Nikon is going to sell a lot of these. If Fuji can get $2K from people for an APS-C retro styled body this is a no brainer for Nikon. Especially with the improved AF, articulating screen and dual card slots. In competent hands, this camera can be a workhorse for sure.

Fujifilm does however have a large selection of lenses with a marked aperture ring to provide the full retro/classic experience. Use a third party lens with no aperture ring with one of its classic styled cameras and it's just not the same. Meanwhile at Nikon it's just crickets in the lens department. No ZF series of lenses? Not even one for the launch?
And what's up with having a PASM lever as well? Training wheels? You achieve that with the dials if you are buying the camera for the dials.
Open goal for Nikon with no Fuji FF for those that feel that they need that. But it feels Nikon is only half committed to retro - just after the superficial aesthetic. And I agree with Fro, if you just want the aesthetic, the zfc is plenty, or go for the real deal with a Fuji that actually provides the full retro package.

I suppose you could use it in the street one day then go to a ball game the next with some long glass (though sounds like that's not advisable) then on safari with the same long glass or do a bit of landscapery, then set it up in a portrait studio after that; if, indeed, you're into multiple genres. Precisely. There are more hobbyist photographers than pro photographers. Just like there are more pilots than there are professional pilots.
That's one point that Jared doesn't get. He views things through the same narrow lens of just the professional. He's a good photographer, but over the years I found his transition from a humble professional who peddles in lots of great humor and sarcasm to blurring those lines between humor and sarcasm and now comes off as outright cocky and/or pushing an agenda. Case in point, a lot of the times he complains about foreground objects misinforming locked eye detection I've rarely replicated it. In the cases I have it was when a shot was captured while the lens was changing focus. It is if it was focused on the bubble wand it then acquired the eye and the shot that he captured was the transition shot after acquiring the eye but still focused on the wand. Perhaps it would be more informative in those cases if Nikon were to render the focus square as red until the I was in focus. If that's what he's talking about in terms of a fix I agree. However he presented as a failure the focus system. Given my own experience and watching his video I feel he is well aware what the actual problem is but to push the agenda of Nikon being behind he doesn't dig deeper in the video.

Nail on the head. With its bang up-to-date internals, the retro look is a head-scratcher and seemingly pointless. Want the retro look and to 'slow down' and attract interest from passers-by who think you've gone all last century while telling you they, too, used to have an old Nikon and shoot film? Go and buy an old Nikon, some manual primes and go shoot film. Cheap as chips*, as much 'tog fun as you could poke a viewfinder at, all the dials you want without the cheaty finger wheels and digital backup and hugely beneficial to your 'tog skillset.
    * I'm talking about acquisition of course. Film and processing costs can put folks off. But do it at home rather than pay to have it done and costs come down and enjoyment goes up. And, believe me, when you know that each shutter release costs you actual money, you learn to take far fewer shots; compose, focus and expose right first time; and up your keeper rate. And you learn to chimp in the viewfinder before, not on the screen after. Which is not really chimping. It's being a better photographer.

As cool as Z8 is, 12 bit raw is overkill and 10-bit works just fine for many things without the hefty data cost/logistics. You could literally put the fake film advance and just have that serve as a thumb rest or shutter reset or something fun like that. Remove the back LCD, just have very few buttons, great high megapixel full frame sensor, average AF. Literally build it retro, high quality build but remove a lot of the modern conveniences and save on cost. Personally that's all I really need for what I do. Something like the leica D cameras with no backscreen but include AF and an EVF. Very niche but would be very fun.

While I do like the retro aesthetic and dials, if I already owned a Z, I probably wouldn't give it serious consideration.

Great review, Jared. I especially liked your comparing the viewfinder representation of focus on the eye with the actual image focus on the bubble wand. I'm encouraged by this camera since I'm hoping to see and Expeed7 version of the Z7. I wish someone would compare the Zf images with the Z7 images for landscape and wildlife. I'm curious to see if the Expeed7 can get as much from the 24 megapixel sensor as the Expeed6 gets from the 47 megapixel sensor. If I want to shoot retro, I'll load film in my F2 I bought new when I was living in West Philly and going to graduate school but that's not happening.

The normal level of snarkiness from the JP - no this vid was a we bit more optimistic. So thanks for that.
OK what did JP hate -- let me predict - EVF resolution, LCD resolution, Auto-Focus, battery life, micro SD, LCD flippy great but no tilt on back like Sony.
I was wrong - you did not HATE the EVF or LCD well not upfront. No views on most of the rest.
Then at 2 mins in test version did not have the optional grip - SO BUY the Freekling optional grip.
The camera is NOT FOR YOU - it is for Asian men who carry handbags and their beret wearing german/central european equivalents. I expect most will buy some matching colour. It is certainly NOT a camera for either working pros nor blue collar parsimonious mid-westerners or most folk on forums.
Few potential owners would understand portrait orientation and simply will shoot landscape. OK a very few "vlogger"?"selfie idiots will stick this on a stick and shoot themselves - well the grip is a non issue and I expect SmallRig will have an l-bracket with grip out soo as well..
The target audience will get a camera to match their handbags and shoes and probably hair colour.
AND how about this don't freaking shoot at f/1.2 when your subject is close !!!! NOT an issue if you use a reasonable aperture.
Yes slow shutter read will lead to warping. Well it is HALF the price of the Z8 so...
Lack of documentation leave many questions - but one for YOU -- what card were you using to get a hot warning? Clearly not a top V90 UHS II. Were you writing to both cards. Most should not use the Micro SD EVER.
The iii's will come in 2024 - as has been predicted for some time. in the meantime any working pro Nikon shooter should buy a Z8 and or a Z9 -- if you need the capabilities then buy the gear you need and stop whining.

If it was retro look and also was intentionally hampered by some artificial limitation like a “winder”, I would not have even considered it.

If the performance of this is good they might make the Z6iii have a 33MP (like the A7iv) non stacked sensor, but if the performance isn’t great and people don’t like it they’ll use a stacked 24MP still having it be better than the Zf with the sensor either way.

As a full time photog who loves using the Z6II and is waiting for the Z6III...I'm not that Nikon released this. I think that this would be a rad in-between camera to pick up! I've had the chance to work with the Z8 and Z9 and although I LOVE the quality they put out...they are just too big and bulky for me to carry around 6-10 hours a day.
This hits the sweet spot. I love having a minimal footpring while shooting. Yes, the grip of the Zfc (and I imagine the Zf) honestly sucks lol - but I get it, it's a "retro style", so I'd definitely pick up that smallrig grip.
Anyways, not video showing off the pics - they look gorgeous!

I got my sunset orange Zf today. It’s heavier than expected, reminds me the old solid metal body. So I understand the grip complain, but retro style camera should be held retro way, with left hand resting on the palm, so I don’t have issue with the lack of handle. I’m glad I bought this Zf after unloading all my Z gears two years ago. It sits next to the very first camera I bought, a Nikon FG (couldn’t afford FM2 when I was a student) and the only DSLR I kept, a Nikon Df, Zf definitely looks like at home other than the loud orange color. Tried it with Voightlander 40mm f1.2, it is an excellent combo. The EVF is better than Z6 to me. Also added an orange color shutter release button, it’s perfect now. Yeah, I would prefer a photo only, tilt screen camera. For video, I have Sony FX30 and Insta360 RS One. Hybrid just means compromise to me.

I agree with you on holding it the retro way. I just got back from a two week trip with a friend of mine. Hell, we carried FM 2's for decades of our careers. We also carried medium formats. We pretty much had our cameras around our necks for two weeks unless we were in a restaurant. I can't recall her complaining about her hands cramping, and I know mine weren't. That said, if he really needs a grip, attach a $25 flash bracket on the camera. I use a flash bracket all the time when I feel like I'm going to be taking a lot of really critical shots. Honestly, I love using a flash bracket. I've often used them when I'm not even using flash.

Great Jared, subtle mention about the back focus PROBLEM, which is in the field, a big deal.
My Z9 firm 4.01 still jumps during a sequence to the back, or grabs on to bright white objects. Also has serious issues with vertical objects crossing the 3D focus path. This as been acknowledge by a famous Nikon Sports Ambassador as "... May have difficulty in trusting it ...". SO, you will get great pictures, but are they what you saw and wanted.

Do you think this issue is known by Nikon ?
I saw a lot of people un acknowledge this issue, like it does not exist. In fact like you said, it’s a big issue, because you think you nailed it, but the evf does not show really the actual focus point.
This happened to me a few times, nothing risky as it was not a paid job, but this should be like the number one priority at Nikon to fix this.
This may be the only downside of Nikon right now. There have everything but the best AF.

But I understand it would be more work than Nikon would be willing to do to make a one-off special retro-style camera without all the features that are already in their latest platforms. Honestly, the Zfc by itself is hard to hold, even with a wrist strap. if you hold it vertical like me by your side when shooting street or traveling. I have to hold it by the lens. Even though my Z6 is heavier, it's easier to hold for long periods of time... Then by the time you add a grip, the camera is bigger, and the cam is now over 800grams with the small rig grip.

I think it makes total sense to come out with this now as they are able to leverage some existing technology to make a compelling camera (sensor, Expeed 7, etc) with some new features (pixel shift, IBIS etc). For the street photographer, the phone is becoming more and more a competitor even if it loses out on optics.
I’m still looking for a sub $1200 camera that is smaller, potentially has a fixed pancake-like lens and a first class autofocus system that can be used for creative filmmaking and street documentaries. A 35mm sensor is more than fine.

I don't know if the grip is the same as a Df but if it is, it's ok by me. I have arthritis in both my hands but both the grip and dials makes my life easier for whatever reason. The one thing I hate is the micro SD card. Nikon always seems to throw a monkey wrench into things. Anyway. Sometime in the not so soonish future I will probably buy one or a Zf II by that time. There is a latency problem between eye detection and setting the focus, which can be clearly seen in the video, for example. at 9:35. was the shutter release or focus priority set? we don't know. what we can see, the expeed 7 is fast enough for a very fast object detection (eye dection).
What should Z6 or Z6 II user think of this camera? In terms of price, both are close together. Nikon itself did not have a conclusive answer at the Photopia in Hamburg (Germany).
