How do I remove the head if the the fan wheel is missing and the head is attached directly to the body, I have a new fan wheel but now the head is stuck, it still turns right but I just can’t remove it?
Hello and thank you for reaching out. The defletor is held on by two torx head screws. You must remove the deflector to gain access to the motor shaft. Once you have access to the shaft you can use a skinny pair of long nosed vice grips (or pliers) to firmly grab the shaft so you can spin head off. Give our customer care team a call if you need any further help or instructions. 800-467-8445
Im having the same problem. I took the deflector head off. You still cannot see the Driveshaft at all. There is nothing to Grab onto to remove the Head.
Just Bought the Stihl FSA 57and put it together ok. I wanted to put a Polycut head 2-2 on the unit rather than having the lineHead. Have watched lots of you tube videoes but none show the correct unit as some say leave the orange part on and just fit the polycut unit onto this, but it doesnt fit. Tried to put it on without but there is nothing to hold the head onto the unit. How does the head stay on without any bolts etc so I am not sure it is safe to use with the head just slotting on.
Hello Cheryl, there are 2 options for the FSA 57 mowing heads. Based on the serial number we can verify the correct head for your unit. Could you respond in a private message with your 9 digit serial number? Or another option is to contact our Customer Care team Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 7:00PM ET at 1-800-467-8445. You may also reach our Customer Care team at stihlcs@stihl.us. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.
For a new buy who also gets the polycut 3-2 head the documentation is terrible. I made a simple mistake and got the head on without the shroud and of course it's stuck now. This could be designed better.
Update... So the mistake I made was that I only looked at the instructions for the head replacement and they don't tell you some important details and the main manual has a single line, buried pages in about changing the head. So if you manage to get through all the silly warnings like not trying to use it under water or put your face next to the cutting head and all the other silly warnings manufacturers have to document now... You will find that the orange ring has to stay on. So I was unsure and I managed to put the new cuthead on upside down and without this ring. Sigh. So I took it back to the dealer and the technician was able to get it off in about two minutes. So anyway the moral of the story is double check both manuals before changing the cutting head. I used this trimmer all day today of some very tall grass and weeds and it did way better that I expected. I have the AK 20 battery and I was worried it would not be enough but I found that I got tired way before the battery did. Overall it's a great trimmer. The documentation could be better and less cluttered with silly stuff but that seems to be the norm these days.
Absolutely worst design ever!! I hate mine. You barely tap the head and it spins out new line. Been through six replacement heads in about three months. And I can’t find poly cut blades that fit it. 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
Sadly there is NOTHING on how to remove the old style spool housing for the FSA57. Purchased in 2020 and already the spool housing is a special order IF it is available and there is NOTHING anywhere about the installation or removal of that housing. It's held in with a snap ring (VERY HARD TO REMOVE WITHOUT THE SPECIAL TOOLS FOR SNAP RINGS) Looks like this is one weed eater destined for the trash heap if I don't get some help from Stihl soon.
Hello Scott. The head that you are referring to is the AutoCut 2-2. You need to remove the spool and turn the machine over and look inside the spool housing. You will need to remove the external circlip. After the clip is removed use a flat screwdriver between the motor housing and spool housing with a upward motion (spool housing away from the motor housing) to snap the base off the cross bar on electric motor.
Well that was a lot of help.... Anybody can put the guard on.......
Can I also use the battery AK20 and AK30?
Absolutely

@@stihlusa Thank You for your reply. I have already bought the correct 3-2 head for the FSA 57, so now have the line head and the polycut head.
This will only work if your FHA 57's serial number starts with a 5. If it starts with a 9, you'll need to use a different spool.
