As a tall teenager I would be asked, what’s the weather like up there, by a short young man until one day I said, get off your knees a have a look.. I was never teased again.

The trouble with silly questions like "what's the weather like up there?" is that people think:
(1) they're the first person to ever ask you that
(2) that the question is so amusing, they're laughing at their own joke before even finishing asking you
The first one raises a good point because one of the things I love about this country is we're probably the only country that doesn't do mindless jingoism.
It's so sad that we're starting to not only do mindless jingoism, with no hint of irony, people telling us to be more 'pay-triotic'.
The crazy thing, as the second one points out, is that these people hate immigrants (albeit innit the ones that aren't white), but they're happy if you're good at sports and will represent Britain.
In and other situation, Mo Farrah would probably have been deported for living here under a false name. Then we've got Laura Robson, Sky Brown, Emma Raducanu...we've even got an american and an Aussie in parliament, not to mention Scots complaining about being run by England whilst the UK was being run by Scots for thirteen years.
The selective outrage in this country has become a parody of itself.
The UK has literally gone "But we're the UK wE'rE SpEcIAl" for the last several centuries. At what point has the UK ever not been jingoistic? Looking at UK politics for the last two decades there is no room to claim that it wasn't blatantly jingoistic
@@blazerer2424 I meant that in the sense of ordinary people and ordinary attitudes.
We didn't care that we're British unless there was a reason to celebrate and/or it involves getting a day off out of it.
A lot of other countries, particularly the us, has this image of the UK, especially England, as a very posh place where it's all royalty and tea and crumpets and we want the empire back or we still think we are/have an empire.
But in reality it's more like 'we're British but we get by and still have fun'. That's the Britain that ironically, makes me proud to be British.
