    One reason I follow the Lockwoods is they are not always showing the touristy and “nice” places whatever country they visit. We see that a lot already. It takes guts to visit these rather dangerous and poor areas. It is interesting and informational in terms of learning different cultures. Kudos to you guys! Stay safe! I really wish you all the best and more success on your channel!❤

    This is basically a joke, I live just south of San Francisco and between San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond, and San Jose I see much worse here, the neighborhood looked pretty nice, I mean what kind of dangerous ghettos have fine food restaurants and art galleries? Seriously

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  10 місяців тому

      Well it doesn’t sound like you watched the episode… not sure where the fine restaurants came from but certainly the Maboneng parts are hip and trendy. As far as it being a joke, we’d say no, since locals and online guidance around Yeoville concur on the nature of safety. We even asked our driver on the way there if those concerns were legitimate amongst locals, and he said they absolutely were. And as far as making a comparison with San Francisco and Oakland, it’s certainly not difficult to convince anyone that you live in a very dangerous part of the world. The fact that it’s part of the United States means absolutely nothing… In our travel experience, some of the most dangerous places on the planet are in the US.

      @@AlwaysBeChanging I'm a South African yes there is crime in parts of yeoville and hillbrow but normally at night or dodgy quiet places like any other big city, but maboneng is one of many safer places for tourist...I don't understand why people assume because it's an African city ( and they've never been here) it has to be extremely dangerous than where they from.

    It isn't just Melrose Arch that isn't necessarily affected by load shedding. Most hotels, malls, shopping centres etc will have generators or inverters. That's why you don't experience it there. Most small businesses and non franchise or independent restaurants don't have that back up. It's why where you were in Maboneng they probably didn't have. It's mostly independent restaurants and small businesses. Most big businesses, shopping malls and franchise restaurants or fast food places like Nandos, McDonalds, KFC and the more sit down restaurants in malls and shopping centres have back ups. The flickering you see is when it's switching over to the generator or back up source.

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  10 місяців тому

      We experienced load shedding every evening at the Marriott in Melrose Arch. But they did have generators so it took about one to two minutes for power to come back on. And then we think it also goes off in the middle of the night as well because the a/c would feel like it’s off for a while while we were sleeping.

    • @AlwaysBeChanging

      @@AlwaysBeChanging Correct. What I meant to say was that it doesn't affect you as much when there's a generator or inverter. 😊 So yes there's still load shedding but won't feel the effects due to the back ups. In some hotels, they may have batteries with inverters which are an instant switch over versus a diesel generator. So you may feel some areas don't get at all but it isn't so. It's just that those hotels or businesses have an awesome back up system. 😊 Enjoy your travels.

    Thank you soooo much for presenting what part of the inner city of Johannesburg looks like. A few things I would need to point out which can kind of mislead some people is that Yeoville and Mabs (Maboneng) are two different neighborhoods, despite the proximity. Similarly, while I believe it is beautiful that you made an effort to integrate the use of indigenous South African languages it is imperative to specify which one it is, the use of the "clicking sound language" is generic and may be regarded as rather offensive due to the fact that there are several variances such as languages that the Khoi and San speak. The language you are referring to is Xhosa pronounced Qho-suh. I mean no offense and just wanted to help anyone who may want to visit in future by clarifying how we can prohibit cultural essentialism which may come off as ignorant. I hope this helps out and that you all enjoyed your stay, thank you for a beautiful video once again :)

    Upscale neighborhoods get little to no power cuts and if your neighborhood is near an industrial area they get little to no power cuts and also in upscale neighborhoods there is a private/public partnership with the city to get more power sources like solar, etc. so upscale neighborhoods are less dependent on the national grid of which is the problem. You will see this too in major neighborhoods in cape town and estates across the country.

      We did notice there was less load shedding in some areas than others. And we didn’t experience any load shedding at our upscale hotel in Cape Town.

      @AlwaysBeChanging Perhaps they have generators or inverters. We have an inverter battery system at home and don't really experience loadshedding anymore.

      It's more the fact that large businesses and "upscale" neighborhoods have generators and inverters. It doesn't mean they don't have load shedding. They do. They just have back ups.

      The great thing is that it doesn’t feel like a hardship for them. It’s a normal part of life that doesn’t seem to affect their business or moods.

    Going to the poor areas doesnt sound safe actually.. everytime I go to Manila, I would never go to the poor areas.. just be careful guys. Pick pockets are sometimes just around the corner.

      We wouldn’t have gone, especially with kids, if we didn’t have a great local guide. In all honesty, the Maboneng precinct we were in is the much nicer side of Yeoville, so we prob would have been fine regardless. 👍🏼

      @@AlwaysBeChangingthat’s great! I sometimes travel solo. As a female, I’ve been discouraged going to Turkey, Morocco, and such places alone. I am so glad I don’t listen to nonsense because I’ve never once had an issue, even at night. The key is to be in the moment, be smart, trust my instinct, keep my belongings inside my bag (including my cell phone), only wear my travel watch & jewelry (both inexpensive looking), always know (or pretend to) where I’m going, and blend in as much as possible… like a local!
