    I work in government and we unfortunately can't do this with people. It's one of many reasons why just about every govt agency is inefficient. Once someone is hired it's often hard to fire them no matter how bad they are at their job. This then creates a work environment where good employees don't want to stay and pick up the slack of the bad employees so you end up with an office of mostly bad employees. This isn't the case in every single govt agency of course but it is true for most of them.

      Once you let someone get away with something others will follow. Before owning my business I wondered by every boss was a jerk why not be nice? Well now I know because you give them an inch and they take a mile But I’m not like that when I work for someone. Like my last job if owner wasn’t at the shop I would call him to see what he wants me to do and when he would get back to the shop he would yell at the other guys because they wouldn’t do anything. The guy I worked next to said “see how he treats me? the owner doesn’t yell at you”. I said remember when I told you why don’t you call the owner to see what he wants you to do and you said you don’t have a cell phone and I said use the shop phone? Well if you called him like I said then you wouldn’t get yelled at. The owner said to me the one day I appreciate you keeping busy idk why the other guys don’t. I said well at the end of the day I have to go to work every day so in my head I want to make as much money as I can in the time I’m working and all I have to do is do what I’m paid to do, do a good job, show up every day and keep learning. I’ve told so many people this but nobody listens. I’ve told employees if u learned more and get more productive I could easily double ur pay but nope! I told one guy I hired if ur on time every day I’ll pay you 5 bucks more per hour but nope can’t do that and this same guy complained about not making enough money I said u worked 30 hours last week get to work on time get ur 40 hours and if u want overtime ask me! He said I would work tomorrow (Saturday) but we’re caught up I said you can work tomorrow I want the floors swept, garbage out and straighten up a bit shouldn’t take more then 3 hours and I’ll pay u for the full day but he didn’t want to then the next week he asked to borrow $100 I said no need for that stay late and paint the waiting room (it’s small like 8ft x 8ft room) it’s ready for paint just take the chairs out and I’ll give u $100 it will take you maybe 45 minutes but nope. Another guy who liked to spend his money partying would always need to borrow money even though he has like no bills just an apartment and normal bills like car insurance, cellphone makes 1000 bucks a week I’m paying him more money then he’s ever made in his life he was making $13.50 per hour less 5 years ago and he thought he was making big money but he’s broke by Monday all the time I told him one day hey I have some massive expenses I just paid so don’t blow all ur money this weekend you need to be smart because I can’t afford to loan you money for the next month well Tuesday he asks to borrow 300 bucks because he accidentally spent it because he didn’t realize he set it aside for rent he thought it was extra money lol and I said like I told you on Friday I can’t help you I’m not sure why you would spend money like that after I told you I can’t help you. He said I only have like 7 dollars till pay day so I gave 20 bucks I had on me and brought him $100 the next day and said don’t be a fool. He paid me back on Thursday and then Monday he asks to borrow money again so I say dude you didn’t ask to borrow money for 2 months then last week when I tell you to save ur money because it’s a bad time for me to be loaning out money and now it’s every week. So I said here’s the $120 you paid me back on Thursday keep it you don’t need to pay me back but now I can’t help you again this month. Next week he asks again and said sorry I know you said its a bad time. I said log into ur checking account I don’t believe ur broke, he longs in and I see a few transactions totaling $600 bucks for Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday and they were for the bar I said I’m sorry too I can’t help you. I told you this is a bad time and you spent 600 bucks at the bar? Many people don’t make 600 a week and you spent that at the bar so u gotta figure it out on ur own. Then I heard him on the phone saying he can’t come out tonight and he actually stopped drinking

    I really would like to see a video on how this can be used during the current job market where it is very difficult to find employees and the only ones that you can get are the unproductive ones so it seems to breed a environment of people being resentful of each other but you have to get the work done.. this is very true in foodservice and retail at this moment.

      management and company is accepting the work that is being given because it's better than nobody doing anything so we are told to accept whatever is going on until hopefully somebody will apply to the job they can do a better job at that point but to have issues with what you're getting now is seen as being unreasonable and inflexible.
      Really looking for advice or thoughts here.

      Yes also, if you coach them, they quit. If you were to say to someone in the current market, “go home, get yourself ready to work or I’ll find someone who will.” They just don’t come back. 😭 I very kindly reminded an employee about their dress code violation for the 3rd time in a week and told them, I will have to give you a written warning, and she quit on the spot 😮

      One way to go about it in a tough employee market, is to nicely tell the employee of his shortcomings the first time. The second time seat down with them and tell them that: I value your work with the company and I need you to be the part of the team, but you continue to do this.
      And let him/her sign the Official warning form, where it says that they will get fired next time.
      Works like magic.

    I've seen these methods used. It may or may not work on an individual, but creates fear, distrust and diminishes loyalty in the rest of the team.
    Make the expectations clear and measurable where possible. Track the results and coach, coach, coach.

    Spot on. As a adhs Person, I've been late practically all my life. But I've always made sure to make up for it and deliver value far in excess of what I do fail to bring to the table. I've learned that the clock is ticking differently and i can leave satisfied with the speed and quality I ensure.
    My idiocy was to give similar tolerance out in *advance*, to think, 'ok, others got other flaws but everyone will strive to compensate for them'. Doesn't work like that and as said in the video, if you wanna keep your retirement funds, you cannot allow that. You can carry someone who has like a yearly down and a yearly high, but not someone who doesn't bother to have an up!

    Theres a mid ground to this. Do it from an unemotional standpoint. Be pragnatic and matter of fact like. Tell them the goals, tell them the consequences. Warn them if nothing changes, its grounds for termination. "Please dont put me in that position " youre essentially telling them theyre firing themself

    After all the dynamic I believe that we can coach a bit more rather than assume that the person will do their job, I will always hire a person with a lot of willingness

    I have a staff who is always late. She doesn’t follow basic commands nor do she adhere to basic training. I want to fire her sooooooo bad. I blame myself since her dad is my best friend and I hired her believing her dad when he said she’s good. I’ve been regretting it everyday. However, Her dad is a on my side when it comes up to disciplinary actions. It your statement is true, I will set a time frame for her to get it together, if she fails, then she’ll be terminated. Enough is enough.

      How did it go? Is she still working with you? I have a member of staff I want rid off and after getting her mummy to come in to have a word with me cause she was to scared to talk to me. I’ve tried to be a fair boss but she’s taking the piss now and I’m done with her bullshit!

    It’s more complicated than just firing underperforming employees. You have to give everyone a fair chance and allocate your team to their strengths within their roles if possible. If you just fire people this easily your workplace morale will be terrible

    One time, it’s a mistake. Two times it’s their fault and the third time it’s your fault as an owner boss. Above all else the mission is the goal, if someone cannot perform or be punctual you owe it to the team and the business to make the hard decision and replace that person.

    Being too soft it's one of the reasons stopping me from trying my own business, I'm a non confrontational person and i think employees will try to take advantage on me.

    This is a good tactic if you have a large pool of candidates. Our company has been having to hire international visa holders just to fill basic positions. We have been using the tactic mentioned above, and chances are that our replacement hire is just as bad or worse than the problem employee we got rid of.

    I agree to an extent, there’s absolutely times when this is needed but I have found this approach leads to the team seeing the leader as an asshole and ultimately builds distrust.

    When I opened my business I wanted to be the nice boss that will let my employee leave early once in a while with pay, if they have a doctors appointment pay them still, take off more holidays, give bonuses here and there and all that stuff but I found out why bosses don’t do that because employees don’t appreciate it they start to feel entitled and take advantage.

      Having the same challenge, we had no questions asked leave policy and some members started taking leaves on important release dates. That means when months of work is going to production, they are not present that day. It puts me in really bad position in front of my clients and takes other people to clean up their mess.
      Gonna change all that now.

      No that’s not the issue, but if the child keeps falling sick every week; we suggest you take permanent leave and take care of the child fulltime. Have more time with your family. We have a business to run.
      Imagine when your country is in a terrorist attack and your military says they are on holiday today? It’s same in almost every critical part of business. A terrorist attack for military holds same significance as a bug report on software release date.
      It’s not wise to risk your own business again and again if someone’s child keeps falling sick, it’s unfortunate, we have sympathy but we gotta run a business man. That’s how world works.

    My last supervisor avoided employee issues and tried to make lateral employees deal with eachother. Also the manager didnt have any good ideas but put down good ideas..sometimes its the manager that needs to be fired because they are the lazy one

    Most of time this issue arises because the owner or the executive is the one not performing. Owners and executives love to take excessive vacations and work half days. They create the culture a non-performance.

      That’s quite a broad, general statement. Maybe that applies to “corporate America”? But we work with small business owners every day, over 40 industries. A lot of owners haven’t been able to take a vacation because the business is so reliant on them.

    what about the people who get put into a position due to appeasing a certain set of people and they don't meet the full job description and cannot do the full job due to physical demands but yet the people who can suffer. sounds like people are trying to appease to the public without understanding. i have a female who refuses/cant lift heavy parts and in turn forces me to do so on every job but yet she gets paid the same. same employee has an earpiece and stays on the phone or is listening to music and when teaching always say says "sorry what is it?: as if I'm supposed to cater. not saying said female doesn't fit in but not for the job. I feel as if said person could fit in other roles within then company but not for the job she is in. I have taken 4 days of my own paid time off in the past 3 months because I physically cannot do the jobs of the people around me and it an issue, but in production numbers are seen not not work put into.

    My staff complains because they have to do their jobs and blame the company for wanting to make money and not caring about them. I spent 6 months trying to build rapport and empathize and be a good leader and help out when they got behind. It isn’t working and it’s worse than when I got there. Soft and compassionate didn’t work, I guess I need to move into being a dick that I didn’t want to have to be.

      When I was in a non-leadership role, I used to hate my general manager because he was very strict.
      As I climb I understand where his anxiety was coming from.
      If a leader can not discipline their employees to do their jobs, then they will have to clean up the mess of those below them.

    Some employers keep toxic people because that person has been loyal to them, and sometimes this is because that person knows nonone else wants them. You lose good people that way. You talked about low production but gave tardiness and sick kids as examples of that. That's not production. I wouldn't work for you.

      Bingo. At my last job so many people (including me) left because of a specific narcissistic co worker. The boss wouldn’t do anything about it since not only was his business severely understaffed, but she already knew how to do her job so he would just tolerate her.

    Upper management can NOT hear the voices of those who work hard!! What do we do!? Just find another job? The job is good IF they lazy workers would pick it up! We have one person who has been there for FOUR years and STILL doesn't know the basics!? My fourth year was LAST YEAR and I EONS beyond where he is! I swear, maybe if someone brings a weapon into the building, they'll start listening?

    I'm 61 and was raised that you do what you're boss tells you to do if it's reasonable (which is most things) I see so many young people (many ,not all) in retail for example, that act like you're being a pain for asking for help. A few weeks ago I was in Walmart and I wanted some cologne, so I asked this young gal if she would unlock the case. As she's unlocking it I said "It's a shame you have to lock this stuff up" I watched her litterly roll her eyes like something I said was moronic! I almost went to her manager but I didn't (She could've had a baby at home, and babies are expensive) even though she's a royal bitch I didn't want the baby to pay for mommy losing her job! I wonder if someone treated her grandpa like that, would it bother her. Maybe when it comes to recruiting they're looking at the wrong demographics!

    Completely disagree with this opinion. At my current job, the project engineer with kids who is always late, does most of the work. But the engineers who show up on time, most of the day they sit idle with little to do. Getting the job done means meeting your deadline without burnout. If I fired any of my employees, it would cost me $30k to retrain an engineer to do their job. I dont care if they are late as long as they get the job done.

      @@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment the consequence will be that he will have one burnt out high performer and no backup. idle workers should be replaced but he needs to first look at how the workplace is structured its possible the work is centered around one over performing bottleneck and all the idle engineers have to wait for his work to get done.
      also you gotta look at whether the engineer's job description is actually to be available to the high performer, which would require them to be idle a lot. and change that.

    I’m going to be honest. This video is terrible for being a good leader. Fine for being a manager though. Based on what you’ve said in this video alone I see nothing but a manager here. You aren’t a leader. People don’t respect you they fear your rule. Always always always have empathy. NO MATTER WHAT. As soon as you lose your empathy you’ve lost your entire team. People are no longer there to help you with your goals and vision they’re there for a paycheck and nothing more because you bring nothing but misery to them.

      You’re a stranger on the internet and probably don’t care about my opinion, so I hesitate to say this. However, I don’t think he’s saying lack empathy; I think he’s saying that people need certain minimum expectations. You can have those without having to make people’s lives miserable. I’m currently in the situation he’s describing where I have people who are taking advantage of my kindness. Completely honest here, I have been nothing but kind; I have been in there working harder than any of them. I hoped that “leading by example” would inspire them to step up and work with me, and yet all the time there’s a few on my team of people who are more than happy to stand by and watch while I do the backbreaking labor. Turns out *just* kindness and empathy just makes me a chump to be taken advantage of. I don’t dislike my team, but it’s been incredibly frustrating and disheartening, because no matter how kind or empathetic I’ve been, they work half as hard on the days I’m in charge than on the days when the other supervisor (who is same position for the same team as me) is in charge. The weird thing is that, despite getting half as much done for me as for the other supervisor, one of the team members actually complained to me that I’m overworking them.
      I’ve been lenient and overlooking things, and giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I’ve got to try something different, because I can’t handle the stress as it is. However, in case you’re concerned about my team and what I plan to change, don’t be concerned I’m gonna go crazy and make their lives miserable. I don’t yell; I have never raised my voice in a work environment, no matter how upset. All I’m saying is that as far as what I plan to do is have stricter expectations of what’s acceptable, and the failure to meet what is expected of our team will fall on those not properly pitching in (resulting in write ups, etc.).

    lol! I wish! We walk on eggshells nowadays. you’re stating the obvious but we can’t operate like this in 2024. I see understaffing, high turnover and a lawsuit for hostile work environment and wrongful termination in Your future 🔮 😂

      ​​​​​​@@K-park81By being a leader and through teamwork, being kind, have a little bit of humor, appreciating their work when it is done right & never get angry when they make mistakes but let them know about it and tell them to take corrective actions, tell them how they can improve the work, promote & reward upskilling, never keep your employees in one role😅 no matter how skilled and experienced they are ( at some point they would get bored), allow employees to do a role that they like ( it increases productivity ), give equal weightage to worklife balance ( repetitive long working hours is linked to early death due to high blood pressure and marital problems thus dragging down productivity ) etc. 😊

    This video is embarassingly shortsighted. It is based on management principles that have been proven wrong times and again. We all have personal issues during our worklife, and the lack of empathy and support shown towards an employees says to all other employees that they can not have problems. This is the root of distrust in society and in the groups of people we all rely on, which include your employer. This distrust and alienation is the root of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, which generate tens of billions of lost production each year. Please do not listen to this gentleman, it is a fraud.
