doesn't have to be perfect. And just as Christopher says, the mistakes and the shortcomings of the work you turn in will help shape your next work. Great video Chris.

(You can find it on Amazon, by the way, at this link: www.amazon.com/dp/B086SDBMWN/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=To+Where+It+All+Began&qid=1586155573&s=books&sr=1-4 (please do check it out)) I just love your books like anything, and you're probably the reason I was able to achieve my dream. Kudos to you, ChrisP (I love that pun, by the way)!

I actually believed when I saw movies showing writers getting the sudden inspiration and then start obsessively writing away on paper or typewriters, and then showing that first draft to someone, and that reader would be like “this is incredible!” (Example: that movie on Mary Shelley writing Frankenstein). What a dent to my confidence when I started writing that I wasn’t that great

Basically don’t be hasty; don’t be overly self critical but don’t forget that there’s also always room for improvement and the moment you start thinking there isn’t perhaps another level to obtain, then you won’t try to obtain it and thus you’ll stay the same.

Wonderful advice (and the pun is fantastic--only critique is that it doesn't "read" well the way it's spelled. Maybe ChrisPi would work better?)
It goes along with my favorite writing advice, which has to do with writers block. "To avoid writer's block, don't be a writer. Be an editor. Write some garbage down and, instead of getting stuck, embrace it and treat it like you would another person's work. 'Instead of this, what they SHOULD have done is such-and-such'. Eventually you'll get something less bad, and you can take that and make it okay; and you can take that and make it pretty good, and from there, great."

  • @Rinne117

I absolutely love this series!!! Hearing your practical perspective on authorship is incredibly refreshing.
I also wanted to offer a small graphic design critique from a complete stranger and childhood fan, as the thumbnails are hitting my graphic design funny bone. On the off chance it’s in your creative blindspot, I thought it was worth a comment: the thumbnail art for your ChrisP series could be very much improved by capitalizing on your existing motifs of dragons, stars, maps, cobalt, sans serif Montserrat typefaces, that funky fantasy typeface from the Eragon covers, etc. - or just a screenshot of the video with its specific title on it maybe. I’m a marketing and graphic design person by day so I think it’d be super cool to see your stellar sage advice get the design treatment it deserves. Cheers!

I loved to write little books when I was seven years old. I always had little stories that I wanted to share.
Now I'm almost fifteen and completed reading The Inheritance Cycle and even the fifth book. I must say, the books really changed my life. I felt like a part of the story and while reading them my biggest fear was actually to complete reading the series. I was like "What am I supposed to do after I'm done reading?"
I've always loved dragons and I've had an idea for a couple of years of a story about a girl and a dragon.
I got inspiration from both your books and the Tomb Raider games. And a couple of weeks ago when I completed your fifth book I thought "why not begin with my own book? I've got my old map and the planning done already, I can just begin with it right now".
And thats what I'm doing, your words are really helping me, I needed this a lot, thank you!
(I'm from Sweden so If I a made grammar mistake I apologise, I'm still learning)

What he says here is so true, especially that your writing grows with you. There's a book I've been working on for about 10 years now (I started when I was 8) and the first draft was about 90% fart/poop jokes... In a fantasy novel. (Also, let's look at the fact that Eragon was almost about Kevin and his unicorns...) Moral: You WILL make questionable decisions in your first draft, and they WILL cause you to question yourself later. But that's everyone, so don't be too hard on yourself!

      @rorangarrowson5 4 роки тому +1

I agree! And it's important to acknowledge that too. I started writing my story 11 years ago, I was 11/12 and as I grew and matured so did the story. It took sometime to acknowledge that a story grows with you and that bad decisions can be made but they aren't as horrible as we think they are. That's why we learn and grow.

Thank you so much for doing a video like this! I hope there will be more.
You inspired me to read sooo many books after Eragon! I read Eragon when I was in 2nd or 3rd great and it really made me a book/Fantasy nerd! And recently your Inheritance cycle has inspired me AGAIN to pick up more books and to start reading again (last few years of school really killed all my love for reading lmao).
Back in the day you also inspired me to start writing myself, after finishing the third Eragon book I started writing cringeworthy Fanfictions when I was 10 or sth
And now your livestreams over the past few weeks have really inspired me to write again!! So the series comes at a perfect time.
Also, thank you sooo soooo much for answering all my (and other peoples) question during the last livestream!
You were so patient, and its great to see that the person you somewhat adore (as a writer) also has a great great personality!

That first advice is so true and is a stigma that needs to dissapear. I dont mean to let mistakes slip into the final edition, but stop being unforgetful to your own manuscript because of a couple initial mistakes. This is what i believe is the bigger obstacle to any aspiring author to really start, starting to believe in yourself.
