it is a stellar opener. also the transitions from track 1 to track 2 and track 2 to track 3 sound like waking up from a nightmare into its continuation
Holy shit. I was listening to the Converge radio on Spotify and this song came up. I had no idea what was awaiting me. I am utterly disturbed, yet oddly fascinated and craving more.
the visual of a boy blowing out a candle just for the flame to light up again is such an effective metaphor for the human struggle, I love this song and this video
My mom accidentally bought some magic relighting candles once. It said "Fun party candles" on the package, so she thought it just meant fun birthday party cake candles.
That first minute feels super ominous, whether it be the track itself, only seeing half the kid's face, or the combination of both creating an air of dread.
YES I didn't actually hear the gasp for so long until I started revisiting the album with a good pair of headphones! Now it's one of my absolute favorite little details on the record, so disturbing
I would describe listening to this album as the constant desire to clench your jaw until every tooth is shattered or the ever-present inclination to rip out the tounge from one's own mouth.
This was the hardest song on the record to get into for me. Now, I'm sad there isn't more like it lol. I might be in the minority of people who are excited for Alexis' solo record because the singles have given me this vibe. I do still prefer the more straight-forward, structured songs but damn the dread and horror in City Song is dizzying and intoxicating. I love it.

I would also like to throw in Skinny Puppy as well. Their earlier works are frightening. One of my favorite bands of all time. Daughters remind me a lot of their stage presence... Very mesmerizing and disturbing.
I remember tripping on mushrooms at desert festival I was performing at. maybe a couple hours before I was set to go on I trekked up a large hill and got naked alone at the top, basking In the wind and the freedom up there. suddenly I lost my footing and slammed yp against a rock and as I was trying to find my clothes I sliced my foot wide open on a rock. I waved my phones light at the crowd below, called everyone I knew who was down there and eventually my buddy Parker came up to save me. he gave me the clothes off his back and gave me his shoes, guided me back down the mountain, and helped me patch myself up before I had to play my set. I'm pretty sure he out cocaine on my foot to numb it after cleaning it. but before he came up for me. when I was limping around and leaving a trail of blood, I was making the same moans AM was during this song. when I heard the song for the first time it spooked me to no end, as if someone had recorded me suffering in a position I wasn't sure I was going to make it out of. still terrifying to think about, but the set turned out to be alright. wasn't invited to the next festival, LOL
This is the first track o the album, it's kinda a front to back experience. Listening to just this song is akin to listening to a prelude, then ducking out of the main event.

Love the album, band, this song, but-weird single choice. I'd gotten so used to heavy music being so static and unoriginal, this one fucking blew my mind. Better than "Hell Songs" even.
song is great, video is played out. i appreciate the sentiment, but a b&w birthday cake... really? this song needs much more violence/heartbreak/stillness than a film school cliche can deliver. eh.
@@tgillespie40 not sure what you're referring to. The entire b&w video is a kid with a birthday cake done in a "shaky cam" style. The song deserves better, that is all.
@@tgillespie40 ugh. The song is fine, and contains all the heartbreak etc. one could ask for. I'm talking about the VIDEO, which has nothing to do with the ALBUM TITLE. Enjoy the video, I guess.
Honestly, I felt like the tone of the song matched the video pretty well. Obviously the song can be interpreted in many ways, but it feels like a simple way to portray a deep seated hopelessness. Representing a child like spirit of hope that gets destroyed at every turn, and then the vocalist almost feels like that kid in the future trying to process the empty feeling in response to years of being let down.
That snare scared the shit out of me
same here dude
Makes Swans sound like Elton John
Like a gunshot through the chest
You probably had the volume up high on your Earphones eh😌😄
Good

some say the glass is half full

The three fundamental outlooks on life: Optimism, Pessimism, and Daughters.
The first snare gets me EVERY TIME
Such a violent snare too, sounds like a goddamn gunshot
Scared the shit outta me the first time I heard it, thought it was drone music at first so I didn’t expect it
I’m not into this band yet but I know In like a month I’m gonna understand how the universe works through this album

Liuos Pinkman and no one sleeps
No one sleeps
When the distorted synthesizers hit and the wall of sour guitars come, I get chills the whole time.
Probably the closest a song gets to a seizure.
10/10
Id say that better represents their earlier work
@@deathstramy7272 Yeah, now that I've went deeper into Daughters' back catalogue. I agree.
Clewrly you've never heard Mirar.
god the moans and yelps make this song 2x as scary and disturbing
Yes
This song is terrifying for the first few listens. Now it just scratches an itch for me, feels incredible
The first listen blown me away. It was very explosive, insane, and terrifying for me. Then the transition to Long Roads No Turns almost got me crazy.
"EeuuhUUGHHH!"
UA-cam God please let me like this multiple times
It's impossible to hear this song and not feel a burning...
Or a sickness...
Or anger...
Or sadness...
Or existential dread...
I feel paranoia and dread
It is possible when you feel those things everyday
Distress
Listening to this song while my city is quarantined gives an unimaginable sense of doom...
Same
Imagine playing doom to this
