I'm still building my smart home. I have HomePod mini's in every room, lutron smart switches and motion sensors. Now I'm adding Eve Energy for floor lamps, Night stand lamps and the TVs.
100% agree. I’ve seen far too many “Thread full mesh everywhere” comments. It’s a very well designed protocol with elegance in it simplicity. Good hierarchical design etc…. I just believe we’re all better off with realistic expectations. :). And you e totally earned it! I look forward to your videos every week! Inspired to be better with every video you release!
Woah. Thread makes way more sense now. I didn’t realize I was actually confused about routers vs. border routerss. Thanks for clearing that up and ufor the link!
Happy to help Dustin! The fact that the two roles are described the same way doesn’t help :) the word router actually refers to the ability to forward Layer3 packets through a network though so… it is accurate. 🤷♂️
Thanks Chuck! Really appreciate the feedback! Highly recommend one at a time! Remember that other powered Thread devices like the Nanoleaf LED strip and Light bulb will also act as Thread routers and improve your Thread network.
Yup. That's correct. From a Thread Router perspective, the on/off of the socket in the Eve Energy doesn't really come into play. If the plug is turned off in the home app, the Thread router will still be able to pass traffic. Obviously if there's no power at all to the plug it's not going to do anything. I know you get that but the internet does have "those" people. :)
Thanks Michael! I really appreciate that! I've been trying to release a Thread video since November but haven't been able to get something together that I was even close to happy with. Hoping that the approach of embedding the Thread content in the product review makes it easier to understand!
I have a dumb light with a button on it. I would like the light’s button to trigger an automation/shortcut. I’m thinking I could plug this dumb light into the eve energy plug to achieve this? Do you think this will work?
Not really enough information on what you're trying to accomplish, but it's possible. You can setup automations based on the energy draw on the Eve Energy smartplug, so if you turning the button on causes enough energy to flow through the plug to trigger the automation, this could definitely work. Let us know how it goes!
Hi Chris, many thanks for your videos, they are great and very useful. I would appreciate very much if you could comment and/or give me some advise about my homekit network. My devices are Philips Hue (lights and sensors); Eve (energy and home); Eufy (1 indoor cam Pan&Tilt + 3 indoor cam's); Omna (1 indoor cam); Vocolinc (1 PureFlow + 1 FlowerBud); As Homekit Hub I have an iPad Pro 2020 and 3 HomePods (1 HomePod +2 HomePods Mini). Only the 2 HomePods Mini are THREAD COMPATIBLE and I want to start now a new Thread Network. I will start with 2 Eve Energy + 1 Eve Aqua + 1 Eve Weather. My question is: Using the HomePod Mini as a Hub, will all devices I have (Thread and non Thread) work with the HomeKit App being the only difference that the Tread devices will have a faster response to the commands given, or it will not work at all. Kind regards José Moreira (from Portugal)
Oi José! Espero tudo otimó contigo! You've got it 100% right. All your devices will work together, regardless of whether they are Wifi, Wired, BLE, or Thread. That's the beauty of Homekit. Sounds like you have a pretty great setup! It's always fun in the early stages of watching it grow and making your life a little bit easier with every device that gets added!
Hey Chris, Thanks for the best Eve Energy Thread explaining on the internet! But is 32 parent thread routers enough? I'm waiting for thread enabled downlight / GU10 bulbs, and I have around 30 of that, add 10 regular nanotech bulbs, and not to talk about Eve Energy and Eve Light Switchs. Thats 45-50 parent devices. I'm still in idea mode, to how to get most of out of it. Would going with regular downlight / GU10 bulbs and Eve Light Switchs, be a beter idea? But Will it be enough coverage?
32 parent routers with a theoretical max of 511 children would put the 16K devices in your network. Thread can operate large networks in multiple city blocks. Highly unlikely you will have any issues in a home. The larger problem right now is that there aren’t that many Thread devices available. Nanoleaf is still the only light bulb with thread and they don’t make any GU10s so you’ll have to decide to wait or to invest in something non-thread like the IKEA or Hue GU10s. Bottom line is that it’s very unlikely that coverage will be an issue in any “normal” sized home.
@@Homekitgeek Thanks for replying. What if I use regular LED GU10 and combine it with Eve Light Switch. Will it work? So instead of controlling the GU10, I would be controlling and automating the Eve Light Switchs.
I’ve got a similar setup using the Lutron dimmer switches. It could work. But I’d be wondering whether you can drive 10GUs of a single dimmer switch. I’m not an electrician so don’t have an answer for that last question

Great explanation of Thread. I think many get confused over the full/sleepy thread thing. Thanks as well for the shout out - super appreciate it!

Great video Chris - thank you for shedding light on iOT networking and connectivity 👏👏
Feedback is much appreciated! Really glad that this is useful! Thread is kinda awesome, but we’re all still learning lots about it!
Awesome review Chris! After watching this, I want to replace all of my smart plugs… 😀

Ok...that is scarey weird...I literally received the eve energy plug 1 hour ago...hooked it up and so far so good....thanks for the video 👍🏻
LOL 😂 Sometimes the universe just works out! Hope it works out for you as well as it did for me!
Love Thread on my Nanoleaf bulbs and strips. Now I just need to figure out where to use some smart plugs.
LOL yeah I really didn’t have a solid use-case for the plugs, but I will find one! Having the extra Thread info was enough for me! :)
So does it matter whether the plugs is off or on in HomeKit in regards to its performance as a thread router?
