    Lots of people in the comments missing the point, this device is here to solve the chicken and egg problem of trying to develop an os that has no target hardware. This is a device with phonelike hardware made to facilitate running linux. The fact that it is a bit dated is fine, what's important is that it is hardware supported by the mainline linux kernel so that developers can focus on how applications act and how they can make a phonelike linux distro without wrestling with their hardware or having to use a vm that doesn't fully mimmick a hardware device.
    The fact that you're dissapointed by this device is the reason it needs to exist, you want it, but you want a good experiance with it. It wouldnt make sense to make an expensive high end device that will be several years outdated before the software can provide a trouble free experiance that users want.

    I'm excited to see how they improve in the future, but at this point they are nearly unusable. Anroid phones and iPhones spoiled us with great responsivness, it's really not a good experience to have to wait for every app to launch on your phone. I hope they polish the idea because I'd love to have "pure" linux on my phone.

    • @___echo___
      @___echo___ 3 роки тому

      @Cavi587 3 роки тому +4

      @@___echo___ Well yeah, I get that, 200 is not that much in the realm of smartphones, but a $200 android phone is still most of the time a lot more responsive. At this level it's not really about the hardware but optimizing the software. They say Linux will run on anything - sure, it will, but it doesn't mean it will be smooth. And that's what the team behind that idea will hopefully try and improve in the future. I'd love to daily drive a phone like that, but it still has a looong way to go before it gives the user an experience comparable to android.

    While I am an android user, not even doing AOSP and being "part of the problem" for my personal convenience - I really am glad that this device and people willing to use and hopefully code and improve them are around, just so there is a plan B for the droided up google is all future. Sailfish OS was cool but also on limited platforms and generally some open creativity in phone space; for hardware and software is not bad when the competition is... Grim. I used to like android as "The computer in pocket" coming from Nokia S60 and seeing how limited and counter convenient for me iOS was setup to be. Still, today, the amount of background processing and listening our android phones do for god-knows-what reason is alarming when you realize it actually happens and a lot - how much harder google is making using more purified androids by curating their google-services enforced app store and overall showing why "do no evil" was removed as their motto ever less sneakily.
    I mean, I would not personally yet buy this and use it, but I also think having this option and platform for hardware and software is important.

    Great review video and great channel. We had big problems to install LibreOffice on the Linux PinePhone, and it is said to be not usable on the phone screen. Then, we found, that LibreOffice can be installed easily on a Raspberry PI zero W2 in about 4 min. Instruction can be found on UA-cam. A great coder in the Pine64 forum recommended to use Abiword and Gnumerics for the PinePhone. Abiword was hardly updated since the last 10 years. Abiword and Gnumerics run also on Raspberry PI zero W2. Why to buy a Linux PinePhone then? We can buy a Raspberry PI zero W2 for 20 USD and have the same Office suites on it as on the PinePhone. And we will also test a Fairphone 2 with PostmarkedOS which can be bought on ebay for 100 USD. In Switzerland, the PinePhone is 300 USD shipping included. We currently see no reason to buy another PinePhone.

    If the main thing people want is SSH ability from their phone, there are plenty apps out there for Android and iOS. With Android you can also slap a custom keyboard (Hacker's Keyboard all the way) for proper access.

Obviously still rough around the edges, but the mere fact of having a replaceable battery makes it already interesting. And it runs Linux without the insane slurp of data. And hook it up to a desktop outfit for your text editing needs with the USB dock. If they manage to upgrade the specs a bit, it would be quite a contender as a replacement for chromebooks.

    Hated the manjaro distro (both of them) super unstable, random crashes for almost any action. What ever you do dont let it go into deep sleep, the power button wont wake it and lets just say I got good at taking the case off to pop out the battery. So, this is a complaint on all touch K/B's not just pine64, and the onscreen keyboard was a PITA to use in terminal so I sat down at my desktop and ssh'd to the phone where I was able to get pacman to update after fixing a few things lol. Update took forever, 1.5h+ but I was still happy I was running linux on a phone (I got the 199 bundle manjaro community ed) and it was working, and updating woohoo. So I went off to watch some tv seeing pacman was on 71/481 updates. When I came back, I rebooted into the fresh update, except it wouldn't take the default password anymore, so I tried to ssh as root and ssh was no longer answering. something went screwy. So thats when I started distro hopping, I tried the other manjaro with KDE plasma, ran 30% better, still not even usable 4-6 crashes per hour. dd me up a fedora microsd, poped it in and aside from needing to fix a dns issue which is common on F33, been there done that on my desktop I have not crashed once, even after a full dnf update. however there is still an issue with the size of the window being launched the resolution and aspect ratio means you cant see most of some apps including tops and bottoms of windows and you cant move the app around the screen to get to the all important apply/done button. So I send the app to the background swipe it away and go back to what Im used to, a bash prompt. :)

    GTK that this desktop environment is running at has no hardware acceleration on the Pinephone yet. It's all software rendered. Plasma or Lomiri are a lot more responsive because they actually use the GPU.

    I'm excited for this and got in back for the first community edition but it isn't really usable for me until they figure out how to get MMS to work because without it you can't send/receive group chat messages or picture messages which is a deal breaker for me because I'm regularly in group chats due to family issues.

    Good stuff! Looks very promising!
    I'd **love** to see an OpenBSD version of this phone! I say that because OpenBSD is generally seen as the most-secure OS available (and it's likely to be a bit smaller than Mobian so it'd probably be faster too). Anyway, **great** to see a non-Apple, non-Android phone!

    So in all honesty I feel just as confused as when I pushed play... Meaning I the feature & systems and how to use it just sounds more complex than power up and use. Does it come with everything installed or do you have to load it up and use it a specific type of way to maintain privacy? I don’t understand why you can use T-Mobile and still keep privacy? Perhaps this info is in several other videos but really who every offers a set up tutorial, how to use to maintain privacy and what mistakes may you want to avoid, like downloading which apps to avoid spyware, can you call people who don’t have a pine phone and still keep privacy will be the winner of this niche. Even if you sell it as a prerecorded course. I mean the learning curve doesn’t detour but it certainly will delay purchase time. Right now I’m thinking if I bought it could I use it immediately 😂😫. To many questions. I suppose the company has tutorials.

    I got mine a few days ago. Nice thing to tinker with but not even close to becoming a daily use phone. Crashes at least twice a day, battery life is about 1 hour. Cant run Tor, browser use is a nightmare unless its docked, cant take voicemails or texts if its dead/off. The ability to run Kali tools and the hardware kill switches are basically its only redeeming quality. Cell service for Verzion, tmobile etc works but the touch screen is a pain. Basically its a linux machine in your pocket. Not much of a phone
