Apple announced the all-new Final Cut Pro 10.8 in today's Apple Event that was all about the iPad Pro and iPad Air. The Final Cut Pro update includes the following:
- Enhance Light & Color Feature

like most apple updates they state most things as revolutionary, where i see them as evolutionary... great new features, but I don't see purchasing a new ipad yet. I'm more interested in the apps. When looking at the apps I'm not sure how great it was yet either. looking forward to seeing what others have to say. Apple could have got me if they had started to converge and bring more of the pro app experience to the ipad - eg use standard fcp plugins in ipad pro, similar for logic pro, etc... I've only created one video with the ipad version of fcp and it was wanting. I'll update when it's available and see if it changes things.
do you have a feeling for how soon this will be available? I'm in the southern hemisphere, so 'spring' is a touch vague for me.

I expect text-based-editing to appear at WWDC next month, alongside other groundbreaking AI advancements.
While Adobe's current version has room for improvement, I have high expectations that Apple will deliver a superior solution.

The fact that you can FINALLY use external drives and no need to import huge prores RAW files in to ipad is huge. givin ipad pro the editing power what it has in it for real use.

This was what kept me from using the iPad version. I’ll wait for the reviews to see it in practice first but it sounds like it should finally be good to go!

Unfortunately we need a bit more than external SSD support to get feature parity with the Mac. Can we roundtrip and if yes, what about plugins, templates or luts?
@@Nietzman For me i do proress RAW to proress 4444 convert in ipad, then colour correct it in resolve 19. Also in ipad.
Whoaaaa okay, renaming corrections is sweet (something we should've had a long time ago) but that quick copying of effects is so huge. That's going to speed up my workflow so much more. Great run down, Matthew!

Hi, well still waiting for the full release notes, but looking at what Resolve is doing every update and Apple.. Does Apple still want to keep the name Pro in FCP??? If these are the only updates, well it feels like a bad joke....
I hear you. And yes, Apple has a lot of ground to cover to catch up, but there are some features they simply won’t pursue. Unless they release Final Cut Studio… 🤔

My pleasure! I know it's a little quick and dirty with a livestream and an Ecamm-recorded video but most of the info is in there. I did miss that there's a new button in the UI for turning the scrolling timeline on/off. Posted about that on X. And of course the one week I'm out of the country - that's the week Apple releases a "big" update to FCP. Of course.
Christ… I just want auto-captions… I have to round-trip everything from a PRO SOFTWARE through CapCut just to get captions.
Renaming layers isn’t a feature; it’s a mistake that’s taken them a decade to correct.
Utterly ridiculous.
If you haven't submitted feedback within the Final Cut Pro app to Apple directly, I highly recommend doing so. It's the best tool we have (next to perhaps starting a YT channel and amassing 30k subs and talking about desired features there) to let Apple know what features are most important to us.

Magic mask?
Separation from background without empty frame? With camera movement.
Instead, effects can be renamed. Thank you Apple, a great innovative company.
Chinese cap cut sometimes has more innovations than fcpx.
I really love this program.
I want it to become better and correspond to the modern world.
I think that's going to be kind of standard for Apple when we're talking about 10.8, 10.9 ... they probably won't do something earth-shattering until FCP 11 and then after that we'll see minor-ish updates in 11.1, 11.2, etc.
Let's just all remember, though... the switch to Apple Silicon was earth-shattering and we've all benefitted greatly from it. They'll get caught up with FCP but certainly not as soon as we'd all like.
I agree with you. I have kind of given up on FCPX and we are starting to shift to Davinci. The cut page in Davinci sucks but they mentioned at their NAB announcement that they will dedicate more resources to it. I hope Davinci simply copies CapCut or FCPX. Plus add in more AI like Premiere and CapCut though Davinci already has a lot of great AI tools. Plus Davinci needs to improve their multicam. We still use FCPX for fast turnaround projects but for complex projects we are using Davinci. Davinci is much more responsive and faster to implement than FCPX. Just a note, I think Premiere has lots of innovation on the AI front but their subscription model and their bugginess makes them a no go for me.

apple should feel some shame that 6 months later and a whole version later all you can do it rename layers,( which was a need for sure) but thats bare minimum
They have build FCPX to be open in the FX area, so if there's a plugin that does something, they won't release anything for that. Right now, CapCut has more AI and more interesting features than any other editor. Davinci Resolve and premiere are moving along really well, Premiere will get firefly inside. Davinci already does so much (transcribing, auto subtitles, AI powered masking).
Final Cut Pro is lagging now a lot on really important features most editors are using nowadays.

I really don’t care at all fcp for ipad.
I like it a lot but I'm just too slow with it compared to the Mac version. I've tried it with the Magic Keyboard, just the iPad and Apple Pencil ... it's really fun to use but as soon as I get to the point where I need to make audio crossfades it's a CHORE.

How does 'Smooth Slo-Mo' differ from Optical Flow? Aren't they doing the same thing? Do you think the new option is the replacement for Optical Flow or just a renaming? I haven't been able to download 10.8 so I can't check it out yet.
I have a feeling it's a new, separate feature and it will use the principles of optical flow but with much better machine learning... it may not work perfectly with all footage but I have to think it will look pretty dang good compared to optical flow for this specific use case.

Fcpx is long overdue for an audio mixer update.
I was really looking forward to audio timline updates, and audio mixers, levels for audio roles and exporting music cue sheets and some audio updates.

More boring garbage for this program. Such a shame because it runs so smooth but getting so far behind with features it’s almost unusable anymore. Where’s the ai rotoscoping (tired of paying motion vfx for things that are standard in other software at this point). How about auto ducking for audio, or better yet a dedicated mixing window for audio and plugins
We've been asking for those features for years and with Apple dropping 10.8 today after only doing 10.7.1 since 10.7 was released, we're all hoping version 11 comes with an updated UI and all of the features we've all been asking for for years.
Very cool. I just started using FCP last December. The one place I feel FCP is weak is the time code. Seems to me, from the info I've been watching if your using a time code generator and syncing it through the mic jack, you would need something like Davinci to decode it first.
Thank you for releasing this into a bite size video. I am however pretty let down by FCPX yet again with these updates, it just feels like they are playing catch up with Premiere and Resolve still. It's getting harder and harder for me to leave Premiere and their awful pricing when this is what I'm getting...

The slow mo feature is already there, it's called Optical Flow.
I have a feeling this will take that to the next level, though. Optical Flow can be a little... off sometimes.
Renaming and dragging effects in / from the inspector I've missed very much. As it is a default feature in Premiere Pro since at least 10-15 years ... finally!
Custom name to Color Correction, is not HUGE it's about freaken time!
Haha - yeah, there's a lot of those kinds of updates that need to be done. Hopefully the team is plowing through that list and knocking out the obvious updates that all of us have been asking for for years.

The fact that they keep skipping over simple user friendly features like ‘modular windows’ in 2024 is insane. I’m happy about the copy paste attributes though.
My guess since FCP has already had color enhancement and optical flow slow-mo, my hunch these are more "AIish" but they don't want to call it that. It really does look like Apple is finally pursuing "catch up" more aggressively and I suspect over the next year or two development is going to look more competitive again. Also seems that iPad Pro is beginning to compete with laptops so they're being a bit more aggressive with FCP there as well. Final Cut Camera is pushing the unique advantages of an Ecosystem for post workflows and that's a good sign. There's much more work to be done but it's truly an "I ain't dead" moment. I can be optimistic again. I really like that they're pushing the Pro Apps ecosystem again and they're motivated by iPad, Desktop integration.

i had a MAJOR bug doing tracking on the main video in a Vertical Video. Lift the video out of the main timeline and it's fine.
Main thing I’m looking for is the fix to the bug that prevents shared xml files from opening. I was wondering why a small update didn’t come out when the issue was first identified, I guess they may have been bundling it together with 10.8
Good to know - I haven't encountered that bug since I'm not really using XMLs in my workflow. Be sure to submit feedback through Final Cut Pro directly to the FCP team - if enough of us do it I think it does have an impact.

The great part is someone in the Apple Forum was able to identify the choking point in the code, so we at least have a temporary work around until the fix comes.
Release says that FCP for iPad will be out in the spring, but it doesn't say anything about when10.8 will be out. Does that mean it is coming out imminently?
I think it’ll be early next week. I’m guessing Tuesday which is typical - FCP updates usually come out on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
on the new ipad, can we hook up a mouse?
I don’t believe so. I think a mouse only works when it’s connected to a Mac and you’re using your iPad alongside it.
That being said, the trackpad on the Magic Keyboard accessory does connect to the iPad and you can use the trackpad like you do on a MacBook.
I use optical flow in resolve almost all the time, glad you guys are getting that feature. You’re gonna love it
FCPX has had optical flow for some time now. It is kind of hidden though haha. I'll be curious to see how this smooth slo mo works though.
I think this will be a significant improvement on the already existing Optical Flow feature.
Optical flow has been around in FCP and Motion for a long, long time; even the morph transition called "Flow" is probably 5 years old.

i love how those that moved on from fcp, still pop in to complain about fcp updates lol! Anyways, to me, finding missing plugins in the index is HUUUGE. i just went through the process of getting a new computer and opening up an older project and trying to figure out what plugins were missing from new computer, so I could install on my new system. this would have made it so much easier to quickly find those.

when will they allow trimming of multiple clips at once like in premiere.
I have used FCPX for over 10 years, 6 of them professionally and it falls further and further behind with every update! Such a shame, no text based editing, no AI multicam assist, no auto captions, no object removal. These are all features I can use with there competitors, they need to do better as more and more professionals migrate. I am only using it because my main clients does and we can easily share libraries! Are apple just trying to cater to the consumer market and content creators, whilst leaving Resolve for the professionals?

Amused by the comments of what people waaannnnntttt instead of appreciating what a powerful tool they have. Premier is great - but it has its drawbacks & I hate subscriptions. For the investment and the speed & stability FCP does a great job.
I suspect the minimal updates implies they have been working on a complete new version that will likely be awesome.

Is there really no video to text / automatic subtitle or captioning support, still? Man.. it is honestly kind of pathetic from the company who has had voice assistant for going on, how many years. It is the #1 feature causing me pain and it has been on multiple other NLEs now for over a year.. Such an incredibly useful feature for so many productions. Beyond disappointed..

I switched a half year ago to DVR it wasn’t that easy especially for my editing style but now I am 95 % back on track and I don’t look back. Audio transcription, magic mask, a sweet audio suite in Fairlight, pancake timeline ❤❤ I only feel sorry for apple which killed FCPX with ignoring the competition and their (former) loyal users…but I always hope fcpx will get some more love from apple and I can switch back but for now I need to stay with DVR ❤
Why not do both? Final Cut is much faster for a rough cut with the magnetic timeline, and Resolve is way better for post production and effects. Why not start in Final Cut and finish with the Resolve suite?

Wow. Still no transcription or speech to text? The way the new Resolve is doing it matches my workflow. Often I will need to edit based on a transcript. Sigh
How well does Resolve do it? Is it really reliable and dependable? I've never used it so I'm genuinely curious how well executed the feature is.
@@matthewTobrien It's in beta I believe and I have never tried it but from the videos you can find dialog and send it to the timeline. You can also edit in the timeline by removing words and pauses an it will update. It looks amazing! Right now, I create a transcript with Rev and use the timecode to find it in the clip in FCP.

You won't have to pay extra for FCP for Mac but if you don't subscribe to FCP for iPad you'll have to pay $4.99 per month or $49 per year to subscribe to the app. Final Cut Camera app is free.
I been using FCP from version 1...in 2015 i switched to Davinci becuse of the forced updates and it did not work on PC....I haven't looked back...im Apple free

pretty underwhelming updates ... oh well anyways after I had / have to use Premiere Pro for several weeks now ... basically since november last year ... i still prefere FCP cuz i'm much faster and have my color workflow pretty much finest in FCP (color finale and filmconvert nitrate help ) but Text based editing, transcription and even audio mixing is pretty bad in FCP even with workarounds ans stuff
That's been the common refrain in the comments from pros like you who really want to see those three key features added ASAP. I'm right there with you. Glad this wasn't 10.7.2, though - hopefully jumping this quickly to 10.8 means that 10.9 and 11 are gonna be here sooner than we expected.

Audio issues still unaddressed. Few plugins and every tweak the waves are written alll over again. Slow and with external plugins fcpx crushes. Nightmare

@@matthewTobrien that’s fair but after using it for a year, I finally have my adobe skill level at a place where I can work reasonably efficiently. I don’t know how easily I’ll be able to jump into Final Cut Pro and pick that up without losing time. A lot of time. Also, what do I replace Photoshop with?
@@coffeeandchocolategamesReplace Photoshop with Affinity, and get a license quick before the suite goes subscription, they just got bought by Canva, but for now the apps are one time purchase, and they are great.

Same here. I feel the "is a little wonky" sentiment rings true with a lot of the cooler features BMD and Adobe release in their apps. When the BMD camera app failed while recording for 30-ish mins I decided I couldn't trust it for my content so this Final Cut Camera app is going to be terrific for the work I'm doing (I just hope they add stills and not just video).
@@matthewTobrien I didn't even think about stills but yes! Btw I experienced the same issue. It would stop rolling about 30 seconds into recording.

Nothing really big. It’s a shame a so called professional editing software that doesn’t have auto transcribe/caption, a decent background removing, a high quality image enhancing (noise reduction), improved image stabilization, etc… in 2024!!!

If I was a UA-camr, or Wedding Videos, or Social Media in general I would use Final Cut, if I made indie films, or feature films in general I’d use Resolve. Resolve is a nightmare for a quick and casual video, but Final Cut is a nightmare for a huge project.
I hate how they made final cut on ipad look and feel different from final cut on mac, i think its stupid
I have to imagine FCP for Mac will get a visual overhaul to get it closer to the look of FCP for iPad. They're not way off in my experience using them both but definitely slightly different. I really, really want to use FCP for iPad more but there are just a few things still missing that make it difficult.

That was my first thought. If slack can create a transcript to a 40 min video accurately with ease, why the heck are we still waiting for this? I love FCP but come on!
I use speech to text all the time, some for extended transcriptions.
