Hello. (Some background info) Back in the 2000-2010 timeframe, I operated/owned the second largest bison operation in Southwest Missouri. At one time I had 58 cows and three breeding bulls. My prize bull was named Black Kettle, at 3 he weighed in at 2190. My cows were all selected from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and North Dakota sales , they were either first or second place cows. My two favorites were Wachita ( from Oklahoma) and Saline (from Salina Kansas). We found that oversized balls were a great play toy for the calves. We also got with the street departments with the two local cities and picked the used street sweeper brushes and mounted them on sections of pipe anchored in the ground. They loved the brushes as they rotated on the pipe and helped remove they winter coats. (As a side benefit my daughter collected all he fur and sold it to a weaver for poundage). I really enjoy you videos and sense you enjoy the animals, I loved my herd and all the animals. All on them were named (I was teased by family as all are cattle ranchers- that you didn’t name you stock.) please keep up the great work and your enjoyable videos.

My folks were West Texas farmers, not cattle ranchers. But they always had 8-10 beef cows on the farm. They owned a registered Charolais bull named Ferdinand that stayed on a friend's cattle ranch (free of charge for services rendered). Dan had the 2- or 3-year-old steers slaughtered and sold them a half beef at a time. The heifer yearlings he sold at auction. He kept his cows where he wanted them with a knee-high single strand of electric fence. Anyone crossing the fence was in the habit of checking, before stepping over, for anyone near enough to give the fence a kick while you had a leg on each side. Mom and Dad didn't have to check. They raised 4 boys and none of us were that stupid, neither were their grandkids.

Dunbar is one big handsome man!! Can’t wait to see him play with his toy. Love your videos. Thank you for letting us in on your ranch to enjoy all the majestic bison. I used to ride and race horses but now I am bed bound. I miss that life so much being on the farm with all my animals. So now I enjoy you and your bison. Thank you.

I think some of Dunbar's fascination with the feed trough was that he could 'actually' hook it with his horns and it had some give. The noise was added incentive. Like dogs with a squeaky toy. Wrapping rubber tire around the barrel would do the trick. Could probably cut holes into the drum and mount the tire with bolts.

I knew what the shirt was when I first saw it. My son was South Carolina state welding champ in 2001-his senior year in high school-so I recognize welding equipment. I hope Dunbar enjoys his new toy and leaves your gates on the hinges and your feed troughs in one piece!

I am so happy to find your site. The bison has been my favorite animal since I was a little girl. Watching your videos is teaching me a lot about them. I would love to have a calf to raise, but we don’t have a strong fence or enough land. Your animals are beautiful and I love the calves. Dances With Wolves is one of my favorite movies,I’ve watched it many times. Thank you so much for sharing your videos. God bless you, and the best of luck with your business.

Bison are herd animals so you would need more than one calf for their welfare. I saw a lone Bison one time standing in a good field of grass just staring at a herd of cattle. The Bison was skinny as a rail. One of my brothers was driving across Texas at night on a two lane road. They came to a screeching stop when their headlights picked up a single Bison standing in the middle of the road. It had escaped and was apparently checking out the neighborhood. He said it was a lot thinner than he expected. I suspected it was probably also a loner. Many people do not understand a herd animal's need for companionship.

It just amazes me every time I see you in the pasture with them. Especially when you have your hand right in their face feeding range cubes. Such big, beautiful, powerful wild animals. But then again, it amazes my wife when I do the same with angus and hereford cows and bulls. Like you I am around the cattle constantly and they develop a small level of trust. Just like you have done with your bison. Working with animals and gaining that level of trust, its just a most wonderful and rewarding feeling. Never complete trust on our part or theirs, but just enough and thats just fine by me. I never push them to trust me or take advantage of any level of trust. I am sure you don't either. Dunbar will get with the barrel, just a matter of time. You will catch him in some video soon. I will be watching and waiting like everybody else. Stay healthy, stay safe.

What a great idea for a toy ! If he does not play with it he probably is smelling something that he is unsure of. Also animals are so smart, he has never seen something like this in a tree .If he does not play with it put it on the ground and see if he plays with it there .

Here's a thing to do with some of the motor oil. Hand tools, like rakes, and shovels are forever needing to be cleaned and oiled. My horticulture teacher used to keep a big (30" !) clay pot, filled with sharp sand mixed with dirty motor oil.
When you bring the tools back to the shed, you rinse off the worst of the mud, then stir the tools thru the sand to clean off everything else, AND put on a nice coating of oil.

A word of advice when mounting anything like that on a tree, it is helpful to take an old piece of tire and lay it on top of the branch and then put the chain over that. Maybe it want happen here but this prevents the weight bearing chain from cutting into the bark and eventually killing or damaging (or weakening) the limb. It is an extra step but will save some headaches down the line.

Many have had injuries trying to weld a barrell which had petroleum products in it. They had failed to realise that oil can form a combustible gas inside. The damn drum explodes due to welding heat. Always drain and fill with sand before welding. If possible keep one end completely open (no lid).

I am glad that your friend showed up. The drained barrel is basically a fuel air bomb. When you started cutting the oil would vaporize and become very combustible. After draining take the bungs out and fill the barrel to within an inch of the top with water then it is safer to cut. It is best to cut over half of the head out just next to the rim over half way around with a cold chisel. When cutting propane tanks it is better to pull the fittings and fill the tank with water also. I know a guy who torched an empty chem drum and the head blew out and broke both bones in his lower leg. The barrel was lying on the ground and his leg was in front of the head. Glad that you are safe, except for that bull bison. Hang the barrel long ways up and down and paint a bull's face on it. Then pour feed under it.

    • @charlesbduke7947
      @charlesbduke7947 4 роки тому +2

If it's a reusable propane tank , watch out for jellied propane. It forms when they refill the tank a number of times. It's a combination of propane and water, it's also the reason you should not allow the tank to lay on it's side when you're using it, the same applies to the little pony tanks.

I think he is going to like that. Maybe paint some black stripes on it so he can see it better. Remember, Bison are color blind. Im looking for some of those rubber "clown" barrels, they use in rodeos to throw in the pasture. We just have those heavy, plastic, 55 gallon, blue (food grade) cherry barrels, on the ground, around the pastures for them to knock around. We just put a few 1" to 2" rocks off the ground in them. They have to be replaced every now and then.( $4 ea) We have them in with our horses too. They like pushing them around. Want to have some fun... put one of those big blue excercise balls in there. (The xlarge ball) Toss it over the fence and bounce it off Dunbar. If he's in the mood, he'll chase that thing around the pasture for a long time. If the wind blows it, he'll chase it some more. It's funny to watch.

I grew up on the plains (no trees). We had these things made up for the cattle to scratch on. Picture a giant X(the base flat on the ground) with each of the four legs about ten feet long and a ten foot central pole sticking straight up(all made up of 4 inch well pipe). Then a heavy chain running from the top of the pole to the end of each leg. The cattle would scratch their backs and sides up against the chain. In the summer when the bugs got bad, you would wrap the chain with a sock with bug repellent soaked on it. Cattle would apply the repellent to themselves when they rubbed. You resoaked the sock every few days. It took very little time for the cattle to understand what the sock showing up meant. From the look of it, your trees are taking some damage from them rubbing against them.

Awesome! All animals benefit from enrichment. I would suggest for the toy's longevity (and the tree's) you might want to put some padding between the chain and the limb. There are specially made friction guards specifically to protect trees from chains and ropes, but you can totally just use stuff you've got lying around. For thinner ropes, split old garden hose is common but you'll need something more hefty for that chain. But a bit of rubber tire lining or anything like that would be good.

Example; Like padding that you could step on (whenever Toys- R- Us Toy Stores were still in business (such a rotten deal that there isn't anymore BIG TOY STORES AROUND ANYMORE, 😣 THEY HAD THESE "A, B, C, etc., LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET & ON PADS (about 3 ft.x 3 ft?) & LIKE PUZZLE PIECES THAT A CHILD COULD EASILY CONNECT on the ground IN THE BACK YARD or driveway. THE PADS WERE SOLD IN PACKS. Pretty cheap too! SOME JUST WERE PLAIN like black or pink, blue & IN DIFFERENT COLORS TOO. THESE GREAT SOFT PADS COULD BE ALSO BE PLACED SO YOU COULD SET A CHILD'S SIZED BLOW UP POOL ON TOP MAKING THE POOL BOTTOM SO NICE & SOFT ON CHILDRENS BOTTOMS & FEET & NOT HARD CONCRETE OR ON THE DIRT GROUND. ALSO, THEY COULD BE DUCK TAPPED AROUND THAT "TOY BARREL" YOU MADE & THAT WAY YOUR BISON WOULDN'T GET HURT. I DON'T LIKE TO BRING IT UP, BUT THAT RUSTY & THOSE HOLES LOOKED KINDA SHARP (?) I'M AN OLDER 62 YEAR OLD WOMEN & NOT SURE HOW TO EXPLAIN THIS, BUT SOMEBODY HOPEFULLY UNDERSTANDS WHAT I MEAN. ??? I THINK TOYS ARE GREAT IDEAS FOR THE BISON. HOW ABOUT WHAT FOOTBALL PLAYERS CHARGE INTO DURING PRACTICE. THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS RAM OR CHARGE INTO THESE LARGE PADDEDFRAMES ? GEE WIZ, ONCE AGAIN, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE CALLED, BUT ABOUT 2 OF THEM WOULD BE GREAT, DON'T YA THINK? PADDING IS THE ANSWER. I BET HARDWARE STORES OR SPORTING GOOD STORES HAVE RUBBER TYPE PADDING (?) GOOD LUCK DUSTY, YOUR ON THE RIGHT TRACK! I LOVE SEEING THE BISON, SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT THEY ARE AWESOME & THANK YOU AGAIN FOR POSTING THIS GREAT VIDEO! YOUR A GOOD WONDERFUL YOUNG MAN!! SINCERELY, CARRIE FROM CALIFORNIA! GOD BLESS YOU ALL & LOVE & PRAYERS TOO! ♥️😇♥️

My grandad had an employee killed trying to cut a drum to build a BBQ. The drum was empty but had motor oil in it. The top blew out and decapitated the guy. My grandfather who taught me a lot about mechanics told me the man should have filled the drum with water first. It fills the space and lessens the air/fuel vapor area in the drum. SAFETY FIRST! not being killed one time doesn't mean the next time won't kill you.

If Dunbar was very aggressive he would’ve attacked it right away because he’s cautious it’s a sign that he is more gentle which is good for a breeding Bull. You should put a few treats on top of it when it’s close by and he’ll start playing with it more and more a bit.

I think if you make more in the future use ball bearings for noise + scrap iron in barrel old tires around the barrel and drill bolt holes in the end tires and bolt 1 extra tire to each end so he doesn't bang the ends and destroy it as quick. You might try a battery operated noise machine of some kind or something with the bull grunts in it at first to get him interested in it.

You need cow brushes. Old car wash brushes set up in pastures, they help with flies and thistles.

I was extremely concerned when you said you were going to use a torch to cut into the barrel. I once watched a man do this very thing with a fresh oil barrel. He had started cutting the top out of the barrel and as the oil started to vaporize from the heat the barrel exploded with enough force to drive the barrel completely through a metal plywood roof, breaking a 2x6 rafter in the process. Luckily the man doing the cutting was not standing directly over the barrel at the moment it exploded, or he most certainly been killed. Instead he was knocked back about 20 feet into a tractor. The lesson was to never use a torch to cut into anything that has had a any kind of flammable material in it unless it has been thoroughly washed or even filled with water. Check youtube or google for Oil drum explosions. You must be living right my friend and we don't want to loose you.

The Restoration Machinist we generally know what was in the barrel previously and have the common damned sense to vent the barrel before cutting.
