Since Ikot-ikot era, Sarah G has raised the standards of OPM music videos to higher standards! This video and song is so artistic, I heard from an interview of the writer of this song, Sarah was actually a part of the songwriting but she chose not to include her name in it. Honestly ever since I was little Sarah Geronimo has always been the artist I looked up to. She can sing, act, dance and many more. I noticed the evolution of her slow love songs to a more modern upbeat songs but still the same style as always, which makes me love her more honestly. Iba eh, from the beat of the song, sa lalim ng lyrics, sa concept ng video, sa artistry ng effects you'll say talaga na mesteryo. Wag nyomg sabihin na wala tong storyline, remember sarah is a great artist and also the director of this mv, pinagisipan to nila ng mabuti, so my hidden meaning talaga tong mv nato na napaka mesteryoso, wag nyo muna kasi unahan ng expectations nyo, try to understand first. Sarah will be the one to keep OPM relevant. Let's be honest. Music in the Philippines was at its peak in the early 2000's with great songs and deep meaning. [REVIEW] Sarah Geronimo releases the latest music video for her new song ‘Misteryo’ off her acclaimed 2015 album ‘The Great Unknown”. Penned by OPM’s new generation pop hit making duo Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana, the song tackles the delicate and oft-times dangerous moments of confusion at a love so uncertain, it questions its chance at a future. Laden in ethereal production of electronic sounds and vocal manipulated backgrounds with a heavy bass line for a hook as it crescendos into a gratifying grandeur of a typical modern day club banger, Sarah Geronimo’s unmistakable storytelling was brought into new dimensions as she sings themes of romantic passion, desolation, incertitude, and yearning heightened by Alfaro and Lacsamana’s signature use of bygone deep Filipino words as it enhances and transports into a seemingly enchanted territory both unorthodox yet very familiar. Geronimo’s vocals were full and thick challenged with a wide range of needed emotional gravitas to send the spirit of the song across yet just enough so that it does not alienate listeners to be fully immersed within. Grinding her mids and low notes through her chest voice predominantly before breaking into a hearty piercing head tone at the song’s climax playing coloratura with affectations fit for an operatic soprano and later finishing it off with softer tones that fade into much like a whisper proving what a vocal master she is.
The music video was directed by Nolan Bernardino, a favorite collaborator of Geronimo (Minamahal, The Great Unknown, Kaibigan Mo), with a penchant for glamorous lighting and favoring intently beguiling lingering shots over highly saturated sharp scenes, one comes to expect the same treatment as with their previous collaborations- simple, sincere, emotional, and doting. Yet, as with the case of Geronimo’s latest outings, it’s better to be devoid of any antecedent notions as she has proven to be more daring and adventurous with her artistry as of late and that being surprised is better than expecting- and it definitely worked this time.
At first view, the music video seems to be your run of the mill pop offering - quite a ‘simple’ production with at most only three basic set changes, in-studio light play, and a ‘narrative-less’ sung through affair - Yet, when broken down, it affronts the viewer with something very deep and emotive- an indication of how much sincerity and thought the team has put into making this project. In its simplicity lies the very complex and poignant depiction of the song’s essence, an ingenious ride of Geronimo and her team’s inherent understanding of the song and their artistic ability to translate its very core without falling into the predictable and the superficial.
The music video takes into a different artform when viewed stylistically and perceptively. It becomes very cerebral and downright impassioned as it deconstructs the emotions of the song and made it its cornerstone of a theme. It seems as though the viewer is being put into the headspace of a person so torn, practically, borderline manic - full of distraught and anguish highlighted through jarring anaglyph effects, esoteric lighting, abrupt fades, claustrophobic set, fiery cut chase sequences, trippy graphics, and hyper imposed layouts. It takes the viewer within the emotional turmoils of the song as if it is being a part of it- that it in itself is a journey so dismantling and discomforting it is almost frantic; yet so real and representative of how it really feels to be so demented, especially when it comes to the passion of love.
The video starts with a titlecard against a moody silhouette of Geronimo bathed in a single light at the center and officially starts with various shots of her hued in different colors signaling a more introspective jaunt- this is loosely reminiscent of hip hop’s radical artists such as Kid Cudi or Kendrick Lamar but whereas theirs are the ecstatic kinds, Geronimo’s led to more of an entrance into a feeling much like how the Queen’s famed Bohemian Rhapsody art cover is. Then the scene cuts into a bewildered Geronimo lying aback barefoot in a constricted concrete labyrinth simulating a feeling that the viewer is inside Geronimo’s mind. It feels more like an asylum than a hallway and slightly touching on the fragile discussion on mental health- a cursor on the context of paranoia, anxiety, obsession and at extreme, multiple personalities. The lighting was significantly darker and moodier- a departure from the usually pop and bubbly fanfare Geronimo is known for. This marks how the video is thematically different than what was the norm for Geronimo but all the while still part of her persona - an alternate view to this side of the popstar: mature, somber, and angsty. Slow moving shots with barely light shining on Geronimo’s face along with the rigid blur effects and inserts of her silhouette rendered meant to detach the viewer from reality and be absorbed into this space. However, the video can benefit with a notch tweak on the contrasts and black points as it sometimes hard to decipher images shown- a tad lighter on the shadows won’t hurt. Then the first chorus swings in and Geronimo is shown with a variably better lighting- encompassing much of her emotional state at this point in the video.
An image of a seemingly extra terrestrial Geronimo is then served at the opening of the second stanza. Drenched in glitters and treated with extra blurs make this image otherworldly. Costumed in various silver layers practically envisioned Geronimo as an enchantress of purity, decency, and piety until the ingress of the second chorus wherein the viewer is transported to another side of Geronimo- feisty, fierce, and intense. Backed by a plethora of flooding lights and dressed in shades of sage, slate, and black with a sexier demeanor and a more intimidating hairstyle, Geronimo is seen passionately moving around and aggressively declaring her presence. This may have a nod to the duality of the human nature: the good and the bad. Where one is collected, reserved, and appropriate, the other seems to be dauntless, assertive, and dangerous. In its context, the song is debating on a fate unsure, as with reality, humans are constantly faced with the worries of morality: the right and the wrong. The call of society versus the whispers of the heart. Oftentimes, this leads to a heavy thinking of whether or not to pursue an endeavor or a love found. This great unknown is recurrently the fear in which humans are forced to decide to step forward or to step back. A constant battlefield in the mind.
The video, with it’s psychedelic use of imagery and graphics coupled with heavy use of fast fade ins and outs with hard cuts juxtaposing attentively shot different stages and personas of Geronimo makes it an effective display of the emotional journey of the mind. Its calibre is comparable to that of some of the influential trailblazers in Asian and International music scene. Geronimo’s reinvention is telling that the new age of OPM is here and it’s about time Filipino pop music takes the global centerstage. As the viewer sees Geronimo on her knees, desperate, before the video lashes out to a more energetic and overwrought hodgepodge of flashy imagery, one must have felt her earnest candor on the message of the song and what it means to her and her listeners. As it transports the viewer into this mental state of despair, the only certain about the whole event is the newfound bravery of Geronimo in tackling greater heights in her career by relating to the most common and mundane of the human experience. As she continues to tread new paths and explore deeper her artistry, one can only help but wonder where is Sarah taking us next, and just like the final image of the video projects, a curled up Geronimo on the concrete floor, this is only the beginning of surely a more adventurous and bright ride with the popstar- that is not a mystery.
