We visited The Ocean Race in Genova, Italy!

- Me and Silje got invited to Genova, Italy, in June, to join the spectacular event. We were there when the worlds fastest monohulls arrived for the last leg of The Ocean Race. It was mid summer down there, so it got pretty hot under that hat at times for sure! But what an amazing experience for a huge "The Ocean Race"-fan like my self! And we even got to sail on a VOR 65!

I made a typo late in the video, its Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, not Alex..! Dont know how I did that to one of my biggest sailing heroes! Please forgive me!😇🙌
How could you do that? (; JK ..That guy is a legend. Someday, many years from now some kid is going to do a video on the legendary Viking sailor Alex Aanderaa!! HA!
He is truly an amazing person.
I met Sir Robin during my Clipper training and several times in passing on the pontoons. We were also mourned alongside him and saw him day after day working away on his own yacht in Gosport. True to being British, he even drives an old Defender 90. What a sailor!!
And awesome that you were onboard with team Malizia and met Boris, Will and fly-captain 😎
Johnston…Thomson…
Great stuff mate! To share the experience with Silje and hook up with Sam, Dan and Kika, awesome. Sir Robin is such a great guy hey, got to meet him too, years back in Capetown. The Volvo Oceans and Imoca’s, thrilling. Reminds me of the day I got to sail with Alex Thomson on his Open 60, first generation. Gotta share: age 48, I got back at it, sold the house, bought a longkeeled Olle Enderlein 32 near Stockholm and am sailing it down. So happy. See you on the water, bound to meet you one day. Thanks heaps Erik, for all the good vibes and inspiration. ⛵🌊⚓
All good mate. Deep water is a great docco about Donald Crowhurst featuring the great Robin Knox-Jonston. Such a tragedy (and a triumph) on all fronts..
Erik, I’ve watched a lot of sailing channels over the years and mostly became tired of their production and constant staging. I am loving your honest, no bullshit and informative approach. Thanks so much for making these fantastic videos.
Thank you Matty!
Happy to see my friend Johannes! I had an Atlantic crossing on his Volvo 70 Green Dragon: amazing experience!!
Great to see Sir Robin, a true blast from the past And Silje too, a blast from the present!
What a video. Thank you Erick. My favorite Viking adventurer . Good luck and fair sea ,.,.
Good tour , keep NBJS .
You were still star struck, Erik. What an honor to meet him!🤗👍🤩
Great to see you do this type of tourist video too.
That was really cool! My three favorite youtube sailors getting together- awesome! You and Sam are keeping it going while Uma gets that total refit. Thanks!
We had the privilage of spending some time with the crews and vessels here in Cape Town. Such amazing boats and people. Give us a heads up if you ever coming to Cape Town Erik. We'll make sure you are well received.
You were able to meet my hero team, Malizia, and visit the beautiful Sea Explorer plus meeting Boris!!! What an exceptional experience, right? I follow them since the Ocean Race from Cape Town onwards up to now. What an inspirational team!!!
Was so nice to meet them☺️
👍👌espectacular.
What a cool experience! AND you got to meet Sir Robin Knox-Johnston...and Sam!. Looked like a great time. You might make a sailor out of Silje yet! Or at least get her more comfy on the water...hoping anyway! 🖤😉
Hey Alex, that was a great video. Very interesting footage of the boats. They seem like spaceships compared to our older sailboats. I cant stop drooling over that lovely wooden boat in the begging of the video...absolutely gorgeous.
Hi Erik, welcome in Genoa, the city where I was born and where I live 😃🇮🇹
Nice video. I liked to see your view on the Volvo Ocean Race
what a GREAT video - great to see SAM there as well....
Nice Video!🥰❤😘
Great experience!🤩😍
What an experience! Sir knox-Johnston is an absolute LEGEND! When are you and Tessie running the Vonde Globe? Lol
Getting muddled up perhaps with another great single handed hero, Sir Alec Rose.
Like you, I’ve been a fan of the ocean race for many years. Used to follow it when it was the Whitbread. About 15 years ago, I got to help sail the America 2 sailboat, which was the practice boat for Dennis Conner in the Americas cup. Then I watched all of the Volvo ocean race races. One of the greatest comebacks in sports history was when the Americans were down eight races to zero against the kiwis for the Americas cup, and they came back and won nine straight races in a row.
Man, that hotel you stayed in was really nice. I bet Silje really enjoyed that!
Very much appreciate your modesty around top speed of Tessie (we know she can fly!) and your not knowing what was going on (you obviously did!) Looking forward to Rum to Oban! All the best
I know how to cross an ocean, but not regatta rules. Suddenly the race was over and we won. I dont know how and why😅
@@erikaanderaa With _Eric the Viking_ onboard - all the other crews were intimidated into surrender!
You also made another important mistake: Knut Frostad was not the first Norwegian skipper on the first Norwegian boat. That was Peder Lunde on the Swan 57 Berge Viking about 8 years earlier. I happened to work a bit for him at the time.
Cool, nice to see @samholmessailing was there too.
Robin, Sam and Erik meeting up! Incredible! What a great video Erik, Really enjoyed seeing you all in beautiful Italia and thanks for some sunshine before the winter sets in here in Scotland!
A great episode showing us all what these huge boats look like from the regular guys perspective..
What wonderful opportunity for both of you
Thanks for taking us along.
All the best Richard
PS... thanks for the burgee! I fly it with pride!!
Keep up the great work! Your videos inspired me to get my ass off my couch and get my coastal sailing license 2 years ago! Can't wait for the next part of the scotland series
Crazy little contraptions - I can't imagine what that would have been like to explore those firsthand.
Probably a bit more rough than Caribbean catamaran sailing, Chandra😇😇
I'm glad you are expanding your horizons.
Awesome! other words fail me now, just love your work.
Erik! If you are hot on 30 degrees weather, never make to my hometown, Rio, in summer! We would see a melting Norwegian then! We have 45 easily!
You're an inspiration, man. I hope one day you make it to the Puget Sound and/or Vancouver BC. There is lots of sporty sailing to have here. Look in to the 'R2AK'. Much love man! I wear your NBJS tshirt on our local races
I remember when i was moving away from Ft Lauderdale, the Whitbread race was coming to town, and i missed it. I did not know the name has since been changed? That was back in 1997 or 98. I regret missing it
Thank you Eric for your videos always a pleasure
I watched the Ocean Race and your channel together last year. That was great and this is great to see the two together like this. Sailing is hard work and there is much to learn.
This was a great video. Loved seeing boats preparing for racing. Thanks again for your video
So cool to get behind the scenes!
Frick'n awesome! If I knew, I would've been there in a "gun-shot"! 😂
Great footage as always Eric many thanks for uploading
Enjoyed it for sure..thanks Erik!!❤
Fantastic experience ... wow!
incredible boats and race
Erik ma eri a Genova? Wow ma io vivo a 18km da Genova!! L'avessi saputo sarei venuto a conoscerti!! Peccato, bere insieme a te una birra sarebbe stato fantastico, un sogno😍 ...e magari una veleggiata sulla mia barca ..sei un grande!!! Ti seguo sempre, anche se non parlo inglese!!!!
Next time Paolo!
I am Italian too and I also live near Genova....it would have been a pleasure get to know him in person.
Nice !
Nice video. You are a lucky guy.
I was on the legends boat next to you and in your episode 😂
Ah, wich one?😀
I've already told Sam. You and he are my favorites among the single-handers. Project Atticus gets the other trophy.
That was a great catch up Erik, just want to make you aware that it's Sir 'Robin' Knox-Johnston and not Alex 😉.
Fair winds and good luck with your mast updates 👍.
Damn! I dont know what happened there, to much on my mind these days🧠 Sir Robin Knox-Johnson! Thank you for pointing it out quickly!
A viking in 30° heat
I felt for you…
Lol
Would love to see you at the Annapolis Sailboat Show!
Shame there was no wind when you got out in the Legends Race, It would have been fun watching how much heel they can get on on of those boats. Looks like you had a nice time.
Steike. Du bynne å bli en skikkelig you-tuber no! Stort å få møt Malizia og sjølvaste Brüno! Artig å se at kanalen din væks og bli større! Glede mæ te neste video! Kos dåkk!
Me habría gustado veros en la salida de la Transat 😅
Mmm 0:17 Berge Viking 1981 😊
👍👍🍀🍀
Holly shit ...I watch that sailor as well on utube Sam
Your Italian fan club is very disappointed because you didn't announce your visit to Genoa 😁😁😁, but it's a nice surprise to see you visiting my country
Hope to see you next time!
Just for the record.... Innovation Kværner was not the first norwegian boat to enter the Whitbread. Berge Viking was....in 1981/82 🙂
big money and high tech, mamma mia, sailing to the moon
I've thought I'll be bored with this clip. I was very wrong :)
The irony of being blasted out to a so-called 'eco boat' on a multi-engine rhib is not lost on me. haha That probably used more fuel than Tessie did all of last year.
Im friends with Martin
👍 Did Team Malizia know you before?
First time I met them!
@@erikaanderaa Boris took part in the Vendee Arctic in 2020, perhaps you both talked about. Malizia was such a great team in the ocean race. 💙⛵️
Looks like a nightmare. More BS than sailing xo.
Those boats are like spaceships
That ole hot bilge smell, lol!
