Your hair is so cute Shelbey!
thank you!
Love your videos sis! My Feb TBR: The Reformatory, Reel, The Rage of Dragons, Before I Let Go, The Personal Librarian, Go Tell It On The Mountain & All The Sinners Bleed...It's going to be a great reading month! 😆
Girl, this is going to be a great month! These are all bangers!
@shelbeyandthebookclub Yes, it is! I'm so excited to dive into all of them! 🥰
I will try some historical fiction for black history month. Finally 😂
Mary Monroe’s “Mrs. Wiggins” is a great historical fiction for a beginner.
@calebmcgowan2493 Thank you 😊. I have that book. I will start that book today.
Go Tell It On The Mountain is on my TBR this month too! Last year when I started trying to read more Black lit, I found that James Baldwin is my favorite! Both his fiction and non-fiction should be required reading for everyone (especially those of us who are melanin-deficient)
My first James Baldwin was Another Country. He just has a way with words!
Heeeey! I'm planning on reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Dont Cry for Me by Daniel Black and finishing up The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae 🫶🏽
You have a great list!
Morgan Jerkins also wrote this book Wandering in Strange Lands. I read this a couple of years ago and I intend on reading it again in February along with some of the ones you mentioned.
Yes that was the one I couldn’t remember lol
Hey Friend!!! I’ve never heard of Leslie Penelope. But I just jotted her name down to my library list. Thank you ❤
I think you’ll love her work
I don’t have specific books that I pick out for a TBR but since I’m trying to diversify my reading genres more, I plan to read at least 2 romances by black authors for Feb and everything else I read (except 1 buddy read 🙄😅) will be by black authors as well. I focus on black authors all year round so it won’t be hard to meet this goal lol. I just wish I made books by black authors a theme for this buddy read but I wasn’t thinking.
lol the buddy reads be coming at you fast so I totally understand. I stay telling somebody i’ll read with them 😂
@shelbeyandthebookclub 😂😂
Walter Mosley is my fave.
He is one of my favs too
I just finished reading The Trees. WOW! What a great book. I WILL be reading more Everett.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Hi I love L Penelope books, her Earthsinger Chronicles is amazing, actually reached out and told her so. So real heavy hitters on your list, I am still in my black joy and black love phase❤
Yay! I love to hear it.
I definitely have to read and pick up Neighbors the cover is gorgeous and I need to read the James Baldwin book as well. Thank you for the amazing book recs ❤
Thank you for watching. And yes I can’t wait to read Neighbors
@@shelbeyandthebookclub Absolutely!
I have 4 books on my TBR: The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, Year of Yes, Trail of Lightening, The World We Make. I'm currently reading and will probably finish in February: Sula
This is a great list friend!
Just Finished The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store or what a ride!
I want to read mostly romances next month book by black authors. I have so many on my TBR so I’m just going to let my mood reading guide me lol. I’m starting Neighbors and Other Stories on audio tomorrow.
You can never go wrong with romance
I love your recommendations ! I just trust your judgement 😭
Thank you boo! This makes me happy
James Baldwin, of course 😊I may join in on your book club reads for February
Hey, Shelbey! My February TBR includes Yaa Gyasi’s “Homegoing” and “Transcendent Kingdom,” Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” and Danielle Allen’s “Curvy Girl Summer,” for now. As far as my favorite Black author, I am still discovering that. If I had to choose, bell hooks would definitely be in the top three. I was introduced to her in undergrad, with the first readings of the semester being “Killing Rage: Ending Racism.” It was in that course, through this book, that I finally heard my voice. I learned to “speak up and speak out!” Shout out to my professor. Thanks for the Black History Month recs 💜
That is a great TBR! I hope you enjoy!
13:47 I want to read Ours too! You’ve sold me on bumping it up on my list. Loved Sky Full of Elephants!
I’m really excited to read it, the paperback comes out in February too
Just found your channel and appreciate the recommendations. I just finished The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi - so much in such a short space. Looking to read more of his work. Will be reading Do What Godmother Says, The Pulse of Perseverence, and A Lethal Lady.
I’ve heard great things about The Lies of the Ajungo
and welcome!
I plan to read Harlem Renaissance authors and Harlem Rhapsody all February.
Harlem Rhapsody is April’s book club pick 👀
Yay!!! I’ll be excited to have some discussion about it. I anticipate wanting to reread it already lol
Your January and my January are way different. I feel like we should be in June right now as long as this month as been. I don't have a favorite author yet but still finding my way. On my TBR for February are: Go Tell it on the Mountain, A Justified Love affair, The Reformatory, Intrigued by Danger, The Secret World of Maggie Grey and I think I'm going to switch gears with The Healing. There will be others. Yall stay adding to my list.
Great list!
Neighbors was really good! I really enjoyed that a lot.
I’m excited to read it!
TBR: The Message, We Were Eight Years in Power, The Mayor of Maxwell Street, Rafe, Sky Full of Elephants, The Trees, The Sweetness of Water, Black Cake and James. I added Caul Baby because it sounds interesting. I might add Ours as well. Lovely One is actually on my March TBR.
Let me know how you like The Mayor of Maxwell Street
@@shelbeyandthebookclub I absolutely loved The Mayor of Maxwell Street but Nelly drove me crazy with her recklessness.
@ okay I’m glad it was good
I have soo many books I need to tackle this year as I get into reading. Hopefully for his month, I can read Bell Hooks “All About Love”. Purchase “A Soul to Keep” and reread so I can read “Second Blood”. Maybe even squeeze in squeeze in LA Banks third book in the Vampire Huntress Series. 😔 so many books so little time.
I need to read the Vampire Huntress Series. So many books!
@ It is hard finding the hard copies. I’ve been able to find the first four of the books in the series. I have to order the rest online.
The song at the beginning 😂! Right now, my fav author is Toni Morrison.
I'm reading my 1st Toni Morrison right now (Sula) and i cant wait to read more from her
Toni is that girl! I love her so bad
I’ll be reading Go Tell it on the Mountain with the book club along with The Bluest Eye and The Vanishing Half. I might throw a comedic novella in there to breakup the emotions of the other books.
Also if ya’ll ever listened to Brandy back in the day you should definitely know who Darkchild, the super producer is!
I still need to read The Vanishing Half. Let me know how it is!
Was crazy is I read the book club book every month but I do not engage on the Discord… And I have read last summer on Statesville Street and it was pretty good.
Yes come chat with us!
That’s a fun fact. I hadn’t heard that they were related!
I picked up “yonder “from my local library yesterday.😊😊
I hope you enjoy it
Love To See It, Love To Hear It And Love To Red IT!!!!!!!!!
Thank you 💜
I’m going to try some sci Fi or some black fantasy this month. Not something I ever read so I’m going to look through your posts because I don’t have anywhere idea where to start. Is there such a thing as Sci Fi Cochise books? 🤷🏽♀️
There is but I don’t have any recs other than Real Girls Get Down by TM Richardson
As far as fantasy The Children of Blood and Bone or Blood At The Root are both greaf
Hard to pick a favorite.. I noticed there weren’t any poetry books on your list so I’ll go with Lucille Clifton (:
I need to grow up and read some poetry
@@shelbeyandthebookclub HA 😂💜
