  • The story of the restoration in the 1980's of the wall paintings in the tomb of Queen Nefertari, wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II. Excellent episode from BBC's 'Chronicle' series. Deemed lost, but here it is.

A fine example of a good classical tv documentary. Relaxed pace, informative, great imagery, clear voice. A true classic.

This documentary sums up why ancient history and curiosity has fueled my thirst for knowledge and all, also, why, Ramses The Great and Nefertari are my favorite King and Queen of all Egypt, their Eternal and Unshakable Truest and Deepest Love they shared since they were just kids, 'til Nefertari's untimely and tragic death at the young age of just 36 years old of illness, leaving Ramses to rule alone 'til he died at 90-91 years old, of natural causes and old age, but, mostly heartbreak & loneliness, possibly, remember, emotional pain hurts more than the physical pain, I mean they do say that sometimes right?

Ramses also banged at least three of his own daughters, and lots of married women and their daughters. A real love story.

He def didn’t die of heartbreak or loneliness since there was 60 years between her death and his. He also had many, many other wives. He just loved her the most. He didn’t rule alone either. Another wife would have taken her place as great royal consort.

I miss documentary masterpieces like this, with a slow pace, beautiful music and beautiful images. Every documentary now blasts you with loudness, fast editing and doesn't let you bask in the magic of what they're supposed to be introducing you to.

Nefertari was obviously held in high regard by Ramesses. We know very little about her though. Conservators have the patience of saints...respect.

She was a strong woman, birthed so many children and stood by her husband side. She also was known for being generous helped many people. It was foretold she was very ill she didn’t go inside her temple when completed she died shortly after. I adore this woman more then Nefertiti ❤️

in another documentary 'by Romer, he exposed modern state of egypt's disrespect for its heritage. sewer pipes placed under temples have destroyed these artworks. misogyny is NEVER a coincidence but planned & strategic

24:07 Nice key! I can just see the ancient Egyptian tomb keepers having a big ol’ key ring full of big gold keys!

It’s truly sad how long it took Egypt to appreciate their cultural heritage. From using the parts of the pyramids as building materials to chopping off the sphinxes nose. Even in the 60’s they flooded a valley that held antique temples & were offering them for free to other countries before the dam was complete. It’s now in NYC. No telling what else was lost bc destruction. I’m sure most was destroyed bc of religious reasons; viewing these monuments and artifacts as idols. I’m not blaming Islam since early Christianity certainly has a history of destroying cultural icons bc of forced conversions but Egypt didn’t realize what they have. Sad thing is certain sects have threatened the pyramids & other places of historical significance. Just look what happened in Iraq and Syria only this past decade. It’s no wonder countries who have significant ancient Egyptians artifacts won’t give them back. Nefertiti isn’t included since she’s too fragile to move.

yeah look at the bamiyan buddha statues in afghanistan too. All artifacts from muslim countries are safer in western museums.

It’s so awesome to see this and then internet search for images of Nefertiti tomb to see just how good a job these people did in their conservation efforts! As we move towards the future it to moves at us becoming this present, this moment where everything that has been touching all that shall be and time feel just as 3 dimensional as space. I LOVE HISTORY!

As I of the commenters said it has been reopened , cameras were not allowed in, had to rely on tourists who saw it , not very satisfactory?! Probably worried too many people being there the conservators didva good job, the tourists were not aware that had been compliment ???
