"when seconds count, the police are only minutes away..." I live in a pretty rough part of a pretty rough town, just weeks ago there was a shooting only 5 blocks from my house. Unfortunately these sorts of things DO happen. This man is not paranoid, he is a good father, a good husband and a smart/prepared guy. I respect you sir.
the one prep you did not mention, although it is implied : Always keep yourself in the best physical shape possible. The poor guy in your home-invasion example won the fight but sadly lost the war (my prayers to his family) bc of the high-stress situation he was forced into. Stress his body could not endure. Preparedness takes many forms - that's why we all find your videos so valuable - another set of eyes on any problem is always a plus.
When talking "Home defense" there are many parts to consider, lighting, locks, alarms, firearms & my fav, presonal protection dogs. yes dogs are fantastic alarms, fantastic deterents & certain ones can be man stopers.A good dog will be way more alert than the average person, they make noise & can buy you valuable time in a situation.I Honestly cant see a good home defense without a couple of dogs.
I have 5 dogs. A mini Shi-Tsu, 2 Shi-Tsus, 1 mini poodle, and a oversized beagle.. The most they can defend me from is a couple evil ankles! :) haha only kidding, they bark in a pin drops on the other side of the castle.. Good alarms & ankle deterrents
one more thing, sorry to take all this space,, always keep your cell phone next to your bed. two reasons 1 - if the phone lines are cut you have a resource to call 911. 2 - If the power to the house is cut the cell phone can serve a light if you need to get to your defense measures. thanks for all the great videos.
Great video. I would add 2 things to think about. First is to keep a pair of shoes (that can be put on quickly) next to your bed. Not being barefoot will be a big advantage. Secondly, the use of properly placed night lights around your home. Be sure to illuminate the walls that are furthest from you. This will keep you in the dark but more importantly, it'll back light your foes, creating a nice silhouette for you to aim at. If your only line of sight from your bedroom is down a long hallway, it's also good to place night lights in the living room and/or kitchen. That way if an intruder is moving out of your line of sight, you'll see their shadows across the floor, letting you know where they are.
Dont shoot at just a silhouette, you need to be able to ID your target positively, what if its just your son/daughter coming back into the house late at night after your curfew or just getting up to get something in the kitchen, you might wind up shooting them mistaking them for an intruder because you couldnt clearly make out your target. One of the 4 major rules for gun safety is be sure of your target and its surroundings as well as be sure the target you aim at is something you plan to 100% destroy, god forbid you shoot a shadow and it wind up being your kid.
Place battery powered motion sensor lights in rooms, closets, and hallways of your home. There are also battery powered infrared sound alarms one could place in your home to alert you. Small battery alarms on windows, doors, including garage door, and portable sheds Portable flood lights. The portable "Ring video cam with flood lights or the smaller version you might place in be used on all sides of the house. Then you might use the smaller Ring video light camera to be used in all rooms. This would give you stragic information about an intruders location. You could view them as well and it would be recorded. If you have a safe room you could hide there and advise first responders. I like the pouch and the tactical belt idea. I like the idea of shoes being kept at bedside. Maybe include pants, shorts, t-shirt as well. This video was thought provoking! All the comments that I read were great. Just tell authorities you had to defend you and your family. Have a lawyer to call. Tell law enforcement you will tell what happened after you speak to your lawyer. Best to be prepared. May we never have to actually have a " home invasion " experience!
Subscribed. In a self defense situation one would like to have everything that they need but not a bunch of stuff that isn't needed. I wouldn't want to be rummaging through an unorganized bag of gear during an adrenaline dump when I need my cell phone or a fresh magazine. Your kit looks to be the perfect balance of utility and minimalism. Small and effiecient.
Great ideas. Been doing very similar for years. A couple of additional items you might want to add. My format is an over the shoulder small single strap bag. It rests on the back of my head board post while I sleep. If startled while sleeping I just pull strap over my head and shoulder. Everything I need ready to go in 2 seconds. Also I include 2 chemical lights sticks. Great at night to activate in a dark house and toss into a dark room with possible intruder. It back lights him making it easier to see his movement while you remain in darkness. I include small foil pouch of water (Coast Guard life boat survival water. 8oz) can use as wound flush as well as eye wash from flying debris or pepper sprey back blast. Also include a whisle to signal at appropriate time. I include a pair of flex cuffs in case I need to nuetralize possible multiple assailants during home invasion scenario. I also store an old out of date, no service cell phone connected to the shoulder bag. All out of service cell phones still have the ability to connect with 911. I can leave it charging constantly to insure reliable 911. Always available 24/7 for anyone in master bedroom even when our primary cell. Phones are located somewhere else. Cell stays plugged in and connected to the bags exterior but detaches it self when I pull it off of the head board and over my neck and shoulder. Stay safe, stay free.
Lots of great Xtra advise here, thanks so much for for your post.. I'm definitely going to go modify my Home Defense MOLLE Belt Loadout with a nice Cell Phone/Misc. Pouch now... I too have an old out of service Cell, might as well keep getting use out of it.
Ok I'll just get my guns and..... oh that's right I had to live in the UK where it's pretty much illegal to defend yourself with anything bigger than a toothpick.
+Dominik Doherty "but its really safe there" "we need to welcome all those refugees" "none of them are terrorists" says liberals. Glad I live in Eastern Europe and I own several firearms. also live in rural area where you can sustain yourself in SHTF situation. I kinda feel sad for you though...
Dominik Doherty yeah. I understand what you mean. That law defeats the purpose of having a weapon in the first place. whats the point in having one when you can't use it when you need it.
Still catching up on all of your videos but you never cease to amaze me. You cover things most people dont think about or prepare for. Awesome job Sootch!
EVERYONE Yes sootch is awesome and gives awesome advice, and is very knowledgeable on firearms and etc. But he is obviously not law expert (nether am i, just a potato typing on a keyboard) but please there are some major flaws in this video that could wined you up in jail. Or prison. While there is more then this, ill cover this part, as the rest wont result in as much legal issues as i can see this misconception causing. No. When you call 911, you do not leave the phone on. As anything recorded, or heard, could be used against you in the court of law. I have plenty of family in Law and are LEOs that will back me on this. As is where i heard this from. And as a matter of fact, all you need to say to the dispatcher, is your name, address, the type of emergency, and that you have gun. THAT'S IT. HANG UP. Anything you say can and WILL be used against you in the court of law. Most departments even give bonuses to dispatchers if that dispatcher gets any material that can aid in the sentence of you or the perp in court (if the city or DA finds any charges to press towards you of course) Something to think about. Also, while i live in a state that has the castle doctrine, but even for those who are not, if you shoot someone, in your house, and you feel threatened. For yourself or your family, their is practically nothing benefiting you from recording such an event, in fact, you are only creating more evidence against YOU and only you. Now the perps family that is counter suing has a recording to use in court against YOU. Now a self defense situation out on public property, that is totally different. And as well as any police officers showing up to your house. DO NOT say anything. Other than "i feared for my life, and i opened fire" after that plead the 5th. Why? Again, anything you say CAN and WILL be used against you in court. And you just shot someone, you are freaking out, not collected, again- as you just shot someone. You are not in the state of mind to make ANY sort of statements. Especially to the police. So any miss worded comments to the police in this time of duress, can be used against you in court as well. While this i defensible, it will only result in more spent money and time in court. So DO NOT say anything to the police, only to your attorney. And for the love of all holy, do not dare say the K word around the first responders (kill/killed) just say you shot him if you end up saying anything at all. Again, just some potato over a keyboard, but please take this into advise.
One night, 3 guys went in my neighbor's house. they are armed as seen in my other neighbor's cctv camera. 20 seconds later they went up running on the front door. The victim was armed with a M4 carbine and killed 3 of them. It shows that you must be quick to react in any emergency situation.
Great video Sootch! Here in east TN our local news has been reporting on wide spread prescription drug addiction. Addicts have been targeting elderly people because they usually have prescription drugs in the house. You've made some good points about home defense and neighborhood defense.
I recently really worked on getting in shape. 59 years old and don't want to end up like that home owner with a heart attack. Thank you for all your interesting videos.
Paranoia is what keeps us alive. Thinking that because you live in a safe community that the world can't go back to how it was 1000 years ago quickly is naive
Also very important: multiple locks on doors with lockable storm doors (not the flimsy stamped one layer screen door) because home Invaders tend to kick doors inward; also just in case, if someone comes through, I have shelves next to my door, and if someone gets through I have a long piece of steel that will get knocked off the shelf if the door opens, alerting my dogs and me. In other words get creative when it comes to home security. And most importantly, guns, ammo, and practice.
Checking this out in 2021, I feel like a time traveler. Sootch is so young and innocent looking. Now he a grizzled old man. BTW, nobody want to mess with Grizzled old Men.
Ezekiel 33:6 'But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require from the watchman's hand. __________________________________ Luke 11;21- When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: __________________________________ Luke 22:26 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
Cool ... didn't know those off the top of my head. Some trivia ... the Bible was monkeyed with by the Catholic Church. Originally it said thou shall not murder, not kill. Important difference.
@@Cryptonymicus your comment shows your complete lack of knowledge of what the bible actually says. Find me one place where Jesus condemned anyone or said anything negative about them being a soldier or a guard, or a centurion. It isn't in there. Besides the verses already given in this thread, The Lord Jesus Christ never condemned the owning of weapons for defense. And BTW, when the Lord comes back, He comes as the Lion of Judea to wage war against the nations, with a sharp twoedged sword going out of His mouth, to which He uses to smite all the nations. Actually READ the Bible before pretending to know what it says. Call upon the Lord before its too late!
@@Cryptonymicus. You are obviously ignorant. I can guarantee you are ignorant of the what the Bible says. Ignorant of the atrocities committed by the demonrats. Ignorant of all things in general. Education cures ignorance. However I feel you may be stupid and you can't fix stupid.
Great video Sootch, my problem is daytime occurences as well. I'm taking care of my elderly Mom, 83, and suffering from alzheimers. Whenever UPS, Fed Ex or the USPS daily delivery shows up with packages for me, she's up from her chair in the living room and opens the front door before checking to see who it is. It's a tough double duty being a caregiver, and one man self defense soldier 24/7 when you know that at any time the perimiter can be compromised. God Bless the USA
don barlow.. beats the heck out of a slingshot. I have ARs and others...my personal grab and go gun for home defense is a Colt Cobra 2"...it works too.
@@medicalops698 I keep a 12 gauge with extended magazine tube and bird shot. That way I can't shoot all the way through the house? My opinion. I also have a CZ 75B and they both stay by my bed.
DOG WHISTLE/CAR ALARMS - My eldest son and I recently made gun belts for ourselves as we found that they are easy to snap on and get addressing whatever situation we may have. But one of the things that we did is include a dog whistle on our belts. We have a dog and the neighbors have dogs as well. So without giving away our location, we can get the dogs up and barking which can also alert our neighbors as well and send a message to the intruder(s) that the dogs are now up. Another thing we have done is place secondary sets of car keys in our safe room for the cars. My wife and kids can set off the car alarms if there is an issue and if you let your neighbor know ahead of time “hey if you hear my car alarms going off and you can see I’m not taking care of it, please call 911 for me right away”. You can also encourage them to do likewise and it may even bring some extra fire power to a situation faster than the police can come. God bless.
as I have stated before, just beginning to look through your vids and have extremely enjoyed them - but have really enjoyed the endings, you dirty rat - love it and thanks for your reviews and shared knowledge
Why give your wife a shotgun? An AR15 is lighter, easier to handle, holds way more ammo, and is easier and faster to reload if needed. When using the right ammo AR15s penetrate fewer interior walls than most handguns and 12 gauge buckshot.
Hey Scootch00, I agree we all need to teach and mentally prepare everyone in the home but I think educating everyone on the extreme stress they will deal with is more vital than just range time or having the weapon...Many years ago I was dating a Navy nurse, she worked at the experimental diving unit in PCB FL...There was a horrible accidental shooting by a SEALs girl friend or wife, The bump in the night happened, the team guy gave his significant other a 357 and told her if anyone came in other than him to shoot them...I dont remember the exact details but some how she thought he was the bad guy and gut shot him, he lived but it was a life changing event for both of them as you can imagine....Arming our loved ones is important and training them for the high stress is more important...Just wanted to share this....I dont think people are focusing enough on real world fear and dealing with it. Keep up the good work
sootch i respect you for doing all you can do to help the cause but one thing i disagree with is you not telling people to "lawyer up" when the police do show up. Whenever the police are involved in your life it is wise to always seek legal help before talking to them.
Thanks for this video it drive home to me the fact that I need to organize more, set up a bag that my wife can go to with everything she needs while I'm out of the room incase of trouble.
My home is a basic 62' x 35' box, this made it easy to secure, flood lights triggered by sensors, 4 cameras leave no blind uncovered areas. 3 heavy duty security doors, powered window shutters on all windows, two aluminum baseball bats, and at least one .45 ACP Pistol. The cameras come up on both of my TVs if they activate. With all of this I do not have to open doors or shutters and can still call 911 and describe the intruder to the dispatcher. This allows the Police to make the deadly force decisions. I do not exit my home, I will call the Police! In Arizona people think once a person comes in, down they go, completely wrong, you must be able to articulate to the police and a court jury your fear for your life and the need to use deadly force. If you think that is not possible, Do Not shoot unless you don't mind going to prison!! Read the criminal statues of your state, county and local city. If the criminal posses a firearm it can be a shut and dry case, but then again if you harden your home as I have, the police will be doing the shooting and keeping you from facing criminal proceedings in a court of law!!! Never tell the 911 dispatchers I'm going to shot him if he gets in, that will be used against you in court, that is usually called pre-meditated murder!!! Do not rely on attorneys, they know if you shoot they have to defend you and that will cost more money than you care to spend!!! Read and understand the laws about protecting you, your family, property and the home. Being educated always wins out!!!! Can't say enough, harden the home, prepare the yard to get rid of concealment for the criminal. Something as minor as the brown thermostat wire going to an Air Conditioner can cause issues, the criminal cuts the wire, your house becomes a sweat box till the wire is fixed. Run that wire in metal conduit to protect it, have a cell phone in case the landline is cut. Prepare to move all family members to a secure room (saferoom), never open the door to a stranger!!!! Teach all family members the safe way to use firearms, even young children can be taught this. Harden your home!!!!!
Solid advice, thanks for the video. Think I'm going to set myself up with a home defense bag. Your header Home Defense: Be Prepared.........says it all. Having a plan beforehand is a true advantage. 27 years with a badge, and I never stop learning and training. Take care & stay safe.
i see alot of people here saying kids and guns dont mix, that is incorrect. Ignorant kids and guns dont mix. Just teach your kid what a gun is for and who its for and what could happen. Kids only " play " with guns because their parents havent taught them not too. bottom line: teach your kid guns aint toys and dont play with it, if the kid doesnt listen to you, whos fault is it really?
I imagine you're not a parent. If your kid didn't listen to you and grabbed your gun it's your fault for leaving it where they can access it and trusting that an undeveloped child is always going to listen to their parent you absolute muppet. I honestly hope you're not a parent, and stupid comments like this is what makes gun owners look like morons. Even tho i do agree most kids only play with guns because they don't know any better OR their parents treat guns as forbidden fruit and the kids are curious because, well they're kids.
The Maglite 3-cell D-cell flash is a good light as well. You can do some damage with that beast. It was the light of choice of the MP unit I was with in '96 in Tuzla, Bosnia.
***** 11:17 Be a little careful with that wording partner. You might have anti-gunners watching. Now if it's used for home defense, it wouldn't be an "assault vest". With that aside, I really enjoyed your points about preparedness.
Sum Ma I see and agree with your point but one could counter that an assault vest could be used in response to an assault, as well as used for assault.
***** AR's and semi-auto AK's are not assault rifles, nor are they "modified assault rifles." The term "modified assault rifle" suggests that they were at one time assault rifles (capable of full-auto fire), and were then modified to be semi-auto only, when the exact opposite is true. AR-15s and semi-auto AKs are manufactured to only fire in semi-auto mode, they are not, nor were they ever, assault rifles. An M4 carbine is an assault rifle, an AR-15 is not. An M14 is an assault rifle, an M1A is not. A Kalashnikov AK-12 used by the Russian military is an assault rifle, a Krebs Custom AK is not. The military does not use an AR-15, they use the M4 carbine and M16A4 assault rifle. Of course those rifles aren't hunting rifles. Like you said, they can be used for hunting and sporting purposes, but those aren't the sole reason why they were made. I don't think I've ever heard another pro-gunner say that an AR or AK was designed solely as a hunting rifle.
***** The AR-15 actually came first, I believe. If anything, the M16 is an assault rifle that was modified from the original semi-auto version. The AR-15 is also internally different from the M16 in more ways than just the fire selection capabilities. The bolt carrier and lower receivers are actually made differently so that it specifically cannot fire in automatic mode. That said, they're still two different rifles. One is intended for the civilian market, while the other is manufactured specifically for the military community.
***** That's also one of my main beefs with our current climate as well. We've always got to be very careful about how we talk about guns because there's always some politician who knows nothing about the 2nd Amendment or guns in general just waiting to pounce on something they can use to paint all gun owners as evil, bloodthirsty killing machines with no feelings. Ideally, the only reason an AR-15 would exist would be because there's a market of people who don't want a full-auto version, rather than it being the only option people have to avoid being on some kind of registry.
It'd be nice to live in a society where you and your buddies can hang out with legal select-fire machine guns on your backs enjoying the day without any scared anti-gunners calling the cops (which classifies as discrimination).
Sootch00 I always enjoy watching your videos, 1) You are always sincere about what you talk about. 2) You seem to be honest and kind. I don't always agree with everything you say though The bags and belt, are actually a good idea. But in a real life situation I don't know how practical they are. I mean in the middle of the night some kicks in the door to your house. You hit 911 and grab your gun and flashlight is about all you are going to get done. If one was to use the bags and belts that you have shown here I would like they need to practice with the bag and the belt, just like they would their gun. The time when you need the items in your bag. you don't want to have to be looking down at the bag in the dark, trying to find stuff. Sootch00 again another fine video. There is a lot of good information. I hope the viewers can take this information and craft what works best for them.
My AR, an M&P-15X, is the only weapon I have with a light attached. It's a simple Viking mount and Surefire G2X Tactical on the quad rail. Primary mag loaded with 40 gr frangible rounds. Back-up mags in my 5.11 Tactical PUSH ( my Intruder Defense Bag) along with my cell phone, G19, mags & back-up flashlight. Great vid Sootch, you & Nutn' inspire me... you two are my go-2 guys!
It was probably a drug induced heart attack, regardless we need to realize that a person breaking inside your house is a predator and all bets are off.
I am probably the first on the internet to address this issue as I haven't seen anyone mentions it before ~ that is for home defense, whatever gun u choose to train n defend ur home with, the most important preparation is to buy two exact same guns and store one unloaded, away from usage n reach. The reason is that after u have defended ur home successfully n most likely injured / killed the invader, u are obligated to call the emergency services or police once the situation is safe to do so, as a result ur used gun from this successful home defense will be taken away by law enforcement on scene as legal evidence n won't be returned to u anytime soon. Your stored away exact same gun will enable u to defend ur home in the same efficiency n manner the very next day. In other words, its ideal to stick n train with 1 gun for home defense , and always have 2 of that gun ~ 1 ready to use n 1 store away for replacement.
There are a number of good self defense videos, one of which Sootch does...Everybody in my family packs now. One to guard the door, one to call the cops, one to film, all armed.
defintly great ideas . ive been wanting to put something together for homedefense also. since i got to use a wheelchair to got around mostly. I defintly want to be prepared to defend myself
Barnes has a projectile called "varmint grenade" they're 35 grains in weight-but-the cool thing about these-it looks like a really big hollow point-but its even better-cuz-the entire cone of the projectile is all hollow with only a copper jacket-It-actually uses the cavity of air and when it enters flesh-it seals and creates a small scale explosion...PERFECT for home defense with the AR's...Thanks Sootch-GREAT VIDEO BRO!! God Bless you and the fam--
May sound stupid but clear saftey glasses are important. Moving in the dark, being attacked, or sprayed they can help. If it goes to that level through on some eye protection as you throw on the belt
s00tch: Just wanted to thank you, as a young, married man, for lighting a fire under me to be prepared. Your defense bag idea saved my life, when two armed, masked men kicked in my door at 2 A.M. and I had everything all ready for an internal retreat with my wife. Luckily, it didn't come down to shots fired; but, had I NOT had the bag at the ready (heavy sleeper), I might not be writing this. You are an inspiration and I'm very grateful for what you do. Blessings, good sir.
I like your setup with your load bearing belt. I have an Uncle Mike's LBB with a similar setup. After watching this video, I'm thinking about switching to U.S. Grunt Gear. I feel that the belt really helps with distributing weight and lowering the center of gravity. A vest tends to make me a little top heavy and starts to hurt my back. I notice a huge difference when wearing it for extended periods of time. Thankyou for the awsome videos! Keep it up!
Don, In our area home invasions and armed robberies have gone up since the economy has been getting worse. My wife and I have been talking a lot about different situations that could occur in and out of the home. I think we are going to have to get a fight bag put together now. Thanks for the great Ideas Brother!!!
hey sootch. im a new subscriber. im 21 years old and im a recovering addict. iv been sober for 3 years and the drug aspect of this is so true. i had friends that would go to extreme lengths liek your talking about to get money for there fix. its sad what drugs make ppl do. im a HUGE 2nd amendments person. iv grown up around guns and hunting my whole life. drugs motivate 70% of crimes these days. ppl always find a way for what they need sadly. god bless and awsome video!
Love the UM 84 holster. Very versatile and fits many types handguns. I modified one for my ruger mkIII for when I'm hunting. The flap keeps it clean and dry.
I have seen some of your videos and I really do like them .....good job in your bug out kit you even have a BIBLE how cool is that thanks I am putting one in mine......thanks
This was a very good comprehensive look at home defense. One thing I'll mention is: in a home invasion, you might not have time to grab the belt and carry pack. Many times the intended victom only has seconds to react and doesn't even have time to dial 911. I have several ideas that I'll add: Keep a cell phone in addition to your home phone by the bed. Phone cords can usually be cut from the outside. Another thing: get a video system to cover blind spots around the home.
Hi Sootch, nice video.. One thing I noticed is the beautiful backdrop. I wish i was living someplace like that where you can actually enjoy the fresh air and the natural beauty.. Cheers man! Keep up the good work..
Awesome Video Sootch! It was 2 years ago when my brother in law was out of town and I had my Girlfriend, Sister and Niece at home. At 2am my niece came to me late at night and said there was a man at the door asking about his dog. I went out to see what was up and this drugged out guy was screaming about his dog. I sent my niece into my sisters room and told my sister to call 911 and lock the door. I grabbed my Sword (all I had at the time) and stood guard till police came.
Great video as always ..... I really think that having some Motion Sensor Lights outside of your home helps alot also. And even inside my home I have those little LED security lights in all rooms and hallways - These are the lights that take the place of your outlets or half the outlet is in LED and these can be purchased at your local hardware store. These lights have a 15 yr. warranty on them and they automatically come on in low light situations. Be safe everyone and take care.
I wanted to touch on something that you didn't. I know your focus here is on"home defense", however the tools in your bag would also be very useful if dealing with any emergency or serous injury. For instance if a car wreck happens in front of your house. That home defense bag becomes a really useful first response bag.
@Durockrolly You ask a good question, and if I may be so bold as to answer for Don... Contrary to what was previously thought, magazines that are kept loaded do not lose their spring tension. What DOES wear the springs out are lots of repeated loading and unloading of magazines. It used to be thought that one had to unload any loaded magazines every 6 months to let the springs "rest"; in actuality that would cause more harm than good. This goes for both rifle and pistol mags.
in the middle of the night if your searching for a disturbance and can't make out the target, it would help if all people within your home new a command answer. I.E. you scream THUNDER while keeping the target in your sight and if the target doesn't respond with LIGHTNING or the correct response to your own family command, you know it really is not your son or daughter also searching for the same noise. All helpful if you don't have a light handy but need to make the shoot don't shoot decision.
I'm very enjoy your videos. Finally someone who approach each topic with a realistic manner. Also this video is very factual. Well done sir, good job keep going. Your videos are very valuable and enjoyable.
Great vid. Good to be aware of who's driving around the neighborhood. My neighbor and I had someone pulling in the driveway, all the way up to the house (rural), casing the area. Happened three times in a two month period. I let the sheriff office know. They must know what to do because I haven't seen one since.
Nice video Sootch. I look forward to more like this. You’ve been at this for many years and I reckon it is difficult to maintain topical variety. Keep it moving...
A Bullet proof vest is first grab priority IMHO, it takes no more than >8 seconds< half asleep to don from a heavy hanger, being prepared and preset in advance. Glad you mentioned this very important life saver as many skip them, not experienced cops. Most Home Invaders do not usually do so unarmed... Great video, subscribed.
Sootch great vid brother, being a PA resident this week is a big week for us regarding the castle doctrine. Rendell is very on the fence about it... I'm all for it obviously :) Just did a vid on my mossberg and making it a little more home defense friendly. Great idea on the night side bag... gonna put one together I think.
Good doors/windows with good locks are a must. What I did is walk around my house at night and see were the problem areas are and fixed them.I also have two well trained dogs if the doors aren't enough and finally guns but I think the three most overlooked things are good relations with neighbors, keep your old cell phones that you don't use (even if they don't have service they can still call 911) and a family plan.
I'm a big fan of "caching" ammo in certain secure places around the interior of my home, ie; places of cover or concealment where I might reload or reassess. I also have weapons placed around the home as well. I have no children to worry about, so I can leave them out of sight, but not locked up. Great concept, Sootch, just some thoughts. Also, switch activated flood lights around the perimiter of the home, combined with cameras on the corners would be a great tool, but expensive.
I have a background in special ops, and tactical/self defense instruction. Here's a few tips. 1) a 40gr bullet will still over penetrate in a home. Use shotgun or pistol at home unless you're a VERY good shooter. 2) Have safe rooms on BOTH sides of the house with locks, phones, weapons, and windows for escape if possible. 3) Magnet alarms for doors/windows can be bought @ home depot for $10ish . 4) Put lights on guns!!! 5) Go belt is good but DONT rely on it, you might not have time to put it on
You need to upgrade your lights. Try a Fenix TK15 or a Thrunite Catapult from BatteryJunction. Either will give you a bright throw and momentary blinding advantage versus what you have in your current package.
Excellent points, Sootch! i also have 25 foot hornet/wasp spray scattered throughout the house. My Mom even has a can next to her bed and chair in the living room.
I meant paintball markers with SOLID NYLON BALLS (also called "glass breaking balls" or "skull breakers") These balls have more than twice the penetrating power than rubber balls or paintballs. I did a test using newspapers. These nylon balls shot through 4 layers of newspaper stacked together, when the paintballs couldn't even pass through 2 layers.
Great video. very helpful. the part about the belt was really for launching an attack though. no way i see having time to strap on or use that but the rest of the video was very useful.
@GadgetsNGear It's not just a matter of weight/mass, but the construction of the projectile itself. Most FMJ rounds are probably an issue for sheetrock ... nosler tips probably not much risk at all.
Outstanding. You showed your cellphone in the video, and I know you're a big advocate of having a charged mobile in your IDB at night, good plan all around. Thanks again for bringing so much truthful information forward on this neglected subject. BTW, what kind of cigars do you like when you're having one? Have you ever tried the Avo Domane #50, it's my all time favorite if and when I do. Stay safe brother.
I know this is an old video, but you made a very good video. The additions that I see that could help you and your viewers is to add a tactical knife and a durable utility tool/knife combination. "Two is one, one is none..." Pepper spray is great but not always a good choice; like in your home around wife and kids, in situations where you would not want to have it give off a scent that would give away your approximate position and the fact the your are engaged in defensive/tactical activity, or when there is high wind or rain. Always have a knife with you to use as a "get off me tool," a stealth weapon, or a utility cutting tool...
Urban Defensive Tactics I agree carry 2 kershaws on me at all times in case of emergency. I'm weird and like to wear jeans at night but so I can keep at least a small buck knife in my pocket in case of a emergency.
Great vid sootch.. i just turned 21 myself.. and will be picking up my first handgun, a gen4 glock 17. I have to take responsibility in the household for home defense since my parents are hardly prepared things of the like.
"when seconds count, the police are only minutes away..."
I live in a pretty rough part of a pretty rough town, just weeks ago there was a shooting only 5 blocks from my house.
Preparedness takes many forms - that's why we all find your videos so valuable - another set of eyes on any problem is always a plus.
good comment
I thought so! lol
I my state the perp would be facing a murder charge
Keeping in good physical shape should be the #1 priority in prepping.
When talking "Home defense" there are many parts to consider, lighting, locks, alarms, firearms & my fav, presonal protection dogs. yes dogs are fantastic alarms, fantastic deterents & certain ones can be man stopers.A good dog will be way more alert than the average person, they make noise & can buy you valuable time in a situation.I Honestly cant see a good home defense without a couple of dogs.
id have to agree. I good dog is the best alarm system money can buy
+catfishchris1 I have a.military trained german shepherd, a pitbull and a tactical shotgun, I think I might be able to lend you one.
+catfishchris1 those aren't dogs, they are barking cats... ;-)
Dutch Shepherd and a Mal. is my 1st line. Tactical 20 ga. MP 9 mil. Olight attached. 300 blackout with suppresor, Olight M18, Eotech 512.
one more thing, sorry to take all this space,, always keep your cell phone next to your bed. two reasons 1 - if the phone lines are cut you have a resource to call 911.
My husband and I are always carrying, but yeah, this bag is a great idea for both of us. Your 2010 advice is still relevant in 2018!
240pixel we can own guns in the UK we are just limited to what kind of guns we can have and we can't use them for self defense.
Dominik Doherty yeah. I understand what you mean. That law defeats the purpose of having a weapon in the first place. whats the point in having one when you can't use it when you need it.
240pixel exactly but guns for self defense are never gonna happen in the UK.
+Dominik Doherty
I couldn't imagine living in a country where protecting live and private property is considered a crime like murder or assault.
Again, just some potato over a keyboard, but please take this into advise.
this is excellent advice! thank you.
Sam Sung Very Welcome!
Wow! Makes sense to me. thx
thank bro
Good advice, thanks mate! Regards
You brought up some very important safety issues that are not commonly discussed or thought of. Nice job
Browning Hi-Power is my wife's favorite handgun. She is DEADLY accurate with that thing!
She has good reason to favor it. It's one of my primary weapons and has been for many years.
Bruce Forster love it...get some sleep and let wife handle defense...works for me
stop being cheap and buy your wife a better gun
I've told my neighbor many times I you here me shoot my gun its because I had to shoot he said ok . We look out for one another .
Digging through your early stuff. How fun is this? Good work here brother.
One night, 3 guys went in my neighbor's house. they are armed as seen in my other neighbor's cctv camera. 20 seconds later they went up running on the front door. The victim was armed with a M4 carbine and killed 3 of them. It shows that you must be quick to react in any emergency situation.
Micah Spencer Prado great job neighbor!

Whats the daily bag limit? these days ? Or is it like coyote hunting ? With no bag limit ,365 days a yr. Lmao...
Great video Sootch! Here in east TN our local news has been reporting on wide spread prescription drug addiction. Addicts have been targeting elderly people because they usually have prescription drugs in the house. You've made some good points about home defense and neighborhood defense.
If several of your family have phones...divide up the chores and practice practice! Excellent video bro!
I recently really worked on getting in shape. 59 years old and don't want to end up like that home owner with a heart attack. Thank you for all your interesting videos.
Don't be paranoid, just be aware.
I have been on hold for almost 15 minutes to 911 before they even picked up- Sacramento- CA
That’s California for you. Move out of state
Checking this out in 2021, I feel like a time traveler.

Using the Christian Bible to justify the use of deadly force is at least as sacrilegious as it is absurd.
@@michaelyuli8576 Amen to that Brother!
Cool ... didn't know those off the top of my head.
Whenever UPS, Fed Ex or the USPS daily delivery
shows up with packages for me, she's up from her chair in the living room and opens the front door before checking to see who it is. It's a tough double duty being a caregiver, and one man self defense soldier 24/7 when you know that at any time the perimiter can be compromised.
God Bless the USA
I dont have an AR-15 only a 1960 colt police .38 it will have to do.
don barlow.. beats the heck out of a slingshot. I have ARs and others...my personal grab and go gun for home defense is a Colt Cobra 2"...it works too.
you bet it will work fine beats nothing by a long shot.
Lol old fogey
Well if a revolver is all that he's got then that's all he's got but any gun is better than nothing but I understand!
@@medicalops698 I keep a 12 gauge with extended magazine tube and bird shot. That way I can't shoot all the way through the house? My opinion. I also have a CZ 75B and they both stay by my bed.
great video! I got a new one up touching on a few more things we need to consider when defending our home. Thanks for sharing!
Leave the bag unzipped, and get used to reaching in and grabbing. Mine sits on the nightstand.
God bless.
Great idea on the 'ready bag'... I'm gonna put one together tomorrow! Thanks brother!! ;)
as I have stated before, just beginning to look through your vids and have extremely enjoyed them - but have really enjoyed the endings, you dirty rat - love it and thanks for your reviews and shared knowledge
Thanks friend . Praise The Lord and God bless America . Adapt to our surroundings .
Good advice. Thank you.
remember there are sociopathic predators with no conscience.
Kids only " play " with guns because their parents havent taught them not too.
bottom line:
teach your kid guns aint toys and dont play with it, if the kid doesnt listen to you, whos fault is it really?
***** 11:17
Be a little careful with that wording partner.
In California the criminals have all the rights.
thats because the criminals run your government
steve41557 the government is trying to make all us criminals with their piss in their pants gun laws...
Fuck that commie state!!!!!!!!!!!
What a bunch of babbling children. You guys crack me up lol.
Scumbags they are
My AR, an M&P-15X, is the only weapon I have with a light attached.
It was probably a drug induced heart attack, regardless we need to realize that a person breaking inside your house is a predator and all bets are off.
the homeowner died of the heart attack
In other words, its ideal to stick n train with 1 gun for home defense , and always have 2 of that gun ~ 1 ready to use n 1 store away for replacement.
hey put some zip ties or handcuffs in your bag on your belt too. never know when you need to subdue someone till the cops get there.
There are a number of good self defense videos, one of which Sootch does...Everybody in my family packs now. One to guard the door, one to call the cops, one to film, all armed.
Lol I won't be subduing anyone. You come in my house you aren't leaving alive.
I use an axe handle....😘😵😱
Great Video Scootch I agree be prepared and know blind spots home defence should be at the top of our list.
12 gauge and a flashlight
defintly great ideas . ive been wanting to put something together for homedefense also. since i got to use a wheelchair to got around mostly. I defintly want to be prepared to defend myself
Texas is where you want to live if a (perp) comes into your home, that's all I will say. Thanks Don, great videos as usual.
God Bless you and the fam--
O man....u are getting ready for war...ha ha... not self defense...
this shit is way overkill, a baseball bat is good enough lol
King Leonidas ...home defense...war....potato...French fries...lol
unless the invader has any weapon at all, then you will probably die, a baseball bat will likely get you killed
ultra, a polearm is a much better weapon, plus sword, mace, morning star, studded club, baton, and even a couple of bokken all come in handy.
louis cyfer we don't live in medieval Europe.
May sound stupid but clear saftey glasses are important. Moving in the dark, being attacked, or sprayed they can help. If it goes to that level through on some eye protection as you throw on the belt
I'm disappointed at sooch.. this video screams out "Buy!buy!buy!".... not realistic. ..
why, which of these items do you need to buy? this is common sense stuff you should already have.
s00tch: Just wanted to thank you, as a young, married man, for lighting a fire under me to be prepared.
I think it's time for an update on this video. With all the gear you've reviewed in the past 7 years bound to be new stuff.
Keep it up!
Don,
In our area home invasions and armed robberies have gone up since the economy has been getting worse.
Nice vid! A lot of good info. Thanks for posting. Keep up the good work and keep sharing the knowledge!!!
I made myself an IDB bag a couple of months ago after watching your vid on it. Thanks for all the great vids, and great advise.
Awesome video Sootch. You have a way of getting the point across very well in a short video. I look forward to more. Be safe.
Excellent vid as always Sootch ...
When are you going to do some reviews on shotguns ...?
I wanted to touch on something that you didn't. I know your focus here is on"home defense", however the tools in your bag would also be very useful if dealing with any emergency or serous injury. For instance if a car wreck happens in front of your house. That home defense bag becomes a really useful first response bag.
maglites are built to be used as a club by the manufacturer
Great Video Soot!!! Keep up the good work.
Great vid.
Good to be aware of who's driving around the neighborhood. My neighbor and I had someone pulling in the driveway, all the way up to the house (rural), casing the area.
Happened three times in a two month period. I let the sheriff office know. They must know what to do because I haven't seen one since.
your my all time favorite on youtube. Gods blessings on you and family.
Sootch, great video, good setup with the expectation of a knife on the belt to accompanying the one in the bag. Be well.
For what?
Nice video Sootch. I look forward to more like this. You’ve been at this for many years and I reckon it is difficult to maintain topical variety. Keep it moving...
You cant retreat in your house and this video show the setup need for be ready for anything.
Good video.
And the zombie apocalypse, especially on foggy nights. Wow this is an oldie but goodie!
Great work, great information. Wow , look how young you are.. 👍
5) Go belt is good but DONT rely on it, you might not have time to put it on
Just doing the 4-5 year check in. UA-cam loves suggesting old videos every 4-5 years.
Man I watch alot of your videos and learn so much from them really appreciate it
You need to upgrade your lights.
I meant paintball markers with SOLID NYLON BALLS (also called "glass breaking balls" or "skull breakers")
These balls have more than twice the penetrating power than rubber balls or paintballs.
I did a test using newspapers. These nylon balls shot through 4 layers of newspaper stacked together, when the paintballs couldn't even pass through 2 layers.
I installed a deadbolt on my bedroom door to help by time, also keep a g26 behind a picture frame(in the wall).
I have so much respect for this man.
