He should fly himself high above the sky to see the Big Picture, see the big landscape as a sea change is occurring around his neighborhood: He should see that with the opening of the China-Laos-Thailand Railway, a big port is going to be built at Kra Buri, Narong (the western end of the Kra Land Bridge). China's trade routes to India, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe will be greatly shortened. By then, Malaysia will forever lose the opportunity to become part of the trading route. When that happens, it will be impossible to get the trade route to detour to the Port of Klang in Malaysia anymore. For the manufacturing centres in Southwestern China , transporting cargos via the Kra Port will save nearly 3,000 kilometers comparing to the traditional route through the Straits of Malacca, saving at least five days of transport time. That will also avoid the the pirate-ridden Malacca Strait. With the flourishing of the Kra Port, there will be a natural demand for the construction of the Kra Canal (that is currently highly interested by Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, and China). In addition, the opening of the China-Laos-Thailand Railway will drive China's labor-intensive industries to migrate to Laos, Thailand along the trading route, and form a perfect cooperation with the strong supporting industries in the Chinese mainland, which will strongly promote the development of the relevant regional economy in the Indo-China Peninsula. It is a pity that Mahathir, limited by his old thinking, vision being old and dim, unable to see the big picture, missed this great opportunity, and let Malaysia lose an excellent chance for development! For the current China, the key is to find faster and safer trade routes to India, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. After the opening of the “New China-Europe Railway Link”, that becomes the express Sino-European trading route, which is second only to air transport. The freight cost is twice as expensive as the ocean-going transportation, but the travel time is only one sixth of the ocean journey: from two and a half months of ocean navigation to 12 days of railway link (when the high-speed railway link is place, the travel time can further shortened to 2 to 3 days, of course, much more expensive). More importantly, the capital turnover time has been accelerated (from two and a half months to merely 12 days of cash on delivery), which can make the manufacturers making more profits by circulating their production-trading cycle faster. Currently, laptops, mobile phones, high-end shoes, handicrafts, high-end consumer goods etc. are transporting via rail link from China/Korea/Japan to Europe through Central Europe.............. wine, milk powder, cheese, sea food, precision machine tools, high-end furniture, high-end clothing & bags etc are transporting back from Europe to China/Korea/Japan ........ China is currently urgently seeking another quick trading route via a port out-going to the Indian Ocean, that is why China has so much interest in investing in Malaysia to build a trading route to achieve that purpose, even willing to let the trade channel detour to the Klang Port.
