Extreme clarity, mature expression and not like a "grenade" had been thrown into the piano like many people prefer. Here, Sokolov shows rightful respect to the composer. This is how I imagine Maestro "Rach" would have played it himself today.
Sokolov has the complete mastery of his technique to be able to play this piece without fucking about with the tempo. He can do it - others seem to have to pull it around with the hollow excuse of rubato! Brilliant, for me he is the master, all the rest follow. As for his Rameau, well that's just paradise!
This is “ THE BEST” interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Prelude Op.23 No.5. The emotion can be felt through the screen. Who was he thinking of when performing this?
As always sokolov has great control and leaves his power and virtuosity in reserve for when it needs to count. I agree with the grenade comment about many versions. Wish there was a Dinu Lipatti version. No Zimerman either. I’m going to go looking for an argerich
Like with all great musicians, his outstanding ability is: phrasing. He has a conception of the piece from the first to the last bar, creates one large arch suspense, all notes seem to condition on one another, which gives each of them a sense of inevitability: while listening to Sokolov it seems this can only be played in one way, his way.
It's funny that if you listen to Sokolov's interviews, he explains how such thing as "Russian school" does not exist. He also turns it over and asks if Gould belongs to supposed "Canadian school". There are individuals with their inner world in art, that's essential.
I respect this performance a great deal. His choices are valid, interesting, musical. Still, the performance that thrills me the most continues to be Richter’s. Including the middle section.

He played it very differently, but I think, this interpretation is better.
I've never heard it played quite like that. Such direction and musicality.
Thanks Sokolov
I've just listened to five versions of this, and the people saying Sokolov's was the best seem to have been correct. Such clarity and expression!
Phabieau42 the music sounds as if Russian soldiers are marching off to war

One of my very favorite interpretations of this piece. Gotta love the Grand and Majestic slow tempo of the 1st part.
Великолепно! Какое-то ностальгически родное чувство возникает когда слышишь это исполнение. Не описать словами..

One of my favorite interpretations of the work.
qu'elle clarté ; qu'elle puissance
Grazie Maestro!
БРАВИССИМО !!!
Amazing. He really brings the g across.
Браво ! Очень понравилось ! Страстно и чувственно, и нет технических погрешностей !
Лучший!!!

One of Giant produkts of russian piano school

Up there with Richter in the outer sections, but for me Gilels is incomparable in the soft centre, and therefore the whole piece
Sokolov also very good in the middle-part !
What about Rachmaninov?
The middle part taken slowly
Not bad
Sorry Richter then Lugansky own this piece

Recorded in which year ? The sound quality is not so good.
What happened to the tempo? I mean it just took off! Awful!
At 0.38 indeed ! But as a whole I can appreciate it.
