He went live on twitch after this released to let people know he was ok, and to check on his fans after listening to it. And he is in the uk right now after delivering a cheque to the lifeboat service that helped search for Joe. He raised 21k. He also gave Joe's parents half the money from the latest cd press so they can buy a caravan. They plan to name it after Joe so he can travel with them. ❤ Together they will save lives.

I've watched a lot of these 'reactions' and your closing remarks were some of the best I've heard. Sets you apart from most reactors... and IMHO were absolutely spot on. The music industry has been so comprehensively hijacked by business and diluted and trivialised accordingly. Ren is breath of fresh air in a medium that's been otherwise largely killed off as an avenue of genuine art.

In some of his interviews he talked about how bad it was the first years of sickness and that he told his mom he couldn't last one more year but he just kept pushing through. One of his main reasons was he didn't want anyone to experience the feelings he had about Joe.

Ren went back to the UK for a month. Yesterday he went to his hometown in Whales and with the proceeds from this song he gave a check for 21,000 pounds to the volunteer organization that was out immediately looking for Joe after he jumped and in the days afterwards. He posted about it on his community page here on UA-cam and on his Instagram he has the news interviews he did. One of the interviews he was speaking Welsh and it threw people off not know what language he was speaking.
He then went to see Joe's parents for only the second time in 12 years since he passed away. He played them the new song he premiered today called "For Joe" and he said they all cried and hugged. He then gave them a check for 8,600 pounds and they told Ren it's going towards a camper van his mom and dad have been saving for that they're going to name Joe and travel all around the UK. The money Ren gave them will pay for it fully and they were so happy to see him and for the money.
Ren is amazing even though he breaks our hearts with his songs. But the broken hearts let us all know we're not alone in our sadness and sorrow. We all feel the same pain and he brings the humanity in us all.
Sending you a long distance bro hug from New York.

Thank you. I haven’t watched your reaction yet but simply listened to your intro. Your approach, to me, is EXACTLY how I wanted to see reactors approach this. With some trepidation and gravitas and not simply jumping on the Ren train for subs. Frankly I’ve turned off many reactors simply because of their energy before they watched this. Ok. Ima going to take a breath, grab your hand and watch this with you. Again, thank you.

"never really felt like a right time" seems to really resonate for those who have been there. There just isn't a right time. Someone needs you, something you need to finish, something depends on you, someone else is in bad place and you couldn't leave them just now and so on. To me it literally means not finding the right time to end it. It's surprisingly hard to explain. Lot of lines in his song I can't explain but somehow they make sense and I just understand it.

Love the way your brain works, everything you say is well thought out, nothing is flippant or just guff to fill the space for a reaction. It’s reactors like you who are teachers, it opens my thinking and I love it. Ren truly is one of a kind, maybe that’s why he feels the way he does, because there is no one else like him. In regards to the call back to Sic Boy, Rens catalogue is littered with Easter eggs, it’s like stepping stones through his work.

What makes Ren unique, in THIS day and age, is his Honesty and Integrity. He writes songs from a place of complete honesty; there's no subject "off-limits" or too taboo. He has the Integrity to write it for Himself....not worrying about "Commercial Success", but what is "TRUE" for him. He is gaining an audience because people recognize that in him, in his songs.
Even though Ren has almost 1 Million subscribers and has found success.....there's not really ONE of his songs, that by TODAY's standards, should be successful. In today music world of singing about Drugs, Booze, Hoes, Chains, Whips, Money and Cribs....Ren doesn't glamorize ANY of it. He sings about females, in his song "Girls", but it's about how SHY he is. He sings about booze and drugs in "What went Wrong 1&2", but he ends up in prison, having ruined his life.
He doesn't sing about a Fantasy, but about Reality, and that hits home with so Many of us. It doesn't hurt that he's an incredible word-smith, an outstanding musician and can sing just about anything he puts his mind to.

Great reaction!! My opinion on this: Ren wrote the first half more than 2 years ago.. and shelved it as he always thought it was unfinished.. I think he brushed it off to add to the album (Sick Boi) after the CNN issue (before this he said that he filmed everything for Sick Boi before he went to Canada, and that Hi Ren was actually the last song he wrote.. so the fact that the video was filmed in Calgary, adds to my belief that it was added later. Then, they have already mastered it, when he did the Knox Hill interview, where a chance question had him talking about Joe, and he decided to write an ending for this song.. he said he just sat down at the piano, and after every few lines, just got up and record it, and let his emotions come out as they are.. he also did not rewrite or change anything.. he wanted this as raw as possible… which then ended up a beautiful tribute to his friend, and finished off his song beautifully. So the first half is absolutely about him (and “never felt like the right time” is about not taking that last step.. and delves into how you feel when you are contemplating it.. but the last part balances it perfectly and tells a real life story about what the people who are left behind are dealing with, and how difficult and impactful such a quick decision late at night can be (quoted from How to be me live). I like how he took a taboo word and repeated it several times in the catchy chorus (to the point where I caught myself for days after just randomly singing “suicide, suicide, suicide”.. thus making the word itself more acceptable and less taboo… to bring this whole comment back to the beginning, as an answer to the CNN report. Again, all of this is just in my opinion.

    Posted by Ren
    Ren:
Today I want to write something beautiful and eloquent but I’ve been staring at my computer screen for the past 10 minutes blankly. So I’ll just write.
Today, the 1st of June is my friend Joe’s birthday.
I first met Joe when I was 8 years old, my friend Josh said I had to meet this guy, so we both walked over to his, it took about 10 minutes from my house. I was greeted by this kid covered head to toe in freckles, he grinned at us, climbed onto the back of his sofa and screamed “Swanton Bomb!” then front flipped off the top and landed right onto his back on a stone floor. He lay still for a moment, twitched a few times, then got up, grinned at us, brushed himself off, and did it again.
This was Joe. He’d do anything to make people laugh. He ended up becoming one of my best friends. He was there when we stole our first cigarettes out of his mums pack, way too young. He was there when I had my first kiss, with a girl twice my size on the back of the 42 bus. He was there when I first got so drunk I threw up in the woods after drinking as much white lightning Cider as we could. I was there when he did his first backflip on skates, and saw him do a 720 off of the pier cave, that moment became legendary.
Joe was the funny one in our friend group, he’d make us laugh till it hurt. No one had a bad word to say about him. It was impossible not to like him. Usually we put celebrities, athletes and actors on pedestals, turn them into role models and admire them from a far. The person I admired was Joe.
Him and Sagar knew every word to the songs id write, we’d get drunk at parties and they’d be singing along as loud as they could. It gave me a lot of confidence back then.
On Christmas Eve 2010 I was sitting in a pub with Joe, he’d been feeling low after a couple of consecutive break ups. He tried to check himself into a mental health outpatient facility a few weeks earlier but they turned him away because he didn’t have an appointment. He turned to me and said that sometimes he wished he could just walk into the sea and keep walking. He said it in a kind of half joking throw away comment type of way, then took a sip of his drink, walked over to the juke box and put Dig by Incubus on. If I knew that was the last time I’d see Joe id have hugged him, told him how much I loved him, how much I looked up to him, how much we all loved him, and I wouldn’t have left that pub. I didn’t know that, so I finished my drink, said happy Christmas and left.
Two nights after Christmas I got woken up by a phone call at 3am, it was my friend Ella. She told me Joe was on the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the main land to the isle of Anglesey where we lived. He’d been on the phone to her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. I pulled on my clothes as fast as I could and started running toward the bridge. It was up a hill. I lived about a ten minute walk away, I could run it in five. As I ran I started dialling then redialing his number. The line was busy, which was a good sign, it meant he was still on the phone to someone. As I got about halfway, the busy tone changed. It told me the line was out of service. I got a sinking feeling and picked up my speed. I arrived to the bridge minutes after I left my house. It was deafeningly quiet. I was the first person to arrive. I got there probably about 2 minutes too late.
    Joe’s body was never found.
Initially we refused to believe he was gone. The coastguard came out that night, with boats, and helicopters. Me and my friends spent the next 10 days putting up missing posters everywhere we could, walking up and down beaches with flashlights, getting about 3 hours sleep a night. When you’re walking up and down a beach with a torch when its dark everything looks like a body. We still haven’t found Joe.
As his birthday came around, I wrote a song, freckled angels, a song I dedicated to Joe which I sang in front of his friends and family. A charity football match was put on for him, raising money for the RNLI where I won two bottles of wine in a raffle, I drank them both as quickly as I could, naturally, turned to my friend and probably slurred something along the lines of “This is the last time I ever drink” That was 12 years ago, I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol since.
My first ever album I named Freckled Angels in tribute of one of the best people I ever knew.
Skip forward some years. I’d been sitting on this song I wrote a few years ago. It always felt a little incomplete. It was going to be my next release, but I was dreading it because of this feeling of incompletion. I decided, very last minute, to do something about it. I sat by my piano, and the rest of the song fell out of me. I hadn’t thought about Joe in a little while, and the song initially wasn’t going to be about him, but the words all fell out of me. I wrote and recorded a whole 2 minutes extra, recording each part as I wrote it. Tears spewing out of my eyes pretty much the whole time, and decided not to do my usual thing of perfecting each line, I just recorded every line as it came. This will be my next release. You can turn on notifications by following the link in the comments below
During this campaign I will be raising money for the RNLI, the group of brave men and women who spent hours tirelessly looking for Joe after the night he went missing. I'll also be donating 50% of the profit on all copies of the 'Freckled Angels' album directly to Joes family as a nice surprise gift. I will include links to the RNLI donation page below where 100% of the money will go to support them, I will be travelling to the UK later this month to make a music video, and have carved out a couple of days where I will travel to my home town on the isle of Anglesey to present the royal national lifeboat institution with a cheque of all the money raised.

Thanks Karen! I'm not gonna lie, I look at the metrics just like everyone else does, but more often than not, I'm happy if a video gets 200 views as long as it makes someone's day. I just had my first video break 100000 views a few days back, but I'm equally as proud of the multitude of reactions that hardly anyone noticed, because there's always someone who is psyched that I took the time to check out their favourite song.
I'm chasing a rush just like the viewer, this channel has introduced me to do much phenomenal art that I never would have known about. Often mind-blowing, however I rarely find anything that keeps me coming back over and over in the way that Ren does.

Great reaction vid. The line "It never really felt like the right time" always sounded to me like the right time to commit the act because of things going on or people around him. But a while ago someone I know who struggles with depression and I had a conversation. He said something to me about how, to him, it never feels like the right time to reach out and talk about how he feels or ask for help, because other people are always going through stuff as well and he doesn't want to be a bother to them during that. Even though he's always one to be there for others. So now I'm wondering if it could maybe mean that as well.

I think the first half is a raw subject with a commercial beat, while the second rap part is the raw subject with raw heartfelt words. Almost as though Ren felt he missed the mark of what he was trying to convey. After all, how do you approach the subject of suicide? In a way, Ren has succeeded, Hook you in with the beat then sucker punch with the hard message.

"Never really felt like the right time." From my personal experience, it means that every time I thought about doing it - and once or twice at the very last moment - I was always able to think of some reason not to do it. Sometimes it was practical: who going to have to clean up the mess?, what will it do to them?; sometimes it was "trivial": The new video game/movie I want to see is coming out next month so I should wait. That was always the key to my survival. You don't need a good reason to feel like it's not the right time, any reason is good enough.

When I was at my lowest, I didn’t want to live. I didn’t necessarily want to kill myself, but if an accident took me out, that would suit me perfectly. So sometimes I’d go walking in dodgy areas at night, when I was driving I’d become keenly aware of sharp turns or steep drops or 18-wheelers in oncoming traffic - maybe I could influence the chances of an accident or incident happen. But it never felt like the right time to let go of the wheel or head down that particular alleyway. Mostly I attribute that to my dog at the time - she was insecure aggressive toward people. If I died, that was her death sentence too, and I couldn’t do that to her. I’m on the other side of that darkness now, but I remember that feeling of “no, not now, maybe tomorrow I’ll start looking for a new home for her, and then…” … and then I didn’t :)

As someone who's been down this rabbit hole (and got help, I checked myself into hospital) the "it never really felt like the right time" means two things. First, I never really felt like I belonged and that my exsistance WAS inconvenient to people I relied on. I have a lot of physical health problems and chronic pain. I felt like I was a burden. Second, and the thing that made me get help, I knew what kind of impact my death would bring to the people I loved. I didn't want to hurt THEM. I didn't (at that time) care enough about myself, but I did care about the people around me. I know that it's a contradiction--I cared about them so I didn't want to burden them, but I didn't want to hurt them with my death.
I never heard about Ren until this video. I can't even explain how much this song meant to me, personally. I felt every single lyric in my soul.
It's been a long road of extensive therapy and some medication, but I made it! And no, the people around me didn't know how low and dark I felt. It was a total shock. Please, if you feel like you don't belong, you feel alone and helpless, you feel like you can't go on-- GET HELP.

From Ren's Twitch stream, he said the first part of the song was about himself having those thoughts, but it never felt like the right time to go through with it. He added the last part to make the song feel more complete after his interview with @KnoxHill when they were talking about Joe. Ren said in the interview that it was one of the first times he had actually talked with someone about Joe in real time. Afterwards he felt it was time to share his feelings regarding Joe's loss and added the final verses. As he wrote each one he'd stop and record it so he could capture the full impact of the emotions as they hit him. It's beautiful and healing to open yourself up like that. It makes me love Ren all the more as a human being.
Never be afraid to show your humanity. It doesnt make you weak, it makes you relatable. ❤

I do sometimes worry a little for Ren because the level of attention/success he is getting right now may not be easy to handle/adjust to. However, he did say recently in Twitch that mentally he is absolutely fine. I can't recall if he has specifically said this, or if I have put it together in my head, but I am pretty sure that he said that the pain that he and others felt due to Joe's passing (as the second half of the song shows) have made him determined not to follow the same path. Also he has said that at the start of his illness he wasn't sure if he could hang on another year, but then found as each year brought more pain, somehow he got even stronger and more determined to live. That strength and resilience is remarkable and a brilliant example to anyone else who is suffering - no matter how bad it gets, it can always get better. There is always hope.

I used to work with a much younger guy who had terrible Auto Immune problems. Crippling joint pain, awful stomach issues, etc. He was one of the most cheerful and enthusiastic and hard working people I ever met. He would ask sometimes to not be rostered on on consecutive days sometimes due to the pain, but other than that, on wifi the best staff members ever. I learned so much about positive attitudes from him.

You are a good man, one of the first who has mentioned that, although all looks good on the outside (with Ren) there may be great pain underneath and that people need to be cared for. Re Ren, I feel everyone is expecting so much of him, if you have seen some of the comments about him not responding, giving an opinion on current news etc. I truly worry for him. Thank you for an excellent reaction video.

    • @PrymalChaos

I think Ren is a strong guy. I feel like if the whole parasocial relationship thing he has with his fans gets too intense he would have the strength to step away for a while.
At least I hope so. Passionate fans can be a lot. Especially in the numbers he has attracted. And his art is so emotionally connected that it breaks down that natural divide between the artist and the viewer. People can take this to mean that they share a personal relationship with Ren and that can be tricky to navigate.
Also as an emotionally connected artist, you don’t want to keep people at arms length, but often you are left with little choice because you can’t be everything to everyone all the time. Otherwise there’s not enough left for yourself. In the words of Bilbo Baggins, “I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.”
I’m not Ren, and all I’ve experienced regarding parsocial relationships is the small amount of interaction from my UA-cam channel, but even then, people can be intense. I can’t even imagine the pressure put on him.

Your reaction was the same as the ending of this song. Raw, real, and talking about what people actually go through. In my opinion, the biggest musical travesty in the last century is the fact that Ren's album wasn't nominated for a single Grammy. Which is ironic, considering the contents of "Hi Ren". It's almost like he predicted it. But reactors like you are the reason that more people get exposure to this type of music that has such incredible heart and emotion behind it. Thank you for all you do. Don't ever stop. You're one of the real ones.

I noticed your reaction on the Ren discord reaction channel and thought I’d have a look. A lot of the community were saying good things.
Really glad I did. Your reaction offered a lot of food for thought and different insights than some of the other reactions I’ve seen to this track.
Ren’s art opens doors to difficult discussions - topics that people tend to shy away from but need to be talked about. His work is not created for a reaction.
In the comments about this track, Ren talked about the two halves of the song and that the second part was prompted after his interview with Knox Hill. I love the two halves and how they fit together to form the whole.
Think this track and For Joe, his most recent release have offered some catharsis for him.
Great reaction - sub’d - will go back and look at some of your other Ren reactions.

Empathetic reaction. I’ve had too too many people around me lose their path and succeed. This is a song that I experienced but I don’t normally seek out and watch reactions on it because of these losses. Your reactions are appreciated so much. I think with Ren’s openness and honesty in this song and it’s deceptive simplicity people can experience it once or listen to many times. In my opinion there’s really nothing about it to criticize. The seriousness of this song in my mind is how he blames himself. In his situation most people would tell you not to blame yourself but it’s human nature to do just that. Most of us would blame ourselves and live with the guilt.

First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack I have PTSD and many other mental and physical health
issues but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing
i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about the Hi Ren and SUICIDE songs is it needs
to be seen by every one even in schools, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity
towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all
through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, if there was something in place for children at that time
and even now how many Suicides could have been prevented. Both these songs open up conversations
helping others to talk about what they are feeling. As for Ads on video's these songs are perfect for Ads on
mental health awareness and help lines for those who need them

I am suffering myself from double depression, chronical depersonalization, anxiety disorder and a chronic pain disorder. Suicide thoughts (but not plans) are a regular part of my life. In 2020 I lost a brother in mind and heart by suicide.
I never had anyone I could have so much fun with and do stupid / crazy things. That's something I never do but with him it was possible.
And we shared our dark side, told us about our demons.
It still hurts as hell and just thinking about that one movement and what came next (he killed himself with a rope) makes me feel miserable and sad and empty. I can feel so much with what describes here.
This hit so hard. This hit so deep!
So honest. So true. So brutal. So painful: Emotionally and even physically.

Hey man, I just listened to this react for the second time (last night I had a few whisky’s)
Now with a clearer mind, I realise there are some things I wish I said in my first comment. To be brief, just want to say, I notice your reactions are not targeted towards getting views, I feel this because you speak so truthfully how you feel, if it’s popular or not. You are wise mate, and your final words that carry a respect and concern for REN are so beautiful.
100% made me think on how we all want REN to explode into a household name…. But really, does he even want that? Would that be good for him…. He is so authentic and balanced now…… would super stardom spoil that…. ???
20yrs ago I had some personal success and I wouldn’t want to have not had that time I learned so much back then, but I am still suffering the consequences of that to this day, some people can handle the highest highs and still be themselves but most I think, get lost there. Lost in the attention and the addictions
Anyways, your reaction to this song is one of the best
    Take care man
