So funny how Hingis would do these little cutesy shots just to drive other players crazy. "The smiling assassin" she was nicknamed and she did take pleasure in seeing her opponents suffer. I don't think I've ever seen her hit so many aces in one match. Great win by Davenport here who would go on to win the U.S. open against Hingis later that same summer and on a match point that she won when Hingis hit a drop shot that Lindsay easily got to like she did here.

She didn't take pleasure in seeing her opponents suffer, she was extremely self-confident and relaxed as a result, esp. in the early years. And she enjoyed the variety of the game of tennis so much. That's why she smiled so much even during matches.

@ArthurVerhulst fun fact, martina hinges is the player who has doled out the most bagel sets to opponents if anyone ever in women's tennis. I was quite surprised when I heard that. I thought it would be Steffi. She made Anna Kournikova cry at the wimbledon junior final and giggled the whole way. 😊

Lindsay is using a different racket in the first point. She must have switched after one game.

Yup I noticed that too, I think this was supposed to be the tournament where she debuted the hyper hammer 5.3 midplus (of course it could have been a paintjob and she could have gone back to her pro staff 4.5 ‘mid). But she prob didn’t feel as confident yet and had to go back to her “ skunk” hammer 6.1 mid ( I swear though I thought she played with the oversize 110 but i guess not)

I don’t exactly remember when it happened but Hingis already much more on the defense than she was in 97. I don’t know if there was a specific turning point in her career

Lindsay is the cleanest hitter of the ball, men’s or women’s. She has ZERO athleticism but her technique is unmatched.

You sound crazy af to think that LD has no athleticism with her legendary accomplishments as athlete. Just because she was not as fast or didn’t display great defensive skills doesn’t means she’s didn’t have athleticism. It simply wasn’t her strengths, but she made up for in other areas, which means she displayed awesome athleticism.

Man or woman?? After watching tennis for so many years I still think Agassi was the cleanest hitter of the tennis ball.

@@rajusaha855 I think they may be neck and neck. LD should be considered one greatest offensive players ever. Her serve and volleys are supreme compared to AG. While AG had superior movement/court coverage and was better competitor.
