I LOVE the Japanese and Mofi cds. Not even because I think they "sound SOOOO much better", but really because they add more of the collectability aspect that makes vinyl collecting attractive to me.
Hy Frank. Hope all is well in the province of Manitoba. The melt is on. I decided to order a SHM cd. I chose a 2009 remastered Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells 🔔 😀. I have listened to this recording on all formats many times over the year's. I do believe it sounds better than the original cd. (Of course) I think th quality is better. Keep on spinning Frank and thanks for the channel. Cheers The Todd
There will never be a "better" CD until jewel cases stop getting broken, CDs getting scratched and me losing the discs. Japan makes some sick stuff and like their careful packaging. Loudness!
@@bikdav Well. I still haven't seen better case thus far. Easy and cheap to replace if they do get broken, and they do protect CD's and leaflets really well. I used to break them back when I moved them in my car, but there is no reason for that in these days.
I really love the packaging of those Japanese mini lps! I preordered the new Def Leppard cd from CDJapan and I also have a couple Jazz sacds on order from there as well. Great vid Frank!
It’s great to see you give some love to SNFU. I unfortunately don’t have that 7”. Thanks for sharing it with us. SNFU have some reissues “CHASE THE GLORY TATTOOS AND RECORDS” out of Canada.
Great video Frank. I was not aware of the SHM CD's from Japan.. but you have got me started to do a few searches.. and you are right - some prices are high !!
I have a couple of Styx SHM CD's. They're Paradise Theater and Crystal Ball, both purchased from Amazon Japan. I compared them to the US issue CD's I have of those albums and I can't tell the difference. My system is Marantz CD player, stereo receiver and KEF Q350 speakers. I like the packaging of them, but noth the price.
I have Night Ranger’s Dawn Patrol and The Cars’ Panorama on SHM-CD, and I think one big difference is that the drums hit harder. I feel it more in the chest than I do the originals. I’m very impressed with them. I also love the reissues from Culture Factory (on CD and vinyl). Very powerful sounding remasters, imo. Love your channel, Frank! Look forward to them every week.

I picked up a Japanese CD release of The Pretty Reckless 1st album 'Light Me Up'. I mainly got it as it featured a few extras like a cardboard slip cover with different artwork and OBI, and a couple of bonus tracks
Great video Frank as usual. I love your informative videos. Although I'm still a Vinyl grandpa I have a few CDs I bought in the late 90s to early 2000s. I don't have a CD player hooked up to my system so they're just collecting dust now. I can appreciate music in all its forms. I have my old ipod classic hooked up to my stereo. Keep on spinning Frank 👍
I have a bunch of those SHM CDs love them especially the Led Zeppelin albums the sound great I like them the best for them! You have to really like the album cuz they do cost a lot more if you can find them!
Got a few of the Japanese Kiss SHM-CDs Killers, Best Of Solo Albums and Smashes, got to say the packaging and attention to detail that you would expect with Japanese releases is incredible. Sound wise it is difficult for me to comment as I have invested quite a bit of money in my turntable set up for vinyl but got a cheap set up for CD's.
Frank , I so glad you took the plunge. I mentioned to earlier. So , worth getting these from Japan. I am ordering the new rhcp has a bonus track. I also picked up the last Paul McCarthey from Japan.. Had , bonus tracks too. Thanks for everything you do
Great video. I have a many SHM CD'S. Glad you talked about them. If you like McCartney, pick up his RAM Mini Lp SHM cd. Sonically superior to anything I've ever heard. But, like you mentioned, it's just my opinion.
Sounds like a software is needed to compare the volume level? The CD discs could be some what 'brick-wall' master vs the MQA? Are the high res streams more dynamic? Could be where they have more breathing room in the master?
Just picked up a few Bee Gees SHM-CDs and waiting on another one and a Elton John Greatest Hits SHM-CD. Gotta say the sound quality is quite nice but I picked them up to get CDs that I didn’t have. so I can’t compare to see if they really differ from “regular” CDs. To me it’s really a nice way to get new copies of CDs that are no longer in print in the USA.
I've bought a few SHM-CDs in Japan (they are expensive there too). I only bought the albums I bought because they reissued some old stuff that was hard to get hold of. I think you'll only notice the sound difference if you have a high end system. They have SHM-CDs with really nice pho-Vinyl packaging, too!
Mr 33 in August I think it's the 19,20,and 21. Gatlinburg Tennessee is hosting monster on the mountain it's a music festival I know queensryche is booked and many more from the 80s and 90s if you and miss 33 I think you would like it .
I am not familiar with the SHM-CDs, but i do have 2 CDs that are made in Japan by MFSL Ultradisc 24 kt gold plated. They are Supertramp - Breakfast in America and Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. These CDs do sound slightly "warmer" than regular CDs.
Agree. SHM CDs sound more brighter, crisper and fuller than the Audio Fidelity/NFSL releases that are flatter and warmer. Compared to the regular pressings of the albums. One album I tested was Styx - Paradise Theater that has been released on all three CD formats and could definitely hear the mastering difference. Same as Early CD pressings of albums sound much different to later remastered releases of the same album.
Welcome in the rabbit hole Frank, from here there is no way back 😉. The Japanese are one of the main reasons why CDs, SACDs and some technically advanced CD versions still get a lot of new releases. I can understand the technical explanation behind SHM-CDs, XRCDs, etc but would not feel comfortable stating a general better sound as I am not sure if the mastering may have been changed and as you said, comparison may be difficult. However, I especially buy a lot of these Japanese special CD formats because of their careful and high quality re-mastering, similar to MoFi. Some of the best versions of older Jazz albums are Japanese XRCD or MQCD or UHQCD or whatever other appreviation they have developed over the years. As long as it sounds great I buy it.
I'm sure I will try an SHM CD sometime, if the price isn't too high, just to compare, just in case it's better (hey it could happen). Some audio fans will probably say one could rip a standard CD with Bit Perfect, but sometimes you want to skip the extra tech and just pop a disc in the player (or "on" it since mine is a top loading Pro-ject). I almost always choose High Resolution if I have a choice in downloads, even though I only hear a difference on rare occasions.
snfu are one of my favourite bands. Their album FYULABA holds a special place for me as it was the first cd i bought with my first wage packet. Unique band
I never heard of that band that dose Kiss. And WOW they sound like 70s Kiss thats awsome I love it. Im so buying the cd thanks Frank. I would have never found out about them. They have more songs on the website that are not on the cd. WOW hope to see more from them .

Yeah that Klassik " 78 that band is amazing I love the first album they put out it's pretty much of an EP it blows your mind like you said close your eyes and you'll think you're listening to kiss in 1970s great video keep on spinning🤘😜
If you want to check out a modern-day punk band, have a look at Amyl and the Sniffers. Hi-energy stuff, kinda AC/DC (They're Aussies) meet the Sex Pistols with a really in-your-face front woman. Their recent single 'Hertz' is good example. Cheers
THE SAM-CDs were first released in 2007. They are also relased as higher resolution SHM-SACDs. Ony downside to these is that they are japanese only releases. So as frank said your paying a premium for these to inport to the rest of the world and only come with Japanese liner notes.
Hey Frank, thats a very cool SNFU 7 inch you have there. I was born in 75, and was turned on to them when If You Swear You'll Catch No Fish came out in 86. I listened to that album and their first one, And No One Else Wanted To Play over and over and over. I just loved them, really cool stuff, and being a Canadian band was a bonus. They were either from or based out of Edmonton I believe. If I were you I'd be holding on to that one for sure! Cheers
Yes, they were from Edmonton, and Chi later moved to Vancouver. I lived in Edmonton for many years, and that is where I found the EP (at the bottom of a box of records I purchased from someone selling off their collection). Thanks for tuning in!
hey frank....love the klassik '78 idea....the only issue i see with it is the fact that, any kiss fan who missed kiss putting out a band album in '78, would be looking for vinyl and not a cd....kinda takes the magic out of the moment....but a cool idea nonetheless...stay well my friend...peace always...rocky
Very true. They have said there is a vinyl version coming out, and are currently dealing with a nine month delay/backlog. This is one product that screams for a vinyl release.
I need that klassik 78! If you haven’t heard it , search UA-cam for double Virgo. He recorded a cover of secretly cruel that is supposed to be what if it was recorded in the 70s.. pretty cool
After listening to the van Halen shm cd like the sound . I listed also to the rhcp very good . The Scorpions to me sounded the best and the best of the lot .
I have the opposite feeling about the Scorps new album. I had pretty high expectations for it, and it just seemed to fall flat compared to some of the other new music I've been listening to. Seems like everyone else loves it. I don't hate it, but I don't know if I'd reach for it to listen. Probably going to be one of those I'll have to revisit in a year or so to see what I missed now.
Collecting store exclusive/international CDs will be the equivalent of color variants in vinyl if the CD revival ever really strikes. I'm a fan of both formats so I'm all for it!
I have seen some Japanese cd's but never bought any. The Japanese lyrics were difficult to read, so it's good that the English version is included. I am surprised that there really is a sound difference. I thought it was more of an accuracy of reading the disc to avoid skipping and such.
Well, in fairness, I did not compare SHM-CD to CD, but rather SHM-CD to MQA file... I may have noticed the same differences if I had compared regular CD to MQA file as well.
Dude, SNFU are very well known outside of Canada. In 1987 if you look at photos on Metallica's "garage days re-revisited" ep James Hetfield is wearing an SNFU shirt. After Mr. Chi-Pig died Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) paid tribute to him on their social media accounts.
Those Japanese SHM-CDs might last longer than normal cd's but they sound the same. okay, because they are better manufactured and are made out of higher quality plastic some players might read the information on the discs easier, but the mastering of the discs is still much more important for the sound. p.s.: I've made a little video about the basic information you should know about compact discs on my channel. check it out guys and garls^
The new Scorpions album is excellent reminds me of the late 70s early 80s era, got the 2 LP edition, really happy with it and will be visiting my turn table often !
I'm always thought that Japanese CDs are just ripped off from the US and European CDs on FLAC or even WAV archives and later they just touch a little bit the EQ on a Mac with programs to edit audio and just higher the mids or highs to make them sound different. But that's my perception for years.
I've been buying Japan CD's for 30 years, most of them usually contain exclusive bonus tracks and most are a limited print run. Besides the normal CD, SHM-CD you also have HQCD, MQA-CD and I think one more format, which I cannot remember. Collecting Japan CD's is expensive, but well worth it IMO.
Remember the “24K GOLD” CDs from the 1990s? I lusted after ones by Queensryche, The Doors and The Beach Boys back in the day, if only they weren’t (gasp!) $40-ish back then. Over double the price of a basic CD! I just looked to see how much one goes for now. How about 10x that haha!
I always wish SNFU reissued that. I have no idea why I ever asked Chi when I've seen them. Pretty sure I've seen them 14 times since Something Green And Leafy This Way Comes. The last show may have been one of the best. It was a lousy show that they got screwed over on. But since I have met Chi so many times over the years. He hung out with us for most of the night. It was more to do with hanging out then the show. It was on a Thanksgiving. So maybe they were all kinda bummed out by the show. It was still an energetic show. Hell, I once saw them with maybe 20 other people. Was kinda weird how no one was there, but just a month or so before it was packed. The best show I've seen them at was in Toronto. Someone ended up throwing couch cushions and well, it's like it turned into a pillow fight and the foam from inside was ripped apart and thrown around. Never seen that happen at a show. But damn, what a band. Well, every line up seems to kick ass. If you weren't aware, they have reissued the albums in multiple colors. But the fact the 3 Epitaph albums are finally been reissued is the best part. And out of all the times I ever seen them live. I swear they never played Postmans Pet Peeve. Oh, since the video is over. That 7" has always been going for crazy amounts. $400 may be a bit much, but youd think $100 would be pushing it. Bet that if it was repressed by the band. It ain't gonna be cheap at the shows. But I bet $20 would be a hell of a deal. Or maybe $50 if they did a double 7" and they threw in the Real Men Don't Watch Quincy record. Those, to my knowledge are the 2 rare ones. Up there with the 3rd album cover, tour edition of their first album. Unless it was the 2nd cover. Hmm, could be an interesting topic. How many other albums are there, where they had to keep alternating the album cover? Not like Street Survivors. I mean getting sued over the 1st cover. Make a 2nd cover that is a replica that looks the same, but enough to not get in trouble, which they did. Rushing it out to replace the cover for the tour. And then eventually release it as a 4th cover. And that's the one everyone is used to. Unless by some weird chance there's a 5th cover, because CN or CP threading legal action due to the logo on the train on the cover. Now, I'm not sure. But wouldn't surprise me. So maybe there is only 3, but I'm guessing, the tea at least 4. That last one my be my imagination.
If you can track down a copy, Heart's Dreamboat Annie is on an SHM-CD. It has no extra tracks though, yet it has become my go to copy of the album. I have Dreamboat Annie and a few other Classic Rock titles in the SHM-CD format. I like them for what they are but, I do wish they would be printed in bigger numbers for better availability.
Honestly, I think most if not all of the Japanese odd cd formats are snake oil. They use just enough technical jargon to make it sound plausible. At the end of the day, though, they are still just cds - 16 bit, 44.1 khz. However, not all but many of the odd formats are also remastered. Sometimes, say an SHM-CD, may be a fresh remaster while normal cds are still using an older remaster. It's the mastering, I believe, that is making the difference. I currently own 6 shm-cds. The first ones I got were Great White's Twice Shy and Hooked. As far as I'm aware, until recently, only some of the songs off these were remastered for the Greatest Hits release. The shm-cds were fresh remasters of the entire albums along with the pertinent b sides as bonus tracks. Aside from the 6 shm-cds, I also have Elf's L.A./59 aka Carolina County Ball on blu-spec cd. And Roger Glover's Butterfly Ball with K2 HD Mastering.
@@Channel33RPM In order to improve CD's you would have to change them, and in return change the player. Then they would not be "standard" anymore. The old tube televisions do not exist anymore, they were "improved" out of existence. The CD was improved into SACD, which was then strangled in the cradle. The powers that be want streaming, easier to control
I have never heard these cds but There is a lot of snake oil now in music record company retail business if a normal cd is produced well the sound is fantastic but there is a lot of small records companies that reissue old music that the big labels don’t care about and license it out with god knows what master tapes and they don’t care how the recording sounds Wounded Bird records is one label their cds sound horrible even Rock Candy reissues are bad all they do is make the music louder and compressed i have some the Angel discography from them and it’s hard to listen to compared to a few I have that are original cds And with vinyl reissues the tapes they use are digital files and sell them at a premium price and most of the time the cd version is better I have researched on UA-cam to learn about what companies are selling and I watch interviews with sound engineers and other people who work in the business saying that half speed masters audiophile records are just hype that record companies spin so people spend more dollars thinking there getting a better product as the same with 240 180 vinyl they don’t make a difference in sound but marketed like they do Record companies will kill of maybe the new vinyl market if they keep putting up the prices delivering dodgy products and making false claims .

Very cool to hear.
I think CD is the best format!
Cool video thanks for sharing
Those Japanese SHM-CDs might last longer than normal cd's but they sound the same. okay, because they are better manufactured and are made out of higher quality plastic some players might read the information on the discs easier, but the mastering of the discs is still much more important for the sound.
p.s.: I've made a little video about the basic information you should know about compact discs on my channel. check it out guys and garls^
The new Scorpions album is excellent reminds me of the late 70s early 80s era, got the 2 LP edition, really happy with it and will be visiting my turn table often !
Such a great album... I keep going back to it.
Thanks for the video,, I agree the Klassik 78 CD is really good 👍
Oh man yeah... I have been cranking the CD all week. Thanks for tuning in!
I used to have a couple SNFU 45’s. Hope to God I didn’t have that one. I regret getting rid of enough shit already.
I'm always thought that Japanese CDs are just ripped off from the US and European CDs on FLAC or even WAV archives and later they just touch a little bit the EQ on a Mac with programs to edit audio and just higher the mids or highs to make them sound different. But that's my perception for years.
The Japanee are very passoinate about audio and a lot of pressings sound better than most. A lot come with bonus tracks even on first pressings.
I need to get back to Japan someday!
mr. Finglish (Bäd English Recs)
It would be awesome to visit Japan... on my bucket list for sure.
Great album by Scorpions Rock Believer. I’ve been listening to it every day now. I might as well get that Japanese deluxe version soon 🤘🎧
I've been listening to it regularly as well... such a great release.
Great video Brother Thanks for sharing Your passion for music 😀👍♥️🇨🇦🌎🔊🎶🎶🎶🎶💯💯
Thanks for tuning in!
It's shm-sacd
I am sure I will be buying more of them... they have a lot going for them.
@@danielpryor7167 yes that's the one, might be one more too. All these formats can be confusing :)
Oh yeah it's UHQCD as well.
CD's sound soooooo good (as long as they are not brickwalled)
Absolutely.
Klassik 78 are planning on releasing the new album on vinyl as they've said in a recent interview.
It screams for a vinyl release, for sure. The artwork would look great blown up a bit larger.
@@Channel33RPM I'm hoping they also give their two previous albums the vinyl treatment too 🤞
Remember the “24K GOLD” CDs from the 1990s? I lusted after ones by Queensryche, The Doors and The Beach Boys back in the day, if only they weren’t (gasp!) $40-ish back then. Over double the price of a basic CD!
I just looked to see how much one goes for now. How about 10x that haha!
Ah yes.... I could not afford them back them, but my wife has a U2 gold CD somewhere.
Have my Metallica Master of Puppets on one. Will never sell! Lol
I remember those. I couldn’t tell the difference in sound between them and a conventional CD.
I really hate auto correct
RIP Chi. Very cool that you got to know him.
There's some good Klassic 78 on UA-cam, check it out! I'm hooked! Thanks Frank 😁
I was hooked from the get go as well..Glad you dig em.
Klassik 78 is like Reckless Heart, a Bon Jovi tribute band playing fake , but original Jovi soundalikes with lewd sexually explicit lyrics.
$400 for a 7-in single brother??sell it that's a lot of cheeseburgers..lol
Lol, you raise a good point...
Lots of american bands were released in Japan on cd and still never issued in their country 😂
A "better" CD already exists. Its called a SACD.
*A better CD that can be played in a standard CD player
CDs just one and zeros
Shm cds? Cds... smh.
