I was presented at the 1972 Regional International Debutante Ball held in North Carolina. I enjoyed all of the festivities, and the Ball presentation.

What exactly is a "socialite"? And what is it in NYC? Is it mostly about coming from $, attending social events and looking/"behaving" good? Please explain

    • @LA_HA
      @LA_HA 3 роки тому +9

A socialite is a woman from a family of name and, yes, generally, wealth. There are social seasons where the young people in these families have parties and other outings to introduce them to one another and form friendships for them. This is due to the fact that many of these young people are often targets for their family and money to those outside of their circle, so this is a way for them to have fun while learning how to navigate the world for people of their stature.
But, a debutant ball (also called a cotillion, or coming out party) is a presentation of girls between 15 and 18 to society, to show they are now adult young women, no longer children.
In the past, only wealthy young people participated. But, in the contemporary era, girls from all types of families do this. Usually, it's through a sorority chapter, social organization, or city institution.
Again, it's just a way to be presented as an adult to one's society. Some people think it's old fashioned, snobby, and/or degrading in some way. I can't speak to their reasons since I don't really care. I've been to a couple, and they're very formal, beautiful, and from what I know, it's a fun, once in a lifetime experience. I would encourage any young woman to participate.
      I hope that helps.

@@LA_HA wow that explains more than Google, thank you..
The reason I asked was bc it was in the new Borat movie and the scene at the debutante ball was brilliant yet I never heard of it.. I mean I was certain there are all types of social events amongst wealthy families (I went to college on the upper east side in NYC where everyone looks like Hillary so I've seen and heard things but was never interested until it's existence was confirmed and i was intrigued lol
So one of the biggest reasons is to keep away unknown/outsiders who might be conning the girl for the family $? Or is the emphasis more about dating within the community (how are the communities formed? Work? Church? Philanthropy? Neighborhood?)
I can't imagine a young girl being sold into marriage, in today's culture with feminism on the rise again.. are there many girls that refuse this type of "arrangement"? And if they do refuse...are they shunned from the community or is it just brushed off? I can also imagine mothers bullying their daughters into marrying;for access the other side's family royalty.. (I.e. Rose in Titanic)
Is it the same with the males? I'm trying to get into the mindstate.. does religion play a role? Education? What are the rules for "outsiders" and who is an outsider?
I know that in Judaism (it's similar and also classist) so when the male or female feel ready to be married, they tell their parents who inform the Rabbi to make an appointment where they explain everything needed to know about the opposite sex (from intimate to religious details). They don't believe in dating and see it as a waste of time bc one must first decide that they're ready to get married. I'm sure there's a lot more details involved but I've seen the richest communities who live in fenced off neighborhoods full of Places and a guesthouse plus a few Lamborghinis for the kids and I'm sure they do something like this..I draw the line at inbreeding which is unusual, gross and happens (rarely) everywhere and to anyone.. usually by force, it's a dark topic but everyone I've spoken to is against it.
Do people ever crash a debutante or "debudude" balls like a wedding? How do they sneak in?
Many thanks in advance for the interesting info, I'd love to hear more. Take care 🤯😊
P.S. unless you have a great sense of humor - I'd stay away from the Borat scene =]

@@LA_HA Also, you mentioned "coming out parties" which most people understand to mean "homosexual coming out of the closet party" and is full of gay pride celebration and "activities.". What happens if a young man tells his family that he's gay? In theory and if it's ever happened before? Thanks again.

@@XanderShiller It's typical to believe that America doesn't have royalty, per se. However, we kinda sorta do. Take a look at the Kennedys. That whole era of the Kennedy family being involved in the upper echelons of politics as a political dynasty started off as a time known as "Camelot." Being that King Arthur is a British king that's as Royal as you can get, you can see the connection. But, the people that were the English Mayflower blue bloods and the wealthy German and Dutch that came over and settled America in the early days of colonialism are typically what you would call WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants). At the time, they were a closed circle, so people of different colors, religions, and all that we're not welcome. As time went on and vast amounts of money was made by different types of people, including Jewish and Catholics, some of those rules started relaxing a little bit because money is money and a good family is a good family.
From what I gather, families are very important to people of this stature because this is where ironclad loyalty and the strongest bonds can be found. Yes, there's greed and competition, etc, but your family and closest friends are the devils you know and will have your back against all outside forces. It's the same when people of any group marry members of said group - they understand your pain.
In the olden days of yore, young people were expected to marry whomever was picked out for them. It's infamous for being marriages of contractual bridge building, not love. Still, to be fair and real about it, in their point of view, making sure your children were financially set Is showing a huge amount of love. What parent doesn't think in this way? But, we like to shame the Highest Percenters because they're excellent at it and the Low Rollers aren't. Yet, when the lotto is near a billion dollars, the ticket sales go way up. See? Envy.
As time moved on, it's likely the rules were broken for love matches rather than joining of assets. I have no stats to back this up, but I wonder if this happened when "commoners" began invading the long-standing bastions of wealth - the boarding schools, finishing schools, universities, fraternities and sororities, tours of Europe, and being true believers in the American Dream of Opportunity.
If you think of it, there's nothing different between the wealth of a Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan, Rothschild, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Bush, etc. and what European and British aristocrats have. Historically, when the British aristocrats began losing money just before the turn of the last century, it wasn't unusual to look to America for families with tons of wealth and power for potential marriage partners. The Lords and Ladies had titles but dwindling funds; Americans had stacks of cash and a desire for peerage. Bingo. The American Revolution is all forgotten. And why not? Many of the Founding Fathers and others were wealthy Brits before they were wealthy Americans. Wealthy Brits were born and raised in the Colonies as well as travelled here and there to marry.
The wealthy started almost All American trends when it comes to educating and spoiling their children. What the wealthy have, we all want. So, when you get some money, you join their country clubs, yacht clubs, eat what they eat, wear what they wear, walk and talk like them, and do what they do. Ever hear of the Transatlantic accent, dee-ah? Ski trips, shopping jags, and boarding schools in Switzerland? Gambling in Monaco. Sunning on the Riviera? Fashion housing in Paris and Milan? Bank accounts in Zurich, London, Rome, Hong Kong, the Caymans?
If you watch James Bond, maybe you get the Hollywood peek into their world, but really, the wealthier, the more likely they keep a low profile. They teach their kids about money, discernment, manners, and all that. This means debutante balls.
"Coming out" for gays is very recent, kinda like the word "gay." Where do you think they got it? The rich had that first. The meaning remains. It means to be presented to society as a full-fleged member of the tribe.
Sneaking in is generally very difficult for high society events, weddings, balls, and cotillions included. If you can sneak in, it's sponsored by a middle class group, sorority, or something of that sort. That's why when you see the real high society debutante balls, the comment section is full of haters writing about snobs and showing levels of envy only reserved for the truly rich by the truly not. haha
We have to believe the wealthy are selfish, evil, and undeserving because it makes our fiscal incompetence and desire to escape poverty seem like righteous martyrdom. We ignore how much they give to the poor and to society overall for everyone's benefit. For hundreds of years, that's what wealthy people did and still do - create charities and organizations "to help the less fortunate," give balls, auctions, and fundraisers for causes, and made it a Thing That's To Be Done. The newly rich (*cough** Politicians *cough** Hollywood *cough** Athletes, musicians, and UA-camrs **cough*) tend to give because it looks good, curries favor, and other egotistical reasons. In the Puritan tradition, the majority of what the wealthy does goes without a press release and other fan fare beyond a groundbreaking ceremony and a name on a building. And we hate them for it.
Well, I hope that helps. Again, I don't profess to be a scholar of the lifestyles of the wealthy yet not very famous. I know a bit, but not everything, so I'll try to answer questions if I know about it.
