- We tested the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door to its limit both off and on-road. This one gets the rather old K15B petrol engine with the old 4-speed automatic gearbox and the usual 5-speed manual gearbox. Why has Maruti Suzuki opted for an powertrain and if it will help it do better in terms of performance, we tell you in our first drive video.

Please use chest mount rather than head mount for POV shots. Head mount is more shaky and feels weird as its not on eye level and very high

This much is clear after most reviews - the Jimny is as invincible off-road as it’s off-shore version, better riding than the 3-door, probably helped by a longer wheelbase and an overall approachable option as a small-family (read nuclear) car for most things, or a potent second vehicle for Ladakh jaunts or similar. The ‘under power’ from the 1.5 na and 5 speed manual doesn’t bother me as much as the prospect of MUL choosing premium over mass. This, in my view, is just NOT justifiable.
I mean c’mon - what about this car says premium? Engine - old, frame - oldish now, aggregates - parts bin economies of scale, transmission - old and underwhelming even if solid, materials - mass and not premium. The rear seats don’t even get pressure sensors that prevent the seatbelt alarms from screaming when they’re unbuckled with no one home! So, what exactly let’s Maruti imagine they can get away with a 15 lac+ pricing (if they are, as rumoured), especially with the Thar bookending the range on both ends? I’d pick the Jimny any day of the year over the Thar (and I already have one booked) for it’s real world practicality. But no one’s going to masquerade it as something more than a utilitarian and fun little 4x4, approaching midlife and with maybe not more than 10 years to go before it’s shelved for irrelevance against the march of technology.
I am not getting why you guys are saying if Jimny can stand where Gypsy is? Gypsy was 2 Gen Jimny just named differently.

The wheels on true offroaders are best at 15 or 16, so that you can fit larger tyres on them for better side walls and adequate cushioning. Wheels 18 and abouve are not meant for off road tyres.
Thanks for converting all the pros and cons of it....u don't make any hype of its 5-door which I like most....other Auto related channels makes too much hype of its 5-door ....and result reflect in jimney's pricing which is totally unfair
Agreed 5 door Jimny is more practical and more suited for the mindset of our people. But the real charm is the 3 door variant which many enthusiasts are waiting for which has got all the capabilities. Hope Maruthi Suzuki launches it in India at the earliest atleast in a 1 : 10 ratio for 3 door and 5 door respectively.

I have a family of three and drive a Honda WRV diesel currently. My options:
1. Keep the WRV and go for a Jimny base variant as a lifestyle vehicle.
2. Sell the WRV and go for a Grand Vitara Allgrip.
Main purpose is going through Mumbai potholes without having to slow down. Secondary purpose is one trip a year to a snow clad place.
What do you suggest?
I would guess grand vitara would be better option for long drives especially if u have family. And for city potholes also vitara would be sensible option. Offroader like jimny is useful when you live or often go to Village area or out of city where roads are very bad or for kachcha roads.

I would like to upgrade to 215/75/R15 AT from the stock tires. Would this cause any difference in the overall performance of the vehicle.
Also I wanted to know that this being a new vehicle, would the wheel alignment post tire replacement be a difficult job ?
I just don’t want to have any unnecessary problems on a new vehicle. Any help or suggestion is appreciated.

NANO ke size ki hai, Indian versions ka wheelbase BUS jaisa hai - European model ka short wheelbase hi uski best advantage hai narrow hilly off road trail par ( 24 deg break over angle in India vs 28deg of europe), Safety Rating 2-3 ⭐ ( Indian model ka wheel base aur weight badhane se Rating aur Kharaab hi ho jayegi), aur Price Scorpio Diesel and Xuv700 jitni, heavy GearBox 1.5 Petrol hai to miliage bhi City mein 7-9 bas!
Diesel Engine hota to bhi man lete is price tag ko . Ya ye engine 1.2 turbo Petrol hota to har saal insurance kr hi paise bachte.
Road ke sare , negligible undulations bhi feel hote hain kyuki front beam axle hai(phir bhi ride Thar se bohot better hai), vaise uska articulation best hota hai ( civil engineer can check quality of road , just by driving a Jimny over it...)
