This is the power undyne was speaking of when she says he's actually incredibly strong. Papyrus could be the strongest monster in the underground. He doesn't use his strength though, hes been trained to cook spaghetti. The people around him realize that his gentle and pure soul is worth more to this world than the raw strength that he could use. I think that's beautiful. They cultivated a beautiful soul from a warmachine. That's what makes this au so tragic to me. Forcing papyrus to use that strength when he was never intended to use it. Those who tended his "spiritual garden" are all gone now. Now papyrus is scared, alone, and thrusted into a position he never was supposed to end up in. Poor guy.

Undyne said he was tough but wouldn't send him to fight because he'd be torn into "smiling shreds." It's funny, if he is actually very strong then Undertale never explores his strength because he's simply too naive and kind spirited to hurt anyone. He never even kills you, just gets you weak then puts you in a shed that you can casually walk out of. That's why I like this AU, it explores what would happen if you were able to push Papyrus to his edge, to the point where he *would* fight, but even then he still gives up because he's simply too kind. Like Asriel says after you beat True Pacifist, "Be careful in the outside world, OK? Despite what everyone thinks, it's not as nice as it is here. There are lot of Floweys out there. And not everything can be resolved by just being nice." In this case, Papyrus can't resolve this issue by being nice. All of his friends are dead because of you and being nice won't help here, it will only get him ran over by you. It's sad, he is shoved into a situation he wasn't prepared for and now he has to use the strength he never uses to fight you, only to be unsuccessful.

Y'know, Disbelief might be the only Undertale fan creation that I actually respect as a work of fanfiction, because it really does honor the character in question. Most of the "AU" garbage that comes out of the Undertale community makes no sense and seems like some cringe you'd find on an 8 year old's Deviantart... but not this. This really does show the same Papyrus we all know and love. It takes no liberties except for switching the positions of Sand and Papyrus, making such a small change to the story of the game and saying "this time Sans decided to step in sooner," no other wild nonsensical cringey changes to the world around them. And more important than that, Papyrus isn't turned into some edgy bloodthirsty war machine: he tries to be, because Frisk has killed all his friends, but he just can't do it. Disbelief really beautifully paints a picture of the Papyrus that other characters like Undyne allude to. He's "incredibly strong," but entirely capable of harboring malice or inflicting pain on others, and this whole sequence just captures that beautifully. It shows he IS both stronger and more motivated than Sans, but he simply lacks the raw brutality that Sans can show, and no matter how much he tries, he just can't seem to find the will to want to hurt someone. Even in the fight itself there are a lot of undodgeable attacks, some of which you're forced to endure, but many of them are stopped by Papyrus himself: he could easily kill Frisk but he can't bring himself to pull the trigger. It really gives the feeling of Frisk having to abuse their reset ability to beat him: they can't actually win a fight vs. him, and the entire battle is all about psychologically wearing him down until he just... gives up because he doesn't want to hurt anyone. It's all about resetting until they can stall him out long enough to make him quit, because the only person who can actually BEAT Papyrus... is Papyrus.
I cannot explain how much Nostalgia this brings me, quarantine was amazing. It wasn’t the time that I found out about Undertale but the time I had so much time to myself and I got into Undertale and it’s AUs heavily and Essentially having a whole Undertale phase (which I enjoyed don’t get me wrong). There was nothing like getting off from Online school and then playing some Roblox Undertale games, that was the life, specifically Undertale Last Corridor, Test Place, and Undertale Judgement Day. The whole reason I started getting into AU stuff was legit because I found Undertale Last Corridor in like mid 2020, then slowly it slowly started getting me hooked to rhe product, and going beyond just Roblox Undertale games, There were some other games too, but I forgot about those. But those were the way to go. Also AU Content like Glitchtale was a banger back then, I was always rooting for Betty lmao I remember when I finally got my hands on Undertale in Xbox Game Pass back in mid 2021 and ran a True pacifist route, I legit shed some tears because that is some strong stuff, the ost, the characters, the fact that you could have killed everyone but you didn’t, and the credits. Even though I knew how everything played out, I felt like I was in the moment, for the Omega Flowey fight, I struggled alot with Asgore and The Asriel fight and his ost. Phenomenal game, thank you Toby. Disbelief was one of the first ever “AUs” (Actually an AT) i was introduced to, I found out about it I think from a mashup reaction video and from there I found more content about it and is one of the reasons I got hooked myself to the concept of AUs and stuff. The music, everything about this AT is so fire, my personal favorite is this, Backbone because of its insane upbeat and how you can tell there’s alot going on within the song. From Papyrus breathing heavy to Undyne being summoned to the game of Ping Pong. All around phenomenal ost. Definitely up there as one of the AUs/ATs with amazing music. This was also one of my gotos to watch Gacha undertale reacts to disbelief papyrus, etc etc. I miss those times, from going to the Supermarket with my Dad and Grandma then coming home to play some ULC in 2020 or UJD in 2021, listening to and discovering Undertale and AU themes, roleplaying in discord Undertale servers, (yes, something I also used to do) watching Undertale Gacha content (yes im guilty of this, that shit used to hit, especially the reaction to animations like that Christmas party AU thing and AU fights like Last Breath, Disbelief Papyrus and Glitchtale), Staying up extremely late on my phone watching said content, I had to always charge my phone fully beforehand because I had a LG Stylo Plus 4 that was passed down to me back in 2019, and the battery life was completely ass so you had to make the most of it and wouldn’t charge unless you had it in a specific place. All around, amazing year, amazing time to be alive. 2020-2021, never forget. So much time has passed, so quickly too, 2021 was just yesterday and now it’s 3 years ago, time files man.

Y'know, Disbelief might be the only Undertale fan creation that I actually respect as a work of fanfiction, because it really does honor the character in question. Most of the "AU" garbage that comes out of the Undertale community makes no sense and seems like some cringe you'd find on an 8 year old's Deviantart... but not this. This really does show the same Papyrus we all know and love. It takes no liberties except for switching the positions of Sand and Papyrus, making such a small change to the story of the game and saying "this time Sans decided to step in sooner," no other wild nonsensical cringey changes to the world around them. And more important than that, Papyrus isn't turned into some edgy bloodthirsty war machine: he tries to be, because Frisk has killed all his friends, but he just can't do it.
Disbelief really beautifully paints a picture of the Papyrus that other characters like Undyne allude to. He's "incredibly strong," but entirely capable of harboring malice or inflicting pain on others, and this whole sequence just captures that beautifully. It shows he IS both stronger and more motivated than Sans, but he simply lacks the raw brutality that Sans can show, and no matter how much he tries, he just can't seem to find the will to want to hurt someone. Even in the fight itself there are a lot of undodgeable attacks, some of which you're forced to endure, but many of them are stopped by Papyrus himself: he could easily kill Frisk but he can't bring himself to pull the trigger. It really gives the feeling of Frisk having to abuse their reset ability to beat him: they can't actually win a fight vs. him, and the entire battle is all about psychologically wearing him down until he just... gives up because he doesn't want to hurt anyone. It's all about resetting until they can stall him out long enough to make him quit, because the only person who can actually BEAT Papyrus... is Papyrus.

I cannot explain how much Nostalgia this brings me, quarantine was amazing. It wasn’t the time that I found out about Undertale but the time I had so much time to myself and I got into Undertale and it’s AUs heavily and Essentially having a whole Undertale phase (which I enjoyed don’t get me wrong). There was nothing like getting off from Online school and then playing some Roblox Undertale games, that was the life, specifically Undertale Last Corridor, Test Place, and Undertale Judgement Day. The whole reason I started getting into AU stuff was legit because I found Undertale Last Corridor in like mid 2020, then slowly it slowly started getting me hooked to rhe product, and going beyond just Roblox Undertale games, There were some other games too, but I forgot about those. But those were the way to go. Also AU Content like Glitchtale was a banger back then, I was always rooting for Betty lmao
I remember when I finally got my hands on Undertale in Xbox Game Pass back in mid 2021 and ran a True pacifist route, I legit shed some tears because that is some strong stuff, the ost, the characters, the fact that you could have killed everyone but you didn’t, and the credits. Even though I knew how everything played out, I felt like I was in the moment, for the Omega Flowey fight, I struggled alot with Asgore and The Asriel fight and his ost. Phenomenal game, thank you Toby.
Disbelief was one of the first ever “AUs” (Actually an AT) i was introduced to, I found out about it I think from a mashup reaction video and from there I found more content about it and is one of the reasons I got hooked myself to the concept of AUs and stuff. The music, everything about this AT is so fire, my personal favorite is this, Backbone because of its insane upbeat and how you can tell there’s alot going on within the song. From Papyrus breathing heavy to Undyne being summoned to the game of Ping Pong. All around phenomenal ost. Definitely up there as one of the AUs/ATs with amazing music.
This was also one of my gotos to watch Gacha undertale reacts to disbelief papyrus, etc etc.
I miss those times, from going to the Supermarket with my Dad and Grandma then coming home to play some ULC in 2020 or UJD in 2021, listening to and discovering Undertale and AU themes, roleplaying in discord Undertale servers, (yes, something I also used to do) watching Undertale Gacha content (yes im guilty of this, that shit used to hit, especially the reaction to animations like that Christmas party AU thing and AU fights like Last Breath, Disbelief Papyrus and Glitchtale), Staying up extremely late on my phone watching said content, I had to always charge my phone fully beforehand because I had a LG Stylo Plus 4 that was passed down to me back in 2019, and the battery life was completely ass so you had to make the most of it and wouldn’t charge unless you had it in a specific place.
All around, amazing year, amazing time to be alive. 2020-2021, never forget. So much time has passed, so quickly too, 2021 was just yesterday and now it’s 3 years ago, time files man.
