I believe what Matt Mc said though, that it was almost a no-acting-required thing because the beauty of Rust’s character was all in his dialogue. But he sure damn understood how he couldn’t let his actor-ego interfere and for that he should be praised just as much as the writing.
They should do a season set during the period of time where Rust was in Alaska. Like there would be different actors playing the cops and being the main characters, then Rust is kind of like a side character that's consulted like twice throughout the season
Nothing like True Detective will ever exist again. It is a work of art, and McConaghey is a savant. Also, as much as I love Rust and Marty, I don't think they should return. The first season is a journey, not only involving the case but also the characters, and at the end of the season, that journey has been completed; there is real resolution. He's a Christian man who manages to play the most convincing, sceptic, elitist atheist. I agreed so much with the characters viewpoints, I was shocked when I realized he was actually a southern Christian in real life. The character is perhaps one of the best written characters of all time, and Matthew is just icing on the cake. TLDR: Rust and Matthew are polar opposites, yet both are aligned in harmony in the show.
Well, I think he sensed that the character was more than the summation of his professed beliefs, or lack of beliefs. They say every cynic is secretly a disappointed romantic. Rustin wasn't really a non-believer, he was angry. "God," if you will, wounded him beyond healing, and he wanted to hurt God back, and the only way to do that he could think of was to not believe. Not in God, not in humanity, not in any kind of meaning. But at the end of his story, he finally found meaning again, after letting go of what he thought of as himself. Because beyond his identity, beyond his pain and the memory of his lost loved ones, love was still there. I think McConaughey could get behind that. Something that the show's writer said in an interview is that there's no such thing as opposites, only symmetry. I think that applies here.
Just finished watching season one for possibly the twelfth time and it's still as mesmerizing and engrossing as it was when I saw it back in 2014. McConaughey's Rustin Cohle is easily one of the greatest characters ever to grace the screen. He was something else.

I just watched season one and it's the best tv show I've seen. The chemistry between Woody and Matt is outstanding and the eerieness of the setting and storyline is amazing.
Second series is heavily underrated. I mean it. For me it is a solid 7 maybe even 8. It is still superior to most of other quality series. The mistakes made in the second series were already present in the first one. Only because the case was focused on catching a serial killer it hold its copmosure. Biggest mistakes of the second one? Slow start and too much exposition through dialuge. This was present in the first series too. But because we always had the epicenter of the hunted murderrer we didnt have to care for complicated plot and the trillions of names. Second season is much more original take on the detective genre. First one is mostly a mediocre pulp story. The name true detective comes from pulp magazines look it up. Second season is much more a noirish investigation with the undefeatable conspiracy that ultimately deafets the heroes. And I don't know. Watching the 7th episode there is really no scene wasted everything is used properly and everything matters. However I believe that Nic had spread himself too thin with four main characters. They weren't unnecessary. All of them mattered and I loved the quick cuts between them in the 7th episode. I just thing that it was a much bigger challange then the first and ultimately too big of a bite. If the story had centered on the stolen diamonds from the beggining as the first series focused on the murders it would be much more tight and understandable. The story is there. The heavy atmosphere is there. It just is not perfectly executed as the first series was.
While Fukunaga's absence was definitely noticed in Season 2. Season 2 was not of the same quality entireley because it was missing Carey F. It was mostly because Nic was rushed by HBO president Michael Lombardo to push out a script in a few months , where, with season 1 Nic was working on, and bouncing around ideas since college/for the better part of a decade. Of which, the Michael Lombardo admitted the quality was pretty much his fault for rushing Season 2.
there were never be such thing as true detective s1 , will shall never see a character like rustin cohle, by far the most loving character and much far the most realistic performance i have ever seen from Matthew McConaughey
I just finished season 1 and my lord I haven’t seen anything this perfect since breaking bad . I wish the other two seasons were still the same characters. Woody was also phenomenal in this .
I like how Woody Harrelson played Marty, but honestly, McConaughey carried the SHIT out of this series. Only thing coming close what McConaughey did here was Marlon Brando in The Godfather
It was perfect casting: Matthew McConaughey _was_ Rustin Cohle. He deserved more than just a Best Actor nomination. Whoever voted for someone else shouldn't have been voting, because his was clearly the best performance that season.
i just saw this show at the end of 2023. i knew somewhere out there was a good show i haven't seen yet. but i didn't think ide stumble upon the best show ive ever seen. you know when you have a feeling like you're missing something? well f me im glad i finally found it lol i think i saw a fb reel of rust cohle, looked up what show it was gave it a shot and it was 100% up my ally!
Man true story amazing show I stumbled upon an episode half way through the series and thought it was the best damn movie I’ve ever seen didn’t realize it was a show when it ended I needed more for sure the writing was superb and acting was amazing need more of these guys
Don't get me wrong I love Breaking Bad and everything about it but hands down True Detective's 1st season coupled with this guy's performance was better than anything Breaking Bad Produced. Anything.
You really can’t even compare though since breaking bad is an overarching show while season 1 is an entirely separate entity from season 2. Quality over quantity in this case imo. Not to say that BB isn’t great
The character journey arc of Rust in S1's diegesis is one of the coolest transformations I've ever seen in my life - it's like watching a caterpillar morph into a neon coloured butterfly with gold foil wings and diamond eyes. Pure beauty and emotion ❤ God bless Matty!
True Detective season 1 was one of the most engaging tv shows ive ever watched.I watched all 8 episodes pretty much back to back.I picked up the blu ray when it got released and it just looks amazing.Matthew McConaughey is mesmerizing through out,and the writing from nic pizzolatto is brilliant.I would love to see more true detective, but i think fukunaga would have to return.
Single handedly the best season of any tv show ever produced. Nicks writing, Mathew and woody’s acting. I’d say season 3 is the second best tv season ever made. These guys touched something so beautiful
McConaughey's restraint early in the season is key, contrary to the instincts of an actor who plays in "short form" movies, compared to an 8 hour series. Amazing work!
I was going on a psychic meditation when i watched this season 1 of true detective, every fucking week i rewatch this show.. What a authentic and pure acting on screen, great Writing also... Even Bryan cranston confessed after winning emmy award for BB that Matthew deserved it.....
Marty was all feeling. All sensation. All addiction. Ruston was no feeling. No sensation. They were a perfect compliment to each other. Made great partners and one of the best seasons of television ever made.
That’s just who he appeared to be or thought himself to be. You can see his pain and addictions of booze/cigarettes. He also is so invested in being that hand of justice because he knows pain so well, and understands it in other people. You’ve gotta be an empath almost to be able to read people the way he did as well.
I disagree, Rust had feeling, had sensation, but he interpreted it just different than Marty, an obvious example to highlight is Rust says he can taste colors, its something called Synesthesia, Rust to me was just on a different wavelength of interpreting reality and what was real and what wasn't from his pov is up to interpretation.
Season one of true detective is some of the best t.v ever written. A great example of a long form movie, ive seen it 3 times and am building to watching it again.
Kieran Keddo-Powell man...imagine the experiences that made Rust adopt such a philosophy. Maybe even starting with his daughter's death. End the show on a bleak note. Last scene: Cohle's last days in Alaska, prepping his return to Louisiana to pay his debt.
True detective season 1 is the greatest season of anything ever. I've spent years convincing people to watch it and they always thank me afterwards. And I always tell them stop after season 1 lol
You’re a good man. Although, I never told anyone not to watch the other 2 seasons, I just tell them I can almost guarantee they won’t love them the same as the 1st.
I consider myself an armchair movie expert, I’ve seen pretty much every film and tv series that’s worth watching, and Matthew’s performance in True Detective is the best acting I have ever seen. Hands down.
I may be in the minority but I loved both seasons equally. The eerie, southern Louisiana gothic occult vibe of season one and the noir-ish urban/industrialized underbelly of LA's corruption from top to bottom in season two. Both were very different yet equally fresh and entertaining. I wish season two did better critically so we could get a season three set elsewhere with new characters again, maybe set somewhere in the northeast. The possibilities were endless. Oh well, at least we've still got Fargo going strong to fill the void.
OlGravyLegs I have wished Season 2 had come first. It would have been enjoyed more, without the comparison and expectations of One already out there. Then One would have followed and really blown everyone out.
I would have loved that it's just McConaughey and Harrelson just playing different charcters every season. I get that because they're movie actors they wouldn't want to get tied down to one show, but god damn that first season is as good as any movie out there, and is the kind of televison we don't get nowadays
I've often thought the best part of something we love, say, the weekend, is the anticipation...that it's all before us. In other words, it's the LOVING OF IT that's what we actually love. I've often thought while watching a show I love I almost DON'T want to watch it because it will end. I believe it would be a mistake to bring back Rust and Marty because it was SOOO good the first time it would somehow tarnish or diminish what they (and Pizzolato) did in the 1st TD. It's like taking a couple of bites of your absolute favorite food and then denying yourself from eating too much. You savor it and will always want/need more.
I think for season 3 it should take place in the '50s with a noir type feeling and bring back that dark, supernatural type atmosphere they had from season 1.
I think MC and WH, both were phenomenal in their roles...what was more interesting about MC role was his character honesty towards his job... Their roles were were believable, as they portray corrupt society we live in!
McConaughey's acting in this series was a gift of to all us viewers... a character to remember... thank you thank you thank you Would love to have heard thoughts about the long one take no cut biker "robbery" scene... totally far our.
Mathew's finest work ever - never really thought he could act like that
asheriko26 He was also good In Dallas buyers club, n actually won more awards for that movie than he did for True Detective

there were never be such thing as true detective s1 , will shall never see a character like rustin cohle, by far the most loving character and much far the most realistic performance i have ever seen from Matthew McConaughey
Well done Rust.....amazing imitation of Matthew McConaughey. I didn't know you were an actor too, I thought were only an astonishing detective
Haha 😁😁
The best performance I've ever seen in a TV series MY GOD!
I get emotional when I think of the first time I got to experience this masterpiece
Imagine if we had 3 seasons of Rust and Marty instead of new characters and locations each season
The greatest acting I ever seen was from this - absolutely incredible as we all now know.
The end of season one where he breaks down, omfg I cried like a little baby. He takes off his mask..
Matthew is simply unreal. He's excited to be interviewed and gets into it, unlike so many others.
It's been 2 years since that and I still hope to see him and Woody returning.
I just finished season 1 and my lord I haven’t seen anything this perfect since breaking bad . I wish the other two seasons were still the same characters. Woody was also phenomenal in this .
The season 1 was a masterpiece...the best serie that i ever seen
The most convincing and touching character I’ve ever seen
I like how Woody Harrelson played Marty, but honestly, McConaughey carried the SHIT out of this series. Only thing coming close what McConaughey did here was Marlon Brando in The Godfather
Don't forget Tony Soprano aka James Gandolfini...
It was perfect casting: Matthew McConaughey _was_ Rustin Cohle. He deserved more than just a Best Actor nomination. Whoever voted for someone else shouldn't have been voting, because his was clearly the best performance that season.
disagree, woody was phenominal
"You are like the Michael Jordan of being a sonofabitch."
My favorite line from Marty.
That was great. Also, "Let me tell you, you ain't great outside of parties either."
Agree, that character was just perfect for him and he took it and ran with it. Amazing.
Mcconaugheys performance in true detective was the best tv I’ve ever seen in my life. Period
I found Rust’s dialogue about death, religion, etc very comforting.
Darkness brings out the genius in many actors. McConaughey was maybe the best example of this
i just saw this show at the end of 2023. i knew somewhere out there was a good show i haven't seen yet. but i didn't think ide stumble upon the best show ive ever seen. you know when you have a feeling like you're missing something? well f me im glad i finally found it lol i think i saw a fb reel of rust cohle, looked up what show it was gave it a shot and it was 100% up my ally!
Anything.
Agreed.
I'm grateful we got to see both.
@ricky roach FAX
You really can’t even compare though since breaking bad is an overarching show while season 1 is an entirely separate entity from season 2. Quality over quantity in this case imo. Not to say that BB isn’t great
Breaking bad is the best tv show ever. I love true detective 1st season, it is masterpiece. But breaking bad is the best.
The character journey arc of Rust in S1's diegesis is one of the coolest transformations I've ever seen in my life - it's like watching a caterpillar morph into a neon coloured butterfly with gold foil wings and diamond eyes. Pure beauty and emotion ❤ God bless Matty!
Best single season of any show, any genre, ever!
Brilliant. Matthew and Woody no words. ❤ Their dialogues were just superb.
This is his finest work.... this is transcendent work.
True Detective season 1 has to be the best seasons ever, all because of Rusty Cohle.
Single handedly the best season of any tv show ever produced.
Nicks writing, Mathew and woody’s acting.
I’d say season 3 is the second best tv season ever made. These guys touched something so beautiful
I love Matthew's outfit it really is my kinda of style. 👀👏🏻😁
Hv u figure out this jacket?
Watching him break down his method for knocking out his scene for the interrogation room blew my mind. Not sure many people really absorbed that.
THAT PERFORMANCE WAS AMAZING .......I AM A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER AND NEVER WATCH COP SHOWS ....BUT THAT SEASON WAS OFF THE CHAIN .......
McConaughey's restraint early in the season is key, contrary to the instincts of an actor who plays in "short form" movies, compared to an 8 hour series. Amazing work!
Season 1 with Rust and Marty was the best TV I've ever seen hands down it's a dark story noir masterpiece
I'm not gonna lie, Matthew Mcconaughey playing Rustin Cohle gave me a mancrush for the dude. My god what an incredible performance and show.
Such a great show ! Watching it again now
They should do a series of Rust's adventures as an undercover agent in the world of narcotics.
Kieran Keddo-Powell
man...imagine the experiences that made Rust adopt such a philosophy. Maybe even starting with his daughter's death. End the show on a bleak note. Last scene: Cohle's last days in Alaska, prepping his return to Louisiana to pay his debt.
I wrote that for a project in college. “The Adventures of Rustin Cohle”.
A prequel to his story
I just watched the first season for the second time a month ago and I'm considering watching again right now!
Excellent wonderful amazing- fabulous acting and storyline. Loved Matthew and Woody in this together- one of the best tv series I’ve seen.
I'm a Sopranos guy. But the 1st season of True Detective is the greatest single season of television in history.
Before I found true detective I was obsessed with no country for old man, now I can't stop watching season 1 😬. A master piece .
I'm so impressed with TD series. Well done guys. Rusty is an epic character. Great job MMc.
I consider myself an armchair movie expert, I’ve seen pretty much every film and tv series that’s worth watching, and Matthew’s performance in True Detective is the best acting I have ever seen. Hands down.
Season 2 didn't bring anything to the table. Season 1, that was spectacular television. Honestly, one of the best.
we laugh and we cry but the actors method is insane how good their mental recall is.
Oh well, at least we've still got Fargo going strong to fill the void.
i reckon u've had a brick thrown at ur head lol
OlGravyLegs I have wished Season 2 had come first. It would have been enjoyed more, without the comparison and expectations of One already out there.
Then One would have followed and really blown everyone out.
Something in Upsate NY would be sweet.
There's no Fargo coming down the road, it may be stalled for good. That last season was pointless, just more Hollywood occult garbage.
I watch season one of True Detective, over and over again. It is just that good!
I would have loved that it's just McConaughey and Harrelson just playing different charcters every season. I get that because they're movie actors they wouldn't want to get tied down to one show, but god damn that first season is as good as any movie out there, and is the kind of televison we don't get nowadays
Ive seen the first Season 3 times.. and i think i will see it once a year. Matthew and Woody is absolutely terrific in their roles..
That performance made me a McConaughey fan. Greatest performance I personally have ever seen
I think for season 3 it should take place in the '50s with a noir type feeling and bring back that dark, supernatural type atmosphere they had from season 1.
Absolute stud. I am in awe of his performance in season 1
I think MC and WH, both were phenomenal in their roles...what was more interesting about MC role was his character honesty towards his job... Their roles were were believable, as they portray corrupt society we live in!
This man was born to act that character !.
“ they don’t even know the outside world exissssssss”
I watched this show in 2014
Its still been a great theatrical experience listening to this mad bastard
McConaughey's acting in this series was a gift of to all us viewers... a character to remember... thank you thank you thank you
Would love to have heard thoughts about the long one take no cut biker "robbery" scene... totally far our.
When I watched his season I was flat out amazed at the job he did. Never took him serious as an actor and after watching that became a fan.
Best thing I ever watched . Honestly .
