A wave like this broke in front of me once at Little Makaha on Maui and I was held down for so long I had to go into a trance to hold my breath that long while getting torn apart and hoping I got washed toward the boneyard to I didn’t take two more of those on the head.
@@isaacdemino3243 when you hold your breath you slow down your heart rate. Takes years of practice. Start by meditating. Eventually you can mentally control your heart rate. I use Grandfather Stalking Wolf’s technique of the Sacred Silence to slow my heart rate down. You can learn this through Tom Brown’s Wilderness & Tracking Survival School in New Jersey. Or you can read the books and maybe pick it up. I had a lot of good teachers I give credit to my success with it though. It’s yoga type stuff. There could be a yoga teacher that can teach it to you as well. For normal waves it usually isn’t needed. I’m not a surfer I’m a sailor, so just asking a question…. How can a 60ft wave catch a surfer unaware? Surely there would be some acknowledgment on his face or reactions to a wave so enormous…Clearly it’s a bigger wave but in my 40 odd years at sea I have never seen a rouge wave stand out like that, I’m thinking they were all massive waves but this one was 10’ bigger than the rest…
@@robertchiarizia9463 okay, so tell me. Once you have completed this brilliant idea, how do you plan on keeping the lense clear of water? Just leave shit as it is, nathan florence is an amazing surfer. If he says its 60, its 60

The surfing ones aren’t rogue waves. They’re just a large swell. The definition of a rogue/freak wave is a wave that is twice the height of the significant wave height. The significant wave height is the average height of not all of the waves, but the upper 1/3 of them. For example, consider a data set of current waves (arranged in ascending order) that is 10, 10, 15, 15, 20, 20. The tallest 1/3 waves would be 20, 20. The average of 20 and 20 is 20. So the significant wave height would be 20 feet. A “rogue wave” would need to be twice this height - 40 feet or higher. In other words, rogue waves aren’t one of several large waves that are typical in the current conditions. Rogue Waves are abnormally huge waves that hit you out of nowhere and were not expected at all. They are found far out at sea. Not on the beach.
Your right on bro, I've read about rouges, in fact my cousin was out in the gulf of Mexico and was hit by one , it's a freak occurrence, he was coming back in from being many miles at sea fishing and said a giant wall of water was heading straight at him ,in mid sea with only avg wave highs of about 4-6' , so a monster wave about 20' high a wall of water spanning the horizon , he faced the boat straight on a 29ft cruiser and rode right over that monster , on a clear blue sky day , strange as hell this phenomenon. Massive tankers vanish all the time , it's when it catches you sideways your done.
