Good to hear the perspective of another McKinsey consultant on the book 🔥I hope you have also watched my own "devil-ish" book review! 😈 I agree that the book is not very balanced, but I am afraid in my view it strikes a lot of right points. The stories about how McKinsey Senior Partners handled some of the reputational crises sounded pretty authentic to me (i.e., most probably happened this way), and in most of the reported cases McKinsey leadership should probably have acted faster and more decisively. PS In this video your voice has a lot of "echo" (?), I felt it is different to your other videos.

haha, thanks for noticing that - recently moved and still have to figure out audio.
I think your point is true in that leadership probably could reacted faster; but at the same time, it's also powerful to see colleagues of all levels not afraid to voice their dissents on important issues discussed in the book.

@@missangielu Yes, in my view it is an intergenerational conflict - the young calling upon the company values and the old defending the cash cows. Obviously simplifying here. I agree that I also enjoyed reading about the internal "McKinsey wars" the most 😉I see, good luck with setting up your new studio 👍🏼

Do you know Devin McGranahan? I used to work with his wife Shannon. It seems odd that he has a senior position and is never mentioned in any books written about the McKinsey and Company.

There is also a new book The big con about consulting and McKinsey, from maria mazzacuto. Could you also do a video like this and share your thoughts about that book?

I was actually just taught by the co-author of that book, Rosie Collington, in my recent IPE-class at Copenhagen Business School. Really interesting stuff, so I've just started reading the book as a result. Can definitely recommend so far!

Just one question, have you been paid in any way by McKinsey or anyone else to do this review?
Do you still have a nondisclosure agreement with McKinsey, since you have worked there?

The book is not wrong. Just because it is legal doesn’t mean you should work for any client.

I would say any of the Big 4 have a huge influence on all Fortune 1000… they are the hand guiding companies that no one hears about

    My two cents:
First, while knowledge sharing is indeed important, what the book does highlight is that using knowledge to 1) support authoritarian regimes that target and kill journalists and 2) expand dependency and addiction on synthetic antagonists - amongst others - runs contrary to any firm's corporate responsibility. The bottom line is that morals and ethics should be exemplified through action - not simply as a recruiting instrument to differentiate oneself from other alternative service providers.
Second, citing "we all know that what drives innovation is competition": while that may be true in certain verticals, the book clearly articulated that the "innovation" espoused by McKinsey skews towards cutting costs - without any ethical considerations. The consequences affect generations. Moreover, McKinsey is not unlike any other major monolithic company with expansive mandates. If McKinsey cannot internally provide a novel solution to keep up with the market or customers, McKinsey resorts to acquisitions. QuantumBlack is a perfect example of this.
