- One of my very first videos captures (in not very good quality) Drivers and Vehicles from National Rescue taking part in the Kingston Rag week procession through Kingston Town centre as it was in the eighties. The second half (1982) is a bit better quality. If you enjoy my work please Subscribe and of course feel free to pass on to others who may enjoy it.
This is fabulous, my Kingston changed so so much, 😥
Wow, excellent to see, I was born in 74 in Kingston and lived in East Molesey. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
I was also born in Kingston in 74
Having a video camera in 1981 was a very rare thing. I used to go to Kingston a lot back then. Happy days.
Indeed it was and the camera was linked to the recorder (on the back seat) through a stiff fat cable that made it very hard to pan. It seems so odd to imagine the Kingston one way like that now. As you say Happy Days.
my god this was fascinating. I'm 17 and have lived in Kingston my whole life, this looks like so much fun. everything seemed so much more relaxed and fun back then nothing like that would be allowed now, wish I could've been there to see it. thank you for recording this all those years ago and uploading it now!! so cool and I had no idea rag week existed or Kingston used to be a fun place to live. hope you enjoyed yourself and have some fond memories, thanks so much for sharing this :)))
As you say it would not be allowed today, and the sad thing was we had no idea at the time how special that era was we were living. It was of course true in so many other areas as well as you will see in some of my other old videos. All that said you are living through 'your' special time now, so make the most of it.
Same I'm 17 and have lived in kingston my whole life. Thank you for uploading this video this is very valiable information for me as i'm looking at how things have changed from the past for an art project. I now wish i could've experienced life back then. It would've been so much fun.
@@Izzy-ku3pf Thanks you I am glad it will help you, I just wish I had filmed more of Kingston back then, but none of us could know it was going to change so much. Yes it was fun but you are just starting out on your life now so you can make your own fun in a new way and be a bit safer than we were.
4:42 A glimpse of Beatties model shop!
so much recognisable "stuff" and yet so much has changed. Not sorry to see the end of RAG, but am sorry to have lost those care free times. Funny to see that builders in at the poly as they still are now at the "uni".
My husband worked at Surrey comet, they used to do the apprentice bang out , they made them walk around Kingston, sadly none of this happens now,
Yes as you say Suzi H&S would have a field day if you tried to do it now. If your Husband was there when Tim Harrison worked there also he will no doubt remember me and the photographs I used to send Tim of National Rescues work?
@@AndysVideo yes he probably was there, we married in 1970 , his name was Mick Geen, my cousin worked there as well, Andy Rixon. Also a guy called Fred Thompson,
I was the queen in the pageant in 1981/82 coming from searchlite youth club when i was 16 we went all thru kingston
Then this must bring back a lot of Memories for you?
Yes it does i was also in miss kingston coming 4th do u come from kingston
@@AndysVideo yes it does i was also in miss kingston coming 4th do u come from kingston
@@michelleread7922 Yes I sure did, I started National Rescue then in Cambridge Road (now where Enterprise Car & Van Hire are) and lived in Surbiton, Motspur Park and Worcester Park over the years. Well done on making 4th as I remember it competition was tough for that event.
@@AndysVideo i lived kingston n new malden do u not work for national rescue now also a lot has changed at cambridge road cab firm gone n all the pubs gone n soon the estate will be gone as the council are gonna rebuild it
If you left a car door open in Kingston today it will be gone in 10 seconds flat
Not true 😂
0:50 sec of the footage. The car is Polish Fiat 126p. The most popular family (yes, family) car in communistic Poland between 70s and 90s. How did you get it here??
The car was known as Maluch (something small, baby). It was made in Poland based in the licence from Italy.
You couldn’t just buy it. You had to wait for the voucher called “talon” from your employer or from any other communist organisation and then you can go to car showroom to register on the waiting list and...after one, two years you could collect your car!
My uncle with his family went for 1 month holidays with his wife and 2 daughters in this car...
Crazy time but it’s true, unfortunately.
Fascinating bit of background there and thanks for adding it. Just sorry the video tape has not survived the years very well so you could see it better. There are a few more videos from that time filmed around Kingston (mostly accidents) at my main website www.andysvideo.com
The footage is good enough to find such gem. Wonderful piece of Kingston history.
Maybe you will repeat the parade? Good reason to meet the friends from those years.
Now that would be something.
