This was 1996 at the US Nationals Arabian Horse show in Louisville Kentucky.. I was there as both an exhibitor (western pl and native costume and was an IAHA licensed judge at that time) and spectator. I have to say that I knew Gary Ferguson (rider and trainer in the video) back then- even rode a few horses he had for sale looking for my son and other friends looking to buy and his horses were always well cared for and some of the best reiners I ever sat up on. Yes, he won the class. It was far more impressive in person than this video shows. The slides were awesome the spins great lead changes effortless and he smile and had a cigarette dangling from his lips and a rough unshaven look to play the motorcycle rider look and a smile at the end that lit the arena when he took that cigarette (unlit and gave that last hand gesture. I've never seen a more "fun freestyle performance before or since- cute well executed yes, but no wheres close to as fun to watch and feel you are a part of the performance.. Music was a perfect choice and turn up your volume to watch it because it was played loudly that night and it ROCKED! Those reins were useless (may as well as been bridle-less and this horse had been ridden that way also. He scored two perfect 80's and one judge decide a perfect score wasn't enough and gave him a 1000. The whole PACKED arena at the state fair grounds went crazy..

Yup - - I was there, too, and I don't think I've ever had that much fun at a horse show. It was awesome!!! The whole performance was impressive, creative and the ... crowd... went... WIIIILLLLLDDDDD!!!! Best Reining Freestyle ever.

Only those who don't know them misunderstand them. I have had Arabians for 45 years. They are versatile, intelligent and very people oriented. Not another breed can compare...

Classic! That takes me back to a beautiful Arabian that my dad brought home back in 1975. So lean and so strong. Thanks Tami.

THAT by far was the coolest, reminded me of my sweet DARODAN.... check out results from 1975 -76 Teal Markley
I have shown many horses and many breeds since then... AND THAT WAS THE MOST ENTERTAINING EVER...hats off to you!

These are the types of classes that bring people to our breed. It's a shame that people haven't figured that out by now. Classes like this are why we continue to show on the open circuits.

As an arabian owner who shows in H/J and Dressage, I expected to be horrified by this clip, but I am pretty impressed. It looks like the rider is using mostly natural aids, and not hampering the horse with the giant handlebar "prop". I had heard that reining (which I know little about) utilizes a dressage theory, must now start researching....

Lisa, I rode Dressage in college and can tell you that Dressage and Reining have more in common than Dressage and say, H/J. Many of the "moves" are the similar but speed and execution make the difference. I heard rumors that they had a time getting the handlebars fixed to the saddle, but but worked. What level and where do you ride? I am a fan of several Arab dressage horses...

While he does ride from his seat and legs, you can see how tight the reins get when he tries to do complicated manuveurs. I'm just saying it would have been better the reins had been longer, or even if they had been tied to the saddle. As i said, the fact that this horses isn't dragging his nose on the ground, and stays calm through the whole routine shows alot for this horse, the rider and the sport. I just think that training for less rein use would make it a better routine.

@aqhalover1995 I have, and it goes quite well. My hunter pleasure/sport horse Arabian has beaten Paints and Quarter Horses at open shows with judges who are biased against Arabians, in western pleasure. Don't come watch a video with a title that says ARABIAN just to hate.

No actually, I have seen some great trainers whom I'd not hesitate to send my own horse to for training, or recommend for a friend. BTW, we LOVE our guns. Buy 'em at Wal-Mart.

My Arabs have beaten plenty of stock horses in open shows. A good horse is a good horse - regardless of the breed.

I do both english and western riding... it is really stupid how everyone fights about whether or not Arabs should do this style/discipline or that... Arabians are one of the most versatile and smart breed there is pretty much. Why can't we all just get along based on the fact that we love this commonly misunderstood breed?

  • @RebelionGlory

  • @hawaiianpony

LOL all you English riders CRACK me up. Seriously? Arabs can do Western better than most stock horses can. I really wish English riders would get in the western saddle more often to realize it's just as hard work as their precious fancy dancy english.

I thought this was a really excellent example of what the sport can be and how much fun horse showing can be, but i hate that so much of what that guy did relied on the reins. I can do that pattern on my horse bridleless, it just makes me sad that the horse has no training to go bridleless. It would have mad ehtat run that much better if it had been bridleless or even if the reins had been tied to the saddle horn. Still a very neat idea for reining and obviously the horse has had good care.

  • @jewellsmom

Why? That was a good ride with a good rider! Feel sorry for those with their heads tied down with martingales for extended periods of time so they can't un-kink their necks if they want to. I don't like most horse shows. This one seemed to be creatively "natural" for the horse.

  • @LuvMitch247

  • @jewellsmom
    @jewellsmom 12 років тому

That's just awful!! And the point of that was.........? There are so many so-called "trainers" that have no business being around horses. They need a compassion check!
